I'm asking if that truly is Ubuntus default or if the fuckheads at Fox changed it. I'm not saying that Gentoo is superior I'm just saying that its default is to turn it off to establish a basis of comparison since that is the Linux version I am most familiar with. Each person has their own flavor and I'm just curious if this is a security hole since I feel that if the directory tree is on by default that is a major security hole because I wouldn't want others to browse the site tree with files such as the one mentioned in the article.

No, that defeats the purpose and says "We give up, have your DRM protected content." It may be easier to run Windows applications but in the end the companies win. They will think we have accepted DRM and we will lose the rights we have to personal use with content. We need to stand strong and show companies that DRM will erode their bottom lines more than not having it. In the case of the UK you need to make your voice heard to the politicians in the House of Commons and get political pressure placed on BBC.

I used to work at a help desk at my college and one of the biggest annoyances was users telling us the one thing we already knew, the printer says low toner. That, we knew, was a lie a majority of the time. People could still print pages out that had no lack of toner. If it got light in some areas but was strong in others we would tilt the cartridge back and forth a couple of times and get a bunch more good prints out of it. All too often the HP laser jet that we had would report it was low on toner well before it was actually low on toner and out of toner.

Think of it this way, if a company has to pay a license fee because of a patent, then the consumer also has to pay that fee since they need to recoup the cost. So if there is a patent out there for something that a company had been developing before the patent or release before the patent they will have legal fees or license fees.

  17. Patents expire on TiVo Wins Permanent Injunction Against EchoStar · · Score: 0

Eventually the patent should expire and at that point the market would open up and prices would drop significantly. So if you don't like the idea of Tivo then you can wait. What is so bad about patent law? It's a win-win for all. New innovations are protected ecnourageing more innovation and it gives the consumers an appetite for when the patent expires and the market really opens up.

Should we get rid of patent law because it creates a monoploy for a period of time?

Correction, it is a monoploy but it most definatly is a win in the long run based on economics and the reasons I stated above. I was thinking more of the anti-trust laws before which I sometimes mix up.

  19. Re:this isn't that bad... on TiVo Wins Permanent Injunction Against EchoStar · · Score: 3, Informative

No they don't, the whole purpose of patent law allows for a developing party to be the only one allowed to make a certain innovatinve product so they can recover development costs and make a profit off of the idea. Then after a certain period of time they cannot receive funds from companies that wish to develop a product that does the same thing.

This helps encourage innovation by protecting the innovators from competition that could prevent them from recovering development costs. So in the end it does help the consumer because while at first only a few may be able pay for the cost of the product it shows to other companies that it is a product many more would be willing to buy.

Microsoft should be helping with this some as they are introducing the game rating "v-chip" into the OS so the parents can prevent them from running. Though towns should run free programs to train parents on how to use the technology. If parents are working two jobs to get their kids video games and those fluffs, then they should just quit, they dont need to waste effort on that. On the otherhand, if they are just trying to support the family then video games shouldn;t be an issue because they couldn't afford them in the first place. Parents that do only work one job and can easily afford such stuff are repsonible for learning to work the technology and the adults that are capable of handling such content and discerning that it is only a game should have the abilty to purchase that game without censorship. Parents don't need to argue with the kid, their word is final and complaints can be ignored: let the kid throw that tantrum.

Yahoo Plus would lose too much business if that was the case since its paying users would not be able to use their e-mail addresses with companies that they want to deal with, and therefore complain and just not re-subscribe.
