And I predict that in 20 years computers will be so big and expensive that only the 12 richest kings of europe could afford them.
I have learned from my mistakes though
WOW 10 Meg you could never fill that up
WOW 50 Meg I could never fill that up
WOW 1 gig you could ever use that much space
WOW 4.3 gig i will never have to buy another drive again.
Now 2 18 gigs striped, I am saving my money so in 2 years I can replace them with 100 gig drives.
Software will always find to make your hardware outdated.
Yes there have been some unfortunate results. But humanity as whole has, benefited more than it has been damaged. And that's is true with anything for any type of progress, that the few must suffer so that the greater my benefit.
Best example I can think of chemotherapy, yes it is damaging to some parts of the body but in whole the body benefits more than it is damaged.
Second example, you work you but off everyday, but only your boss gets richer while you get shafted. It sucks that is how the world works.
Something for you to consider. We are going to change conversation that took place in the late 1400's to fit your argument.
Mr. Columbus- I think I have a quicker way to India that could cut our travel time in half. But I need to you to found our voyage to prove this.
Queen Isabella- Gee that sounds like a great idea, but we have this problem with the Moors right now we really need to dedicate 100% of our resource to it. Sorry
Now go find a History book and remove most of everything that happened after 1492.
As you should be able to see, exploration has great benefits; you should not abandon it because you have other problems.
You may not understand it but one the big reasons for space exploration is get a better understanding of how the universe works, have a better understanding of how the universe work we help everyone.
So don't just abandon something because the benefits are not 100% obvious. You never know we could just find the cure for HIV on Mars.
Seems like this would be a good way to get rid of atomic wate. Use it in a power plant, when it is used up there, put it in a rocket to blast it off into space. This would solve two problems at once, you get rid of the waste and get a Satellite into orbit. Then once the bird is in orbit, fire the rocket towards the larest atomic reactor in the solar system, and problem solved.
Simple just put a entery in you hosts file or DNS server,if you run one, that points you to google or some where else. Or you you run a proxy server setup a redirector. Here is web site with directions on how to set it up
I used to work for Microsoft and as long as you were not in sales, the only rule of the dress code was that you must were shoes, and they did not even really enforce it. I was told that one time someone came to work wareing their pajamas, just because they could.
Box 1: Windows ME
Box 2: Lots of differents OS's Windows 2k, Windows ME,Slackware 7 running X , and FreeBSD 4.0
Box 3: Slackware 7 also running X
Box 4: FreeBSD 4.0 also running X
Yes three of these systems do support serial console, but last time I checked X does not work too well over serial consoles. I know that you can say well just use a X server on Box 1 and access X over the network work. Again not a bad idea, but Win2k Pro and WinME does not work very well with remote displays unless you use third party software.
So as you can see One solution does not fit all, there are ones that fit certain solutions. Like yours a rack of servers, the serial console is a great idea. But have 2 or more desktop machines the KVM is the best way.
I find that rock, country , and what not are a real distraction while reading, and I find that classical and opera helps me to concentrate better, so you may consider changing the type of music you listen to.
He uses flaskmpeg to do it. I think it takes so long becuase he does a key frame every frame. All I know about it is how long it takes him. Though thanks for the link I will pass it on to him.
I have a frined that does this so that he can watch his movies on his laptop which does not have a dvd. The whole process of rippping and encodeing into mpeg 4 takes about 35-40 hours on his PIII 550 with 512 ram running Win2k.
Use a tape drive and then cahce the next 10 or so songs to be played into a ramdrive. I would think that tapes would be less proned to being damaged by vibrations.
I have all my computer eqiupment setting on some wire racks. I put casters on it, so now when I need to acces the back I just roll it away from the wall. It is the best setup I have ever found, I built a keyboard tray that is 3' wide for it, set of the racks to match the level I want the monitor and presto, I have a modular setup and all it cost we was 250, which would have been half the price if I had thought to look at sams when I bought the rack. No other setup even rack mount that I have found works as well and it is very inexpensive. Also think about leaveing enought space behind your desk for you to walk behind. I did that with my Home theater set up. I just cut access hole in the back and left enough space so I can walk behind it. Best of all this method is free, and works with all standard equiment.
I used to live about 30 mi, south of Dallas Texas and I could not get anything above 26.4Kbps. I also had to get a metro line to have a local call to dallas, so it cost me $75 a month with ISP for that crappy speed. But my brother has told the people about 2 mi away that are in the GTE service area can now get DSL. So the moral of this story Southwestern Bell sucks.
Nope, Not only would you need a phase converter, I would also assume that if it is 208V, 240V is going to way of tallerance. What I want to know is how many amps this things draws. I am going to guess a around few hundred. We had a sun E10000 (I belive) at work and it drew 25 amps. To run this this thing would need it's own power main for most houses.
I wish I still had some moderator points left. Because I would moderate that down to about -2000. And who the hell moderated that up. That is is just plan sick, I came to read slashdot to get tech related info not to see obseen pics.

Nope only kernel level processes can bluse screen a nt box, user mode apps just gives a useless Dr. Watson

Yes booting off of a tape would be slow. I would suggest a cd or maybe zip in it's place, to boot off of, or maybe a small HD.
Use a tape drive and then cahce the next 10 or so songs to be played into a ramdrive. I would think that tapes would be less proned to being damaged by vibrations.

The TI-82 and TI-83, use a battery backup, it is a watch battery. If it is dead then there is no backup battery and every thing goes bye-bye.
