Games should be about the journey, -not- the ending. If a bad ending can ruin the entire game for you, then you're playing them wrong.

Personally, I prefer games that have an 'ending' but then allow you to continue playing anyhow. End of the storyline shouldn't mean end of my playtime. Fallout3 made this mistake, then fixed it with some DLC. There were a -lot- of complaints about the game ending after the final quest.

For me, I can tell you what happened to Second Life. They screwed up my account and their customer service is useless.

Long version: I had an OLD account that received the 500 L$ weekly allowance that used to be given to every account. Then they changed it so that new accounts don't get that allowance. I went on, made a few custom objects and was happen with my character... Until they got hacked. When they get hacked, they force everyone to change their passwords using the password retrieval system. No problem, it's an email that gives you a link. Everything was fine... And then they got hacked again. This time, my password link doesn't work... It just says there was 'an error'. After trying like 5 times over a couple days, I call them. Their machine hangs up on me without ANY voice prompt. Over the next 6 months to a year, I called over and over, but each time it hung up on me, or answered then hung up, or answered and told me to leave a message then told me the mailbox was full... One time it DID let me leave a message and their message promised me they'd contact me... Nothing. So I eventually just gave up. It's not worth the hassle, and I'm NOT going to make a new account and lose my allowance and the customizations to my character.

I've been told that the customer service is better now, but I no longer care.

I looked into writing a platform for Facebook games and decided that it was just too bloody easy to use something like the Zend framework with a little extra code on top and write a game that way. Writing an entire framework for Facebook games would be rather pointless, unless you marketed it to the 'wish they could program but can't' crowd, and then it would be really lame.
I notice they say MySpace and Twitter as well, and that would make the framework tougher and a little more useful... But still not enough that I'd bother.

So to answer your question, I suspect they have discovered that the amount of money available as a 'public' framework is nearly zero, and therefore selling it to another company would be a lot more profitable automatically.

I actually wrote most of a very simple MafiaWars-style FB game just to experiment with how hard it was. It took me about 20-30 hours, including the time to research how to integrate with FB and learn something about Zend Framework that I didn't know yet, like authentication another 10 hours would have seen a working game, but I decided I didn't want a boring game, so I'm designing an interesting one and will put my time towards that instead, not that I have the basics clear.
