I found the TouchPad’s battery life was only 60% of that of the iPad 2. In my standard tablet battery test, where I set the screen brightness to 75%, keep the Wi-Fi connection active and play local videos back to back, the TouchPad lasted just 6 hours and 5 minutes, compared with 10 hours and 9 minutes for the iPad 2. H-P claims 9 hours of continuous video playback, but that’s with Wi-Fi turned off. In mixed use, battery life was decent.
You know testing the battery life is a good idea, but honestly my iPad 3G+Wifi (when 3G is disabled) you're lucky to get 5 hours of active use, I highly doubt this guys benchmark was at all accurate, rather, I'm guessing he read the 10hour battery life off the back of the iPad box pitted it against the TouchPad to draw his conclusion.
If we're talking technology FaceBook it will die the same way IRC died, something fresher and hotter will be on its way soon enough.
Home entertainment and Internet, webcam and VoIP. All you need is just the bottle of your favorite drink, sit down on the couch and you could have yourself fairly compelling social gathering, sheesh most SmartPhones these days carry all these components. If you think of the possibilities, virtual nightclubs, parties, the sky's the limit. Throw a few bits of profile matching stuff in and presto, yet another intrusive piece of technology that bugs the crap out of me.
That's just one thought, maybe that's to far ahead, maybe a step or two behind that but still you can see it all in the making with how things are going.
And as smart as Zuckerberg is he's made the rookie mistake of jumping into bed with Microsoft, that'll surly be his achilles heal.
Simple answer is this, Apple tries to run this germ free environment. People who are pro PC hate this because it's restrictive in nature. PCs have always been stung by the fact they are too open.
In a nutt shell, MS users in particular have been stung but now it's so common place to run AV if you have a windows PC people are aware of security if you have a PC. Apple users don't have this, they assume everything is a ok (just like Linux users) and it's unsuspecting.
All it takes is one or two reaalllly nasty germs to enter Apple's sanitary environment and thats it.. Game over.... And in a big way.
hypothetical...
You've seen the rsa issue. Imagine if that was too happen to verisign and hackers could make apple friendly ssl certs, a couple of/etc/host files changed on a couple of big name ISPs. Good night Apple.
Want any examples of possible ways to dismantle? Happy to offer senarios.
Go look on the official apple discussion forums, it's been hammered with people having their money stolen AS WE SPEAK.
Apple knows nothing about security, i've been working in the industry for years and it's a common denominator, their lack of practice will finally catch up on them. 1 word Sony.... Nothing separates Apple from any other vendor and for those who think otherwise are just showing their ignorance / arrogance...so on a so fourth
Come on, Mac has been running a true multiuser os just a little longer than PC, so permissions? Really? Nah. Apple has HAD an insignificant market share till now, Apple drives most of it's popularity from it's mobile technology with most of it's revenue coming from the iPhone alone, the rest is iPad/iPod/workstations if you look at the figures Trojans and otherwise making a piece of malware for Mac would be akin to making a virus that only goes after Dell PC's alone.
I know that the Apple fan base may think otherwise but rationally logically all the above it simply isn't so.
May I point out that there is currently an attack on happening on Apple's AppStore, what may come of this may be a good indicator of how prepared Apple really is....
No, you're forgetting one important factor. MS wasn't up with the whole AV process / industry. Remember the really cool partnership Symantec was ranting and raving about opening the doors of heaven to MS programmers giving them literally the keys to the kingdom? Shortly thereafter MS stabbed them in the back creating their own solution?
I would imagine MS being in the AV industry much sooner but they first had to exploit the knoweldge to get in to the industry originally.
The moral of the story is Apple is unprepared for personal security, mainly because their marketshare kept them under the radar. Mobile technology that Apple has created has been done in such a way that breaching the iGadget is going to be tough, they've forgotten about their workstations though and the debate that "it wont happen to me because I have a Mac" is no longer valid.
