I hardly think that its an indoctranation using Linux, perhaps the biggest thing that will be impressed on the kids will be the cuddly penguin and perhaps increase stuffed penguin sales. It really seems like a great idea and hopefully Toy vendors actually see it in working action and actually plan the usage of their Toys around it.

I can totally understand why Dell is there, the sales model behind Dell is brilliant. You dont need to see a PC before you buy it unless you get off on fancy cases and sexy keyboards.

So for 90% of people who need a new computer they need it to be a) cheap b) working order with good support, Dell provides this without the shopfront therefore reduces overall cost. They also offer good server products with easy to setup business leases and an array of SLA services so they have that market in the bag.

I guess the only real market they dont reach are the gamers who want to custom build their PCs to be a 900lb gorilla in system performance. But still they are flexible enough to cater to these people if need be.

The fact its listed more then once, i agree could be considered a bit of the top and the fact they are getting praise for specific peripherals like monitors is a bit odd if you ask me ... seems like the list is a little bit too 'particular' on personal favoriates rather then a soildly investigated and surveyed top 100.

I can see what your saying as I perhaps jumped a little bit off topic with my original post by using memory protection as a point of argument because it more so outlines the fact that it stops the OS from acting like a deck cards when there's problems on an application level and doesn't really pertain to legacy and backward compatibility development which MS has to be aware of when designing patches.

I'm intrigued by the OSX design though as it above all seems like the most sensible approach and something that the other OS models could really lend from particularly windows in this case.

  8. Re:It's just not that simple... on Why Can't Microsoft Just Patch Everything? · · Score: 1

The OSS method is definitely has this edge, people love to badger and say Linux's design is not concise and its just hacked together left right and centre. From my view I know enough about the Linux kernel to know people who say this have never really looked at the Linux kernel source or even understand the theoretics behind Linux and if they have never looked at it closely enough and actually seen some of the extraordinary methods of implementation it upholds, which of course has been lended from allot of various methods and standards of the UNIX flavors.

Now you look at the BSDS and perhaps they have a bit more stricter order because they are not out to portablise as massively as Linux so its source files are not nearly as large but these sets of OS' also uphold the same concise nature.

I guess what my point here is that the OSS models of Operating System design are figuratively built around various core sub systems, with others built on top of one another then when you step out of the kernel the system is still layered but in a way that even though other systems rely on each other they are still strictly independent of each other, until you reach the application level where it pretty much takes exactly what it needs and then utilises it.

In Windows, I profess I know SFA about its real design I dare say allot of people are in this boat because the system is closed source but it seems to me that the only reason why these inter-dependant systems (and I'm going from what your saying here) fails and consistency of its sub systems are just available comes down to a lot of reasons. Perhaps one of the biggest ones which are commonly overlooked is that Windows wasn't originally intended to be a multi-user OS and it only reached a half decent level of multi-user capability when XP was released.

I have to say when I saw the way XP worked, my initial thoughts were, "ahhh Microsoft has finally caught on to the benefits of a real multi-user platform" by putting in decent a memory protection subsystem but I've always said also "its not nearly mature enough yet and still needs a lot of work before it can compared to the *nix's".

It makes you really think who the real 'hackers' are with OS's like Linux that have a concise design whilst Windows codes into each other causes inter-dependency issues once patched :)

GNU (what Linux utilises), BSD, Unix (the original) all made by academic NUTS working in university labratories and linux to this day is contributed by arrays of academics around the world who structure the os in the most efficent way possible.

Now lets take a look at microsoft, dos originally purchased off a uni student who didnt quite finish it, windows ripped off from xerox so someone else made this. When it became a streamline it started getting patched and blundered left right and centre this is what we call windows nt and windows ME (you remember these guys, ms would perfer they didnt).

Now as far as secruity is concerend its only in the last couple of years have they realised this issue needed to be remedied.. On top of all this they've even suggested (microsoft this is) that they should recode the whole thing from scratch because its so botched togeather..

I remember hearing that ms purchased themselves some sun programmers at one stage and sure they have piles of very good programmers working for them in their offices but you know your dead right about one thing ..

Your right about highly compensated and work on fulltime projects, but heck these projects have timeframes, deadlines and ofcourse viability factors, and viability of secruity was not recognised seriously by windows until the days of xp. On top of this deadlines sacrafise quality, not a problem in linux world because deadlines are not enforced passion, drive and excellence in knowelege is linux's underlaying strength, not making somebody else millions and billions of dallors.

it's amazing you guys delude yourself into believing you can seriously compete with one of the largest corporations in the world.

Linux has never gone out of its way to compete directly with microsoft, you dont hear the CEO of RedHat raving and romping around the office throwing chairs saying their going to kill their competition and you defintly dont see linux advocates stopping _anything_ that microsoft does directly, they mearly just do what they do and this is what directly affects ms (not the other way around).

Microsoft competes with linux, one reason, scared.. why? linux is the better product but just like in the movie Pirates of Silicone Valley when Billy Gates character turned and faced the Steve Jobs character in the final few scenes and Steve Jobs said "we have a better product" Bill Gates said "it doesnt matter" .. Too bad that internet and computers are evolving to the point where people are beginning to realise it does matter and for a lot of reasons.. but its up the experts to set the trends.

However, herein lies an important point; users are users, they rate what they can see, the GUI and the apps. They'd have to be working in a very strange company to be allowed to, for example, discover how much easier life is when config is all done by plain text files, i.e., to learn and appreciate the beauty of *nix. Thus, I'm really not sure how they are in a position to rate the OS/kernel.

I relate this to my above comments about users not really knowing anything better then windows, i suggest looking at what the newer distros of linux have to offer, perhaps looking at xandros or even suse, the problems that your discussing have been and gone along time ago. You have the advanced textfile based distros, slackware and debian (which even now can utilise the gui config apps if need be), then you have the simpleton versions xandros, suse, mandriva, etc
