  5. science fiction explanation why this wont happen on Genetically Engineered "Smart" Mice · · Score: 1

i read a short story once about a couple who were having pioneering gene manipulation to produce a genius-child. one night they receive a message from their child in the future, sent backwards in time, telling them not to create him. apparently all humans who reach a certian IQ figure out a way to erase their own existence and hence achieve nirvana.

  6. Maybe, maybe not on Genetically Engineered "Smart" Mice · · Score: 5
This reminds me of several things I have been thinking about recently:

Evolution is not just about survival, it is about breeding. Individuals with poor genes may survive, but no hot chicks will want to fuck them, so they will not pass those genes on.

Many 'nerds' and other less-than-prime specimens are able to attract women through their high salaries and material security. However, studies have shown that up to 50% of their children were actually conceived in extra-marital affares with hot young studs, because women have a deep instinct to get the best DNA for their offspring.

Many people with what would be considered 'undesirable' genes are able to mate quite easily with other ugly, stupid people. Just look at an episode of Jerry Springer for evidence of this. There is a theory that these people are breeding faster (a girl's IQ is proportional to the age at which she first gets knocked up, and inversley to the number of children she eventually has) and therefore evolution is decreasing our average IQ.

Many of the markers developed by evolution to pick out potential mates are actually quite accidental 'red herrings' that are now propogated through the mechanism of evolution, but serve no real purpose. For instance, one day a caveman decides he finds large breasts attractive. He marries a girl with big tits. All his children inherit his desire for breasts, and also look for wives with big knockers. Eventually, having large breasts is considered a desirable quality in a mate, even though it serves no real purpose.

  7. your original point was about copyrighting compute on Lessig On DMCA, Adobe, The US Constitution And Fair Use · · Score: 1
your original point was about copyrighting computer code, not copyrighting numbers. my point was that they are not the same thing. you completely missed that, and you a fucking moron. a discussion of numbers is completely irrelevent.

however, i am not convinced that even your(irrelevent) examples themselves are correct. if Snell had written a book containing his Law and you printed copies of it, he could have prosecuted you. he couldnt have stopped you using the Law, and perhaps if you just copied the statement of the Law it would be allowed under fair-use... but his actual expression of it is copyrightable.

of course you cannot copyright a single number, in the same way you cannot copyright a word. But when your combination of numbers/words gets to be a certain size (sufficient to express an idea that is uniquely yours, i presume), you can enforce copyright over it.

there's no point debating this, because computer code is (mostly) not numbers, it is not laws of nature... it is CPU instructions, written text, sampled sound, drawn graphics, all of which are covered by copyright laws.

Anything represented on a digital computer is simply a binary number.

Evidently you have never taken a course in computer science.

Computers store configurations of electrons. These configurations correspond to 'on' and 'off' states. That is all. If you wish to interpret that as a binary number, that is your interpretation. A computer has no concept of 'number'. If you choose to interpret as text, you can do that too. Or you can even interpret the on/off states as a Britney Spears mp3.

IANAL, but I know copyright does not only apply to text. It applies to any form of recorded human expression. And those on/off states are certainly human expression.

the CPU fan will push the hot air away from the CPU... but then the heat will stay in the case. the CPU will continue to heat the air until eventually all the air inside the case is the same temperature as the CPU, at which point you may as well turn off the CPU fan as well.

he world would also be a better place if all food and housing was free. But given that we (or at least most of us) live in the real world, everything is not always appropriate to be free software.

It appears you do not even grasp the difference between free beer and free speech. Of course you cannot compare software to food or houses. Try comparing it to music, art and literature.

Of course, I have evidence to back up my statement. There are no free regular end-user applications that are superior to their closed source equivalents. Zero, Zilch, Nada.

So what exactly is this email client I am using right now (pine)? Or the SSH client that I have running? Some sort of optical illusion on my monitor perhaps? I have tried closed source clients for both, but never found any as good. There are many other examples, but those happen to be two that I can see at this moment in front of me, which demonstrates that you dont know what you are talking about. Perhaps you are only familiar with Microsoft Windows, on which there are very few open souce programs.

On the other hand, server apps are the one place that OSS has shown some potential, so it clearly is not a complete failure.

Any fool can see that OSS is actually a complete sucess server-side, so again you are distorting reality.

But something tells me that it's going to take a few years for the blind idealism to fall from your eyes. Good luck to you.

If you wish me good luck, then wish that I always remain an idealist. The world may not be everything that it should be, but if we give up and stop dreaming, as you have, how can we ever hope to mould the world to fit those dreams?

Do you really think the world would be a better place if no one was paid to develop software, art, science, literature, or music?

Yes. I cannot think of a single breakthrough in science, art or literature that was motivated by financial gain.

It sounds to me like what you really mean is, "the world would be a better place FOR ME if all software were free."

Indeed it would be a better place for me. And what is good for me is also good for you and everyone else. If your personal good is not the same as the global good, it probably means what you consider to be good is, in fact, bad.

Someday, you probably will make something valuable and useful. And some other jerk like you will steal it. You'll think it's unjust, but you still won't see the irony.

Yes, I probably will make something useful. But it will be a piece of code, an idea, and therefore quite impossible for anyone to 'steal' from me. If a million people all copied it, i would still have it, and therefore i would have lost nothing. That is the difference between 'intelectual property' and real property. It is one of the most important differences in the world today, yet it is one that most people still fail to grasp.
