  1. Re:So like... on Modded Hybrid Cars Get Up to 250 MPG · · Score: 1

Quite, I have a Smart roadster, so theoretically slightly less efficient than the normal For2 Smart and 50mpg is the _minimum_ mileage I get when I choose to thrash it.

A few years back I had a Citroen AX Diesel that would average 63mph and I once managed 71mpg with it. At the time Citroen were boasting that they were experimenting with new gearbox and tyres that could theoretically take it to 100mpg.

Things seem to have slid backwards since then, and now we're starting to realise that the downslide in mpg was just at the time when we could have done without it. I have a feeling this trend is going to reverse sharpish now...

  2. Re:X Prize? on Hydrogen Vehicle Generates Its Own Fuel · · Score: 1

The most fuel efficient car I ever had was a Citroen AX 1.4 Diesel, that would do 65mpg day to day and up to 72mpg if I was careful. They did have a demonstrator model with a revised gearbox and low friction tyres that could do over 100mpg. That was back in the early 90's, now Citroen seem to have reversed the trend and their current models are less fuel efficient, which just seems crazy to me. My current car does around 55mpg (petrol).

Of course this was smaller than your "medium sized sedan", perhaps that is part of the problem - needing to lug around that amount of metal is bound to affect consumption. Learn to drive smaller, lighter cars!

I was thinking the same thing in reverse: The European Union has drafted an anti-spam directive which is IIRC due to come into force later this year. Hurrah!... Except of course that every bit of Spam I recieve here in the UK where I can identify the source has originated from somewhere in the US, so any EU directive is of no use to me. The EU seems to be doing its bit for your SWAT taskforce, could you ask the US government to catch up? Ta.

  5. Multiple copies of art assets on Are 'Server Emulators' Legal? · · Score: 1

I can't comment on the legality of emulating the server code and communications protocol, but in the Everquest case I'd assume the server needs to use significant quantities of the art assets from the game. For example, when the server is moving NPCs around it needs information on the world geometry for collision detection and path planning.

If you run the server on a seperate machine from the client, you'll need two seperate copies of the geometry data, when you've probably only paid for the copy on the client machine.

Are you distributing geometry data with your emulator? In this case I'd say it was definately illegal.

  6. Childline in the UK on Slashdot Meets The Pinkerton Corp. · · Score: 1

There is a charity in the UK called childline which gives anonymous support to kids and works to raise awareness of the problems they face and lobbies for constructive solutions.

Check out their website www.childline.org.uk, especially the factsheets on bullying.

I'm sure that approaching the problem in this way would be much more successful than the approach suggested by WAVE.

    Perhaps this should be added:

I live outside the United States and Canada. Can I still buy things from your store?
Oh yes, we're perfectly willing to take your money, we just don't want to include you in the benefits of being our customers.

    *double sigh*

Why would they be willing to ship the competition prizes to me if I ordered them, but unwilling to give me them as a prize due to the "complexity of international legal requirements".
