  1. To add to the pointlessness... on Verizon to Launch Mobile 'Chaperone' Service · · Score: 1

Weren't PlayStations modded so that pirated games could be played? Aren't cellphones unlockable? Wasn't there a guy who disabled kid's nanny software for $5 a pop?
I can see this going the same way - parents installed a Big Brother system on your cellphone? No problem, just go to the guy down the street and get it disabled for $5, then claim "it isn't working".
At any rate, the cellphone companies are going to rejoice.

  2. Why oh why? on Mapping a Path For the 3D Web · · Score: 1

Why does the web have to be (pseudo-)3D? What advantage is there to browsing Wikipedia in 3D? I've tried a few 3D file browsers, and they're just a gimmick, nothing I'd ever think of using on a daily basis. Screens are usually two-dimensionally oriented, and 3D messes it all up.
Moving vertices around in 3DS Max in a complex model is already complicated enough, gathering data online shouldn't be.
What advantage does this bring to me? I don't usually shop online, but I don't want to "walk" through a "3D virtual mall" either. I don't want to have porn ads suddenly jump out of a door and blow up in my face accompanied with a loud explosion while everyone on the business end of the screen gets a seizure...

  4. I can program... on Do Kids Still Program? · · Score: 1

I'm 13, and I consider myself fluent in Perl. About a year ago I decided to pick a language to learn. I picked Perl, downloaded "Beginning Perl" (a free online-edition exists, FYI) and read on. My latest project is a browser-based RPG powered by Catalyst, Perl's MVC framework.

  5. Other wastes of electricity on Standby Electronics a Waste? · · Score: 1

I still find it weird that there never are studies that refer to electricity that is actually, almost on purpose, truly wasted.

The oil heater I have in my bedroom sucks up 2000 watts with both resistances on. I'd bet that's a little more than what my computer alone uses during the whole night, let alone our TV on standby. The thing is, we do actually make sure all doors are closed in the bedroom when the heater is on, so as not to waste electricity (especially since it's not exactly cheap in Portugal).

Compared to the multitude of devices we have, such as a 1100 watt microwave oven, the oil heater is the most wasteful.
However, I'm pretty sure certain neighbours would leave an equivalent heater on with the windows open, wasting energy in the fullest sense of the phrase.

Idade/Sexo/Posição? It sounds like you're inquiring about one's "position", and not one's place... a better translation would be I/S/L, Idade/Sexo/Lugar. Unless you actually mean ... uhm, yeah, nevermind.

  7. Re:Class Distinction on IRC as a World-Changing Medium · · Score: 1

I second that. Go to #perl (or any programming language IRC channel) and you'll find someone discussing something completely off-topic.

Then, ask a question, and you'll get RTFMed, either because "you're just too dumb", "you're using Windows", "you're not using Linux", "you're using the wrong distro" or "I don't want to help you". Wait a few minutes and you'll be greeted by some developers talking about a weird new feature that's supposed to be in a version of some software that'll never come out.

The problem is that there are some helpful people, but in a channel of 300+ users, mostly idlers, their attempts to help serious people get lost in the merciless newbie-bashing performed by the channel's owners or oldbies. The "don't ask to ask" policy just doesn't work; ask to ask, and you'll get flamed. Ask a question, and, if you're lucky, you won't get flamed, you'll just get a witty reply. I don't see how IRC can "change the world", seeing as most of what it has accomplished so far has been pissing people off.

  8. Re:Next Gen p2p on BitTorrent User Guilty Of Piracy · · Score: 1

You can even make movies and TV shows about it (at least once a year on The West Wing and 24). You can't threaten the president, unless it's in fiction. That's why several books have been written as "real" fiction as a way to make such threats.