Facebook, damn that was sooo 2011! The "hard on" the Social Network movie has given the geek world today will eventually go limp. I'd say around the time MS does what it does best. Fuck all their partners when they least expect it, steal a sizable marketshare and borgify the general population.
They sink 240 mil into FB (salting its company value) and then FB lets MS implant their spies throughout the office, setup exclusive ad deals, and put a like button on Bing. Zuckerberg whose supposed to be this visionary doesn't even it coming.
- Take Nokia and factor in Skype. MS has made cell phone carriers obsolete. - Take Skype and link it with MSN and Hotmail, build a FB import tool (which they could do in house). MS has made FaceBook obsolete. - Take XBOX, Kinect, link it with PayTV, Skype and BlueRay. MS has just created an all in one black box that does everything for the home.
The history of the IT industry is about to repeat itself. Sell your shares in Apple if you've still gottem.
I was going for generalization here, if your to use a modern calendar to predict historic events to conclude an apocalypse date. These people are missing the fact the old school calendars were based on a 10 month system not a 12....
It's not my _only_ problem, and yes if the calendar wasn't the basis of the EOD event then 21/12/2012 wouldn't hold it's numerology value to it.... And if you factor in the 2 extra months it voids the whole correlation theory these nuts proclaim.
The problem I have with this Mayan and other silly calendar based EOD prophecies. Since I was indoctrinated by Roman Catholic values (thanks mom and dad!) one thing I know is that the Caesar occupation of Rome lead to the butchering of our 10month calendar... October is the 10th month of the year FFS and July and August was introduced out of some need to satisfy a bunch of ancient egotistical usurpers.
I never really did the math but if you were to ever use our contemporary calendar to predict anything that factors in events pre AD events your going to over shoot it by at least few years!
Surprising no body ever factors in the little details:)
Aside from the ethics behind boosting, nothing really. I agree with you on that Sony needs to be pulled into line regarding this. I know so many clueless 15 year olds that habitually steal PS accounts.
PCI isn't even going to come into play here which is quite astonishing. The upset consumer going for the cash grab wont be the issue. It will be Mastercard and Visa.
Yes and no. Being an Xbox Live player (hate to say this cause its MS we are talking about) but you can enjoy gaming without the posibility for account Hijacking. The only real problems Live has is people boosting the game.
PS on the otherhad, first off its a free service, 2nd it's continually having Script kiddes hack the game steal accounts. In fact I don't think I have ever met a single PS player that hasnt had their game hacked, messed with, or account stolen.
It seem's lose in the article (because there isn't anything definative suggesting it was done on purpose) but there is definatly plenty of malious activity taking place on PS network. This was bound to eventually happen.
And this is why I wont be using harddisks for anything of value. I've printed off the contents of all my storage devices on A4 sheets of paper in raw binary format, recently I've had to renovate the garage to cater.
Oh Slashdot, this is not news. IT lawyers have been addressing this for ages. If the SPA doesn't have clauses in place to protect customer data, simple, dont go with them.
The bigger concern is where the data is storred and who's viewing the data. Any buyer out there who is looking at Cloud must ask all these questions before signing up.
If you pay peanuts you get monkies, I think that sums this up!
Lets break this down a little. Say your a Grocer and you sell 10 Oranges and 20 Limes per day. Oranges sell for $100 each but Limes only sell for $50, as soon as the Oranges start selling at 9 per day and people start buying 21 Limes so on and so fourth the damage the Limes are making to the Oranges is a lot harsher. Its far better for the Oranges to be in a position where both are sold at $75 each and then you sell 15 Oranges and 15 Limes per day.
I'm guessing you also saw the article stating 50% of Apples revenue is just iPhones so that's a fairly scary notion if the TFA is right. A little bit more FUD in the media is enough to scare investors.
Don't buy it. Apple is backing down on a lot at present, Skype lost its handcuffs (which makes facetime redundant) and they tried going after Samsung on patients only to have the rest of the industry bitch slap them back into reality. Half the telcos, handset manufacturers, etc want their own App Stores. The list goes on and on...
