Article is pure FUD. They run a series of articles attacking OOo OOo is much slower than Office at the moment. It has nothing to do with ODF versus Open XML. In any case the comparisons with Office's current implementation of XML and ODF (under OOo) were much closer.

When I used OOo I didn't think it was fast but it was nowhere near as slow or as much of a memory hog as this test found.

I'm much more interested in the Wine enhancements than the fact that Picasa is available, even though it should be a real benefit for desktop Linux adoption. If Google are using Wine to help get other software (such as Google Earth) onto Linux then it could really help mature Wine both directly and indirectly (through increased attention for Wine).

Other software vendors might be encouraged to look at using Wine to add Linux support quickly and cost effectively. The more developers patching Wine and the more programs available the faster Wine development will run.

Sure in some ways native development for Linux might be preferable but in the long run Wine can make Windows irrelevant and eliminate the vendor tie in that Microsoft have. Crossover Office creates a middle ground for people who want to run Linux but aren't ready to leave Office. When Wine reaches a certain level of compatability Linux users will be able to have the freedom to run whatever software they want. Ultimately there's a potential utopia where people use Wine instead of dual-booting Windows. Who knows if it will ever happen but I'm not against it.

Transmission losses represent a certain percentage of transmission. All they do is lower the efficiency. Use 2 cables in parallel instead of 1 and you halve the power lost through heat.

Fusion doesn't look like it's gonna be cheap anyway so it's just a balance between transmission costs and the costs associated with citing these facilities closer to their customers

Doesn't really seem like too bad an idea to me. There are plenty of times where calling is much faster and more effective than web or email based requests. Since ebay own skype it might be handy to be able to instantly call businesses through skype. You could talk to ebay sellers (If they want to include that option) to sort out product details and shipping etc. quickly. Another option would be yellow pages style ads where a local restaurent would have a facility to call and make a reservation from their website or ad. Many restaurants aren't bothered with web based reservation systems (and rightly so). Sure I can order a pizza online or check if a DVD is in stock but sometimes a phone call is just easier. It's usually much faster.

Making Windows default always leaves the option of ditching OSX (say if company policy required it or you sold the computer secondhand to someone with an allergy to Apples)

I was really impressed by the way they added an option in the Windows control panel. Its very thorough and shows that they've planned this all along. Gives users control of their options for Linux, OSX, Windows etc. Shame Windows doesn't include it because would be great for Linux users.

The precise wording of your contract with the school would determine whether you are allowed to GPL programs you write. Whether you are even permitted to contribute to GPL programs is less clear but even in that case the GPL limits distribution. In this case the most the school can do it say that they own the code you wrote and they can stop you adding your code into the GPL project. Since they don't own the code already in the GPL project they wouldn't be allowed to distribute it themselves without violating the GPL. If you wrote a program in the school subject to a contract then you were not permitted to release that program under the GPL (and you certainly shouldn't have transferred copyrights you didn't own to the FSF). In this case if the only GPL code in the program was code you wrote and GPL'd yourself then they would not be violating the GPL. In any case many schools have similar contracts but don't really understand the implications of the GPL or how to set policy in that matter. At the same time you could have damaged people using your code since the school would own the patents (if any) to code that they were using in good faith. It's a legal minefield that could have caused you a lot more trouble than you got. You should be glad that their business failed because if they had struck gold there could have been a nasty court battle.
