For many businesses, a database is the vital organ that lives, breathes, and protects precious data -- the treasured jewel of their enterprise. Everything they know, and every way to know it, is dictated by these all-powerful tools.
The author definatly sounds like a product of the 60's or the 70's.
While there are other popular database products available, such as Sybase, we will save a full comparison for another time.
Theres no such thing as philosophy! totally preposterous to even think! religion and non-coherent story telling (the bible) is the truth to life and this soulless creature will be damned to the pits of hell along with Gandhi and the dalai lama
Whenever you see a screenshot of MacOS its always with a shot of Safari, ITunes or Corel Draw. Whenever you see a screenshot of Windows its always the Control Panel, Windows Media Player, MS Office, or IE.
Whenever you see a screenshot of Linux its always with shots of people using Fractial Apps, drawing PCB Diagrams, or something to do with the planets orbit.
All they need to do now is to be able to the same with MacOS and then you'll be able to download mp3's and draw pictures with one os, watch porn and write word documents with the other, and lastly be able to discover the cure to cancer the last os and the great thing is you'll be able to do this all off the same computer.
Yeah, but no, look i can see your point here but windows doesnt have the cli support like nix to support this.
Its tough enough to manage a windows "server" like a nix box with the gui support incorpoerated. If they are going to remove these elements the very least they should improve process management and debugging facilities, cli based application logging.... the list of what windows needs before this system can be incorpoerated and successfully utilised is fairly long, they'll need to address these issues before they can sling this off properly.
Dont get me wrong computers are wonderful and i love using them (i still even live in my mothers basement) but i remember the day when it was insulting for any self respected nerd to rely on mouse functionality and a vesa based gui...
Now its considered cool and okay, well its not! computers should be difficult, they should take hours of your time figuring out complex comand lines (awk & sed for instance) to achieve simple day-to-day tasks. We should all stop posting on fancy vbulletin forums, using gaim, and skype and go back to using BitchX or epic3 irc clients, and we should use pine for our email and write our documents in pico. As for web browsing there is nothing wrong with lynx.
I guess the only good thing about GUIs is the ability to look at porn and thats where fvwm95 comes in and this should only be accessed behind closed doors.
I have like this image in my head now of this "queer eye for a straight guy episode" where they start replacing they take on this computer geek and they start replacing his pcs from x86 to mac and that blonde guy going "there you go, now you can do your online dating in style!"
What about the plathora of secuirty issues we are faced with today, combine that with a preempted identity management system and you spell disaster.
It would bring on a new level of phishing one that would be alot more difficult circumvent and alot easier to exploit once the phiser has what he needs from their victims.
Engineers and techs are very smart people but sometimes they lack the day-to-day vision around the issue.
Plus, im sure there'll be a bunch of eager hackers waiting patiently for this to come along, if they are able to stick linux on an ipod i'm sure they'll be able to get around this.
It sounds suspiciously like memory segmentation and/or writeable bit in the page tables. It has been around since the days of the VAX at least, and in Intel chips since the 386 (and the i890 which preceded it, but died).
I dont think it would be to do with the PFNs since they are an OS contributed aspect run by the VM subsystem, but i belive it would be inherintly a form lowerlevel memory protection it would make sense, but again i can see something like this largly influenced by the OS and not by a specific chip on the mobo.
Totally agree about the artical, it wasnt even worth reading!
The thing ive been thinking about is that a rootkit these days can mean allot (almost pretty much anything malicious) BUT essentally RK was something designed to allow remote access back into a system for expoit, this was its origninal purpose and hence the coined term ROOT KIT. E.G a fake su that would operate normally but enable the user to use the program to gain root again or a fake telnetd which would do the same.
If keeping to these levels of standard a _proper_ RK doesnt do anything really out of the norm from what other applications do, E.G Open a port and allow a person root access to a system. Its simply a system put in place to bend secruity levels or change an annonymous user to admin with the correct "Open Sesimee" type trickery.
Then we look at the types of issues that i was before hand relating too, checking for mass disk wipes or changing of system registry (lets call this the new vouge rootkit behaviour). Even if a malicious program is able to do this and a special chip on the motherboard is designed to stop this, how on earth is it going to monitor block device activity?!?!
Block devices are all different, they use different driver sets, standards (scsi / sata / ide) and further to that have their own individual processor units that are indpendant of the CPU, so it makes that idea very difficult to swallow.
I guess a system can be put in place to safe guard kernel memory and perhaps selected memory regions, but i would hardly call this ROOT KIT protection and it would mean os intervention in some cases to properly lay out the rules for the chip to bide by.
The only way i can see such a device operating successfully is if the system has a read ahead feature on the currently running Code Segment, which may spark inefficencies in the system. Or perhaps when the system is loading the binary in memory do the checks then, again inefficencies would crop up.
Then there are going to be applications which will need to utilise the same patterns of operation that malicious programs use, E.G Uninstallers which wipe considerable amount of data off block devices for instance.
Perhaps such a system could be implemented on a software level on the OS's buffer cache, sort of like the way the Linux Secure Journalling system was going to operate, but this was thrown out the window because of inefficencies.
Your wrong, DEAD WRONG MOFO!!
Hollywood is renowned for producing non-fictional entertainment that is completely accurate... YOU KNOW ABSOLUTLY NOTHING!!!
I've seen lots about not probable or not possible but lets look at it this way, how big is the internet? next question how many possible methods of terrorism can exist? some I can think of are; air traffic control (die hard style); automated flood gate control (I've seen HPsUX computers that do this); what about the manipulation of satellites; and affecting train routes, collisions and subway disasters?
If you really think about it anything technological that requires a computer is at risk to "cyber"terrorism.
Now okay most of these services are not live on the internet and can't be done in some afghani basement, but on US shores with the proper utilisation of inside Intel of infrastructure, social engineering, etc.
Looking beyond the simple break down of the technical problems associated with such a threat look at the practical day-to-day ones..
Okay so lets take a step back and have a look at MS's past wonderful contributions to computing standards..

You have brought up a major issue with the adoption of ODF which has been discussed on/. for quite sometime, I think the obvious strings being pulled behind this resistance which is a typical wool pulling excerise that MS engauges in quite regularaly.
Sadly they usually get their way just like the TCO issue with linux, come'on! for crist sakes! are people idiots? yes they are! MS knows this, MS knows that we (nerds) know this but still how many times do we hear their nonesense _independant_ studies where people use them as a basis of argument and really i dont want to hear any counter remarks about this particular issue (I know this is/. and we all love to argue in these parts) but if you argue this point my only comment will be you need to stop using a GUI's to run a server stop playing the cowboy and learn how to be a proper sever admin! (now back on topic)
Okay maybe am a little bit rash but heck, if people are buying the MS methods of persuasion to keep their product in use for their Govt, so be it. However, when will it be time for the counter attack to approach, where's Google amoungst all of this? I would like too see what will eventuate with all these companies detesting MS actions and as a result and build up in joint arms to attempt to slay the giant beast? The best way of doing this? Kill their office revenue, their biggest form of revenue but its definatly not going to be easy.
Now okay, MS currently on top, true by far but these other companies have all these wonderful strategies in play to work agaisnt MS and all i've heard so far is "oh ms has already won" BS! theres Google, IBM and Sun and whoever else who would love try to trip MS when ever the chance is available? and okay MS is smart and strategically minded, but you cant say the opposition isnt either?
I guess really only time will tell though, but there really has to be a counter attack somewhere otherwise why is Google offering a lending hand to OO?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but:

I think more so this distro should be acklowedged by Toy vendors, it would be a real useful tool to use in kids products such as a "tickle me tux".
