  1. Re:My take on Godwin's Law Invoked in Linus/Gnome Spat · · Score: 1

I don't really know about Gnome fading away. (I'm not trying to flame, I'm just giving my 2 cents.) Personally, I really do not like Qt and the way it interacts with the user. I have tried to use KDE many times, but it just doesn't feel right and it is not aesthetically pleasing like GNOME.

I agree that the KDE/GNOME split has hurt Linux, but not the way that you are talking about. The lack of cooperation between the two communities has hurt Linux. Having two large desktop environments is not a bad thing because it gives the user choice. (If we didn't have two, one of us would not get what we want!)

The whole, "Linus hates GNOME" thing really just needs to die. There has been a lot of recent activity to help KDE and GNOME folks work together, but Linus is really hurting this. He is throwing salt into the wound and trying to get rid of a window manager just because he doesn't like it. Linux is about choice and he is alienating a large plurality of the Linux community.

I realize that some KDE users are happy to see Linus flaming GNOME because they absolutely hate any other desktop other than their beloved KDE. (I'm not saying you are of this opinion ... I am generalizing.) However, what if the shoe was on the other foot? If Linus was attacking KDE, the attitudes of many KDE users would be much different (as well as GNOME users).

As for the whole patch situation, Linus just sounds like a 2 year old. "Take my patches now, or you are obviously suck doodoo!" Honestly Linus, this is ridiculous. I haven't seen the patches, so maybe they should be included. However, just because GNOME doesn't hold the same goals as you Linus, doesn't mean that it sucks. Most of the default options on GNOME are those that I would choose, so I don't have the need to do much configuration. And if I did, I would use another window manager. It is as simple as that.

I just think Linus needs to focus on kernel development, his domain of specialty. Leave user interface design to those that specialize in that. All he is doing is, as I stated before, throwing salt on the wounds ...

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I mean, look at all of the indications that we see from the company today. It is obvious that Microsoft realizes that Windows isn't always going to be a big cash cow. They have expanded their business so much over the past few years to add the Xbox, ramping up the search engine, expanding tools included in Office as well as adding new applications to their arsenal. I mean, how often do you see a Windows commercial anymore? You don't ... you see commercials about their other products. The problem for Microsoft is that people usually upgrade to the new version of Windows when they buy a new computer. There are still people running 98 (and possibly even 95)! Much to my dismay (I'm a Linux guy), Vista will gain dominance in the marketplace eventually. However, people do not upgrade their computers as often anymore just because hardware is not improving at such a fast pace as before. I guess we'll just have to wait to see what the future holds.

It really all depends on your interpretation. I, along most of the people in the church I attend, take a more liberal approach to the Bible when it comes to the story of creation. Times are represented in "days" just to make them more understandable to humans. I, personally, agree with evolution because the theory doesn't state how life began. It states how it evolved, ignoring the phenomena of creating the original, single celled organism. We see evolution and adaptation around us all of the time and cannot ignore it, but that still does not mean that religion and science cannot coincide. I mean, for many years people believed that the earth was flat, but it says in Isaiah that it is round. Of course, I realize that the "earth is round" fact was shot down by the catholic church, but the catholic church is a conservative Christian organization that has a bad habit of creating rules that were not originally prescribed in the Bible. Really, the interpretation of Genesis comes down to one thing ... how long is one day. Remember that it states (in Hebrews I think? don't quote me on that location though) that one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day to God. The concept of a day just puts things into context for a lot of humans that have difficulty realizing that time is irrelevant in an eternal existence. Most people don't consider that the 7th day of rest was simply God's way of giving us time to evolve into what we are today and what we will become in the future ... Of course, everyone has the right to their own beliefs. The only reason I posted all of this is because I wanted to express that not every Christian has their head in the sand. :)

I agree that teenagers don't always make the best decisions ... I was just one a few years ago. But that attitude is what causes teenagers to rebel against their parents. They shouldn't be treated as adults, but if you don't trust them, they will just do stupid things. I agree that parents should have full access to their children's whereabouts, but there comes a point where parents have to realise that in a few short years, that is going to be abruptly cut off. If you don't have a reason to not trust the child, why should you? Besides ... contrary to what most adults think, not all teenagers are bad. And those who are, where do you think they learn it?
