Of all the exchanges, the NYSE is THE most vulnerable because it actually has a trading floor where brokers and specialists execute orders. (AMEX and NY Board of Trade, have floors, too...but nowhere NEAR the scale of the NYSE. The NASD owns Amex anyway...and the NASD's automated system is the antithesis of trading floors.)

If something were to happen to 11 Wall St. (NYSE), trading would be halted indefinitely. Of course, they may have a redundant trading floor in one of their other buildings. But I wouldn't expect them to be able to handle the amount of volume they handle at 11 Wall St. That's why they have a ton of security outside. You can't walk near the building unless you have a NYSE ID, and you can't drive a car or truck very close either.

What I've learned is, power isn't necessarily the game-winner. Buy the machine that fits the need!

I have a Fujitsu B-2130 that is 1.5 years old. It's a beautiful, well made, and tiny machine. It has no internal CD/DVD/floppy drives, and the processor is only a celeron. But it has a touchscreen interface, which has made all of its (minor) shortcomings seem irrelevant. Considering I use the laptop mainly for holding digital pics, music, and (802.11b) surfing, the touchscreen is OUTSTANDING. Surfing on the couch with the machine in my lap is actually comfortable, and being able to hit the transport buttons in winamp with my finger is wonderful! I will never buy a laptop without a touchscreen again.

So I can't watch DVD's with my laptop, big deal. The new version of the B series has a PIII, anyway. I can't wait until it's time to upgrade!

It's called "cognitive dissonance". Studies have shown that people who are asked to repeat a sentence to an experimenter that is contrary to their normal beliefs, such as "I like pickles.", are likely to rate their enjoyment of pickles higher after they've spoken the words. It works the other way, too...if significant resources are invested in something, then the person is less likely to badmouth it because doing so would contradict their original behavior. This also explains why Microsoft employees generally have good things to say about the company, even though they know deep down that they are only serving Evil. 8-p

  11. If the model names are "Metro" and "Pro"... on What is 'IT'? · · Score: 1
A lot of people have been speculating that it's a personal transport of some kind (hovercraft?), based on the comments about IT replacing current "dirty, expensive, sometimes dangerous" products, and restructuring cities and the like around it. According to the article, the Ginger models will be named "Metro" and "Pro", which also supports the transport theory. I would imagine that a "Metro" would be an economy-level transport device that allows urban commuters to get around cheaply, while the "Pro" would be a high performance Ginger for fun and longer distance transportation.

The only other possibility is that it is a bottomless coffee mug. :-)

  12. A clue not mentioned in this thread... on It's Official: Deckard Was A Replicant · · Score: 2
I have a book called "Film Noir" about the making of Blade Runner, and it discusses the possibility of Deckard being a replicant. It gives some examples of clues to this effect within various cuts of the movie (including the Director's Cut). I was surprised to not see much mention of the book in this thread. I don't have the book with me, but one clue I remember vividly that hasn't been mentioned are the replicants' "glowing" eyes.

Eyes were a recurring symbol throughout the movie: the VK test focused on the eyes, Choo's Eye Shop, etc. In at least one shot of every "known" replicant of the movie, that character's eyes appear to "glow". (It's kinda like a photograph with red-eye.) This is not a fluke...Ridley Scott had to light the scene very specifically to achieve that effect. In addition to each known replicant, Deckard's eyes glow in one scene as well. It's the scene where he tells Rachel that he would not come after her since she saved his life, but that somebody would. He is in the background and sort of out of focus, but the glowing eyes are all too evident.

Origami was Gaff's way of communicating with Deckard...he made a chicken to call him a coward when he first goes to see Capt. Bryant, and he makes a little guy with a boner when they go to Leon's apartment to say he knows Deckard is attracted to Rachel. But without the unicorn dream scene, the origami unicorn at the end means nothing. I think it's a shame Ridley Scott revealed the secret to this scene, but I think that maybe he was just saying that the unicorn dream scene simply alluded to the fact that Deckard was a replicant.

  13. Re:WAP and HDML? on Google Releases WAP Search Tool · · Score: 1

We did a WAP demo at work for internal purposes, and ended up doing it in WML because more phones worldwide supported it. It ran just fine in the UP SDK 3.2, as well as the Nokia SDK. I assume that means it would work in all Up.Browser 3.1 versions. However, we haven't yet tested it on a real phone (the demo wasn't accessible via the internet). This was before UP.Link/Up.Browser 4.0 was available.

  14. Re:WAP and HDML? on Google Releases WAP Search Tool · · Score: 2
Phone.com "highly recommends" that developers use HDML for creating sites to be viewed using the UP.Browser (read: all SprintPCS and apparently Verizon phones). Other browsers, i.e. Nokia's, do not support HDML at all. So, there is already a rift forming between sites to be used by the UP.Browser (United States), and other browsers (the rest of the world). However, it is my understanding that UP.Browser is WML-capable. Phone.com just pushes HDML...with the apparent intent to force sites to provide content in a language only THEIR browser supports. Is it just me, or does that seem wrong? I can just hear the site developers agonizing, "We have to create TWO sites in TWO separate languages in order to provide access to ALL phones?"

Nokia's browser is pretty nice, and their developer's kit is slightly more sophisticated than Phone.com's. I don't know what Nokia phones contain their browser, but I'm fairly certain that none of them are available in the U.S. Fortunately, it seems Phone.com is giving up on HDML, as their most recent SDK (v. 4.0) does not even support it. It's WML only!
