That sounds like JMS taking about series 4 *after* it was written. It doesn't show whether it was originally planned that way, or whether there were other considerations affecting what he wrote (i.e. the very real possibility of not getting a fifth season).

I thought I read an interview which said that was not the *original* plan at all... But assuming i am wrong, and you are right, how do you explain why series 5 was so much worse than all the others? Here in the UK it got to be so rubbish that they moved it from a prime-time slot to 2am in the morning (presumably because no-one was watching it anymore).

The reason it was so crap after the Shadow War ended was that the war was originally supposed to run until the end of series 5. However, they thought they were being axed at the end of series 4, so they did the conclusion of the war in series 4. Then when they got another series, they had no plot left to fill it.

I remember reading, back when B5 started, that all the episodes were actually filmed in widescreen and would be available eventually on DVD, in widescreen, with extra scenes. Did this ever happen?

I'm not exactly a 'philosopher' either, but it seems quite obvious to me that Searle's analogy is incorrect. He is implying that the 'man in the box' is equivalent to a human mind, when in fact it is the entire system, including the box, the instruction manual, and the man, that are equivalent to the mind. The man inside may not understand Chinese, but the system does.