Just like MacBook pro the profit margins will drop. Apple paved the way for mobile devices, granted, but just like Microsoft who had their massive growth bubble it does have to end somewhere, the when is really the question.
Lets not forget Motorola was the M in A-I-M technologies, IBM being the I. Eric Schmidt was on the board of Directors of Apple for some time. We are talking about intelligent technology partners putting next to no resistance into play. These guys have not worried about Apple as much as you'd expect and to play catch up hasn't been all that strenuous for them, we have yet to see things get nasty.
Apple doesn't have the rep of being like a Microsoft in the industry, that is playing the bad ass, because it needs all its friends to play nice together with them to keep their cosy position... this as follows
iPhone Primary Contractors - a partial list Software and design Apple USA Assembly Foxconn?, Quanta, Unknown Taiwan TFT-LCD Screen Sanyo Epson, Sharp, TMD Japan Video processor chip Samsung Korea Touch screen overlay Balda Germany Bluetooth chip Cambridge Silicon Radio UK Chip manufacture TSMC, UMC Taiwan Baseband IC Infineon Technology Germany WIFI Chip Marvell USA Touch screen control chip Broadcom USA CMOS chip Micron USA NOR Flash ICs Intel, SST USA Display Driver chip National Semi, Novatek US, TW Case, Mechanical parts Catcher, Foxconn Tech Taiwan Camera lens Largan Precision Taiwan Camera module Altus-Tech, Primax, Lite On Taiwan Battery Charger Delta Electronics Taiwan Timing Crystal TXC Taiwan Passive components Cyntec Taiwan Connector and cables Cheng Uei, Entery Taiwan
Yep, Apple profits but so do all these guys... and more... even Samsung, sheesh (probably not as much now:))
Absolute bullshit, profit and value goes hand in hand for existing shareholders as it shows stability on their investment as it buffers them. Desirability is a different discussion and that has got more to do with marketcap and what's fashionable based on predictability.
As for not understanding finance I don't want to understand it I prefer to understand the real world. People who live in "bank world" have learned nothing from the GFC - just taught the wannabe Gordon Geko's of the world how break the rules and put more of them in the game.
Having said that maybe your right, hit generating exercise fine no problem.
> A company stock price is based on among other things the expected growth of the company. Apple is growing faster than MS
That's what I'm trying to say but the article is insinuating (though trying to sound bias at the same time) that if you bought Apple back in 2000 you've done well however they are also saying this wont last forever and that competitors are now in catch up mode and making ground - 2015 is not far away and to claim that Apple will behind that soon is a pretty big call.
I'm not convinced about profitability on iDevices holding much clout it is after all business (cold and calculated). Just because iDevices "had" high margins in the past (and present) if the competition does make enough ground Apple wont get way with it for to long, telcos will simply sell the alternative until margins drop which is what this article is kind of dancing around.
Bottom line: Apple has been by far the superior investment over the past decade. Next: Revenue
Bottom line: Apple's fiscal year 2010 revenue edged Microsoft's, $65.2 billion to $62.5 billion. (Note: Microsoft's fiscal year is July through June, and Apple's is October through September.)
Bottom line: While Microsoft still generates more profits than Apple, the gap has narrowed significantly. If current trends continued -- a big if -- Apple would likely top Microsoft's profits in a couple of years.
My Bottom Line: Microsoft is still more profitable therefore the value of the company is higher but less desirable to buy in to because it has so many shareholders. Apple went through a growth spurt because of its mobile device sales and if you had stocks back then whoopty doo for you. On the flipside the future hold uncertainty since everyone keeps pointing out that Microsoft is expected to beat Apple in marketshare and Android has already started killing it in the market.
So is the TFA
a) trying to rub it in the faces of the people who didn't buy Apple stock in 2000? OR b) trying to hint to Apple investors the fun in the sun is over time to sell up?
Personally i think its time to breakout the Tarot cards and see what they have to say...
