  1. But what about this... on Astronomers Explode Virtual Supernova · · Score: -1, Troll

Scientists just recently learned new things about our closest star that are changing the way they study/view it. How is possible that we can create a reliable simulation based on information that's changing?

I'm no astrophysicist, but it seems sketchy. So they made a movie. So what?

  4. Reminds me of something... on MySpace Predator Caught By Code · · Score: 0

MySpace saying they didn't have the technology reeks of the same tactic used by the Saw manufacturers in response to the SawStop technology. If they don't offer a service like this, they can claim a lack of responsibility. In case you don't know, SawStop stops a saw as soon as it hits flesh -- the manufacturers said no thanks for this very reason. But if they offer this service and a sex offender gets through because of some sort of idiotic programming error someone will sue them as fast as possible.

If they screw up the code that, say, rotates a signature or something (proud to say I've never even been to myspace -- had to make up a feature here) no big deal. If they screw up their MySpace-anti-pedo feature, all hell breaks loose.

This is great for them. They don't have to support it OR its failures and the users get the benefit of the code anyway. Can't say that I blame them.

  5. Only 8 planets... on Billions of Planets In Milky Way? · · Score: 1, Informative
Sorry guys, no matter what these people saw, there are only 8 planets -- not 16 -- and certainly not billions. From the IAU site:
RESOLUTION 5A The IAU therefore resolves that "planets" and other bodies in our Solar System, except satellites, be defined into three distinct categories in the following way:

    (1) A "planet" is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

    (2) A "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

    (3) All other objects except satellites orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as "Small Solar-System Bodies".

    (emphasis mine)

The page goes on to list the eight planets:

The eight "planets" are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
I can't help but think it's a pretty stupid requirement, but it is what it is...

So what if Johnny can't code? Does everyone really need to be able to code? What if the article lamented the inability of the Johnny to fix the family car. Who cares? Coding is a specialty -- not one of the three 'R's. That Johnny can't code is not a concern. Tell Johnny to go outside and play.
