... chicks are computer geeks too - not just guys... ur looking at one right here - maybe you should look outside the cubicle square for once and realise we are just as smart as you, and i only think scientifically and DONT flirt as a means to get attention.. i love to solder bits and pieces, fart around with networks and made my own remote control boat once..
mmmm everyone can be a geek, not just an american male like you are... yike
With all of these industrial ir reforms, welfare reforms, and terror reforms, soon I'll be getting arrested for calling little Johnny a loser on my blog as well. I'm sure that they won't find EVERY blog that is being written by French people - GO FREEDOM of SPEECH (while it lasts)!!
There's been little tv's around for a damn long time now! Why does everyone think it's a NEW technology for? I remember seeing one in Grade 8(1996) at school and even before that. All they were was this little tv screen on the top half, buttons on the bottom half, and a big aerial to go with it. Geez you idiots..
I have wireless broadband, and for a split second I WAS going to consider getting VOIP for local phone calls and such. Just last week, my dad and brother said they wanted to use Skype for audio (ie microphone) talk, so that the whole family (yes all 11 of us) could chat at once (possibly).
I got this Skype thing (well Firefly has been around longer but anyway), and as SOON as I made my first call, the DAMN microphone didn't work! AAARRGH! So I found out that Skype automatically MUTED my damn microphone as SOON as I made a call or someone called me! Looking at the skype forum for an answer (http://forum.skype.com/search.php?mode=results&si d=83696fae9b3425f540f3148286a72448), I found out that heaps of other people have this problem too. The second person I ever rang up on Skype has the EXACT same microphone muting problem.
My point is, what's the damn use of buying VOIP when it is STILL BUGGY! Btw, I tried a 3-way conference call, and there was horrible feedback and echoing occurring. So again, what's the damn use? Nothing! At least if I used a normal phone line (ie from PABX or whatever), I would still be able to call people, without relying on my wireless connection. Thanks to those lovely raindrops and the extra surface area they have, I can't rely on using VOIP during even a damn rain shower cause my wireless net would cut out. Ahhh dear..
I must be your twin sister or something because all i did as a kid was read encyclopaedias, books, watch the news, read the paper and read basically EVERYTHINg every dAMN day! no wonder i went psychotic WITHOUT any drug use! My addiction (which everyone tells me isnt a bad one), was and still is - learning! Just learning! the point is, a habit like mine would only turn life-threatening according to how gullible your brain is. For example, I won some music award in grade 10 when i was 15yrs old - so what did i get? i got this book about looking into the mind of serial killers, and the other book i got was called 'The Odd Brain' by Carl Jung. Now I don't know HOW many times I read that book between the end of 1998 and august 2002, but soon you can train yourself and will automatically become a hypochondriac like me. Btw the book basically listed heaps of mental/psychological conditions in a "cool" way (ie a girl drinking 20L of water, fear of heights, spiders etc).
With what you asked about how to unlearn your habits - i can do it! you just have to have the ability to pick up the thoughts behind why you are going to have a new habit - and talk yourself out of them logically before it forms. For example, one night, I just started washing my hands about 4 or 5 times because i "thought" there were germs everywhere on me. I talked to my subconsious and said, 'this is ridiculous - you don't need to clean your hands more than once - the soap is already on there once, so they can't get any cleaner - PLUS all those germs everywhere have always been there so what is different now?'
Just train your internal monologue (or the thoughts that are going in your head that you can "hear"), and you will be fine - none of this western world study bullcrap geez

eeek well at least here in the land of oz we don't vote for a dumbarse with no brains in his head who probably has an earpiece for everything he/she says! yike ive noticed that this thread has all american flags around *shrug shrug* - and you wonder why there are so many anti-american pple around the world now - if all they are caring about is wasting money on their coffers to get some dumbshit into office instead of looking after their pple a bit better (i hear some floods coming on) - aaaah dear.
heheh - what about my own case of information addiction? yes, believe it or not, i ended up going psychotic due to me learning TOO much information - ie reading encyclopaedias since I was around 6 years old, reading endless websites, newspapers (all that stuff), library books, fiction you NAME it! Plus studying mechanical engineering and working and playing music while living with a father who talks about conspiracy theories day after day (well i admit most of them are true but hey!) made me end up in the psych ward 2x - first for panic disorder, next for psychosis! i would like to know anyone else who has ended up getting psychosis WITHOUT using alcohol or drugs like me! yike if i lived in china i dont think i would be allowed to read a book or any type of media in my life! teehee im not sure if being psychotic is classed as insane or not - but woohoo i was there w00t
With reading all of this stuff about anxiety and panic disorders, I can thankfully say that I USED to suffer very badly from panic disorder - but not anymore! (My panic disorder cure site http://www.psychopanic.com/ )
With the fear of say needles (as with any fear), you have to learn to deprogramme the fear out of your head, prepare for the fear, and then confront it. With needles, you have to realise that they are a lifesaving tool, and that one day a vaccine or blood test could infact SAVE your life. You have to think in your mind that it is infact only a needle - and that if you prepare your mind for the little tiny prick of pain - that it won't be so bad compared if you start to freak out and fight it. You can tell those inner thoughts that needles are a fact of life, and the pain is very minimal. Once you have prepared yourself, it's time to face the fear with this bit of coaching. Eventually, you can learn to push your irrational thoughts out of your mind.
I will just write a quick solution for panic disorder to try and help those fellow sufferers out here:
Go for a long, peaceful walk
Focus on something else other than any pains or thoughts in your body/mind
Watch some tv (comedy is preferred)
Focus on a surrounding sound and listen to it
Think of a good, relaxing song in your head
Read a book
Use diaphragm breathing techniques
Deprogramme your thoughts
Lower the stress/workload in your life
Listen to some muscle stretching/relaxation tapes
Confront your fears
Use thought blocking techniques
I'm sorry to plug my site and all, but due to my panic disorder which I used to have, I started writing my own website to help others out there. One more thing - antidepressants are HOPELESS! Infact ANY medication given to you is only going to suppress the problem - not SOLVE it! Isn't what we slashdotters are - problem solvers?
I even have some breathing techniques too - a panic attack is caused when TOO many thoughts occur at once when your response to a situation ends up freezing your thoughts - the "incorrect" breathing method of mainly using your chest versus your diaphragm to breathe causes oxygen loss, and then you end up hyperventilating. To stop a panic/anxiety attack, just breathe in deeply with your nose for 5 seconds WITH YOUR diaphragm, hold for 5, then breathe out for 5 with your mouth.
