  1. Spammers exposed their resources? on BlueSecurity Database Compromised? · · Score: 2, Informative

It looks like the spammers might have forgotten who they were messing with. They were essentially flooding a number of users of which a high percentage actually report their spam. Could it be that the sudden drop of their FUD spam e-mails to 0 over the last 6 hours be due to this mass reporting? In particular, to SpamCop.

  2. Is there an upswing coming? on The Continuing American Decline in CS · · Score: 1

This is a pretty small sample, and might be just random: In all my CS classes thus far in the last three years, I have had only 4-8 other students taking the same class (not that big of a CS school). However, apparently, they are expecting to have the first fully enrolled (intro core) CS classes next year for the first time in a number of years.

  3. That's funny you say that... on Abandoned Games · · Score: 2, Informative

I think one of the best examples of this was surprisingly enough by Microsoft Research. After abandoning Allegiance (a game truly ahead of its time), the game was continually run by the community, with them modding the game. Years after the fact, Microsoft Research thought the community's efforts were so great, they finally decided to release the source code for the game. What Allegiance is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegiance_(computer_ game) Where the community is/get the game: http://www.freeallegiance.org/ Definitely a fun game if you can get by the learning curve. One of the best team-work based games I've played. When you have 20+ pilots scramble to a single sector for base defense against an equally large enemy bombing convoy, it is a thing of beauty. (yes, the game theoretically supports 100 vs. 100; though the last time that happened was only in beta testing in 1999)

I never really thought about that. Though I also never used optimized builds for faster rendering in the first place. I just use it since it makes FF feel snappier (loading etc.).

Does anyone know of any SSE2 etc. optimized builds available? The Mozilla forums seem to have died.

Or you mean the antivirus companies that will be left behind. The "smarter" AV companies have been working at pro-active detection for a while now, through either virtual machine type heuristics (Eset, BitDefender's HIVE, Norman's Sandbox technology), or pro-active user/system intervention modules (Kaspersky in 6.0, McAfee's Entercept integration into VSE).
