Linux is not ready for gaming, Valve is making a huge mistake. Developers will try and encounter tons of problems like that and most will abandon the port project. Just going from DirectX to OpenGL is a lot of hard work for nothing from a graphic programmer stand point.

No, the purpose of DirectX is to make the best graphics API available so that developers use it, and it's doing an awesome job at it. The fact that is not cross-platform is only because Microsoft don't see any advantages at working for free and doing it, why would they?

Slashdot is filled with haters, but just to do the inverse I'm really happy about this. DirectX always been top-notch, high-tech and the easiest API to work with for developers along with the best performance from shaders (yeah I know OpenGL have more brute draw calls per sec). This will push graphic technology forward. I'm very eager to see it, and I'm happy that Microsoft is still going because ATI Mantle was limited to a single vendor and couldn't succeed for this only reason.

If Portal crash, you have a serious issue with your computer because it's one of the easiest game to execute. Install your drivers dude. As for Linux being stable for servers, well that's exactly what Linux excel at, you give it some predetermined set of applications and rules and you stick with it. Totally the inverse of using a computer for a desktop usage (which include playing games) where you keep changing installed applications all the time. Windows is still far far ahead on this domain.

Minecraft I agree. Can't find the appeal either. It's a sandbox construction game. In 15min you've seen everything the game has to offer and you have to "invent" your own stories. Can be good for artistic types, but honestly they better invest time in real art application(2d/3d) than playing Minecraft. As for Portal though, well, I don't understand your point. Puzzle are actually very smart (not stupid), story is great, humor is great, graphics are great, the game is smooth and bugless, level design and exploration is top notch. There's nothing dull about completing the campaign once. Few hours well invested.

Most reviewers are just stupid though and it's "in" to bash new games for no reason these days saying that their nostalgic titles were better, when it's clearly not the case.
