Exactly! Net Neutrality is nonsense! If those rules are again re-imposed, than certain bundles like your cell phone provider giving you free Hulu or free Netflix disappears overnight.
The fear here is that the small blog will get speed throttled and won't be able to compete with larger entities like the N.Y. Times. That, again, is bunk! The Free Market (i.e. all "netizens") would revolt if that happened! The same with your ISP throttling your speed. The outcry would be so great that the ISP would have to un-throttle their service. Again, this is why we don't need Net Neutrality: The Free Market is *MUCH* better at policing ISPs, and the 'net in general than the Federal Government could ever be!
I look at Net Neutrality as I do with most regulations: Control! And the Democrats (read: Commucrats!) LOVE to control everything!
First of all, Nazi (translated to English) meant "National Socialists Party". How you make the jump from "Nazi" to "Republican", who by definition are NOT socialists, is beyond me!
Second, Nazis were ruthless...they killed people because they belonged to a certain religion (Jews) as well as political prisoners and the infirmed. I have yet to see a Republican kill anyone who belongs to ANY group, especially these groups.
So, by definition, your comparison is not only flawed, it's completely unreasonable. I get that you don't like Republicans (why, I don't know), but to compare them to Nazis is extreme in itself!
Hate Speech" is not really a thing. It's speech that someone does not like or agree with. That happens everyday.
I served in the U.S. Army 30+ years ago and part of the reason that I served was so that EVERYONE would have the clear unadulterated right to say what they think, even if it is reprehensible. That's liberty, folks! That's real freedom!
I say free speech for all, even if it hurts someone's feelings (they'll get over it!). To do anything less is to deny free speech, and that is a slippery slope that we should ALL be afraid of!
Hats off to you, Ken! I am so tired of the constant U.S. bashing by people in Europe who've had to be rescued by the U.S. from their own TWICE last century!
PLEASE! Capitalism is the economic engine that pays for Democracy! If you don't like the company you work for or you want to make more money, start your own company and quit bitching about what someone else has. Could it *possibly* be that your "economic envy" is nothing more than coveting what someone else has?! I tire of continutally hearing socialists, communists and anarchists bitching about the state of things, yet enjoying the highest standard of living in the world! Evne the poor in the U.S. are richer than 98% of the rest of the world!
So instead of complaining about what someone has or doesn't have, why don't you do something novel, like EMULATE them so that you can add to the productivity of the country and at the same time, increase your own take. Business people should be emulated, not demonized!
I'm saying that the manufacturers and the marketers have taken advantage of a bad situation...that a drive of any size isn't really the size that's advertised on it. Yet they are permitted to let this go on. It's the equivalent of gasoline pricing (just try and get that 1/10 of a cent in change!), and CRT/LCD screen sizing (measuring diagonally). These sorts of things are misleading but people are so lazy and apathetic that these manufacturers and marketers continue to do this.
Personally as a trained computer professional, I don't expect people to calculate or think in base 2. However, consumer protection laws should have done away with this sort of nonsense a long time ago. If the package says 4 Gigabytes, it darn well should be reported by the machine as 4 Gigabytes when it's used in the machine!
As far as a byte not being 8 bits, well, it's been that way for the last 30 years...as long as personal computers have been on the market! It would seem to me that the 8-bit standard IS inherently base 2 precisely because 8 is 2^3.
Oh, and by the way, Wikipedia, though convenient, isn't a credible source of information because it can be modified by anyone...just ask any college student doing an assignment for their professor.
We're talking about BYTES here and that is inherently base 2...8 bits = 1 byte. It isn't 10 bits = 1 byte. So when you're talking larger size units, we should be using base 2 not base 10. It's simply a way for manufacturers and marketing people (definitely not the smartest people in the world!) to "get by" instead of doing the right thing.
A great example of this is when you buy a new SD Card for your machine. The machine will report the TRUE amount of space you have on that SD Card, whereas the manufacturing and marketing people inflate it because "well, we're using base 10 instead of what the computer uses". Seems stupid to me...where are you going to use that SD Card, in a human? NO! You're going to use it in a computer, therefore, you should be adhering to the computer's definition of a Gigabyte instead of the manufacturer/marketer's.
I would say that the "secret" to our marriage is having Christ at the center of it. During year seven, we almost split up and got a divorce. It was that year that we decided to get right with God and go to church. It is my firm belief that saved our marriage. Why? Because the teachings of Christ very much apply to marriage but one in particular: Selfless service.
If you want your marriage to work, you have to think of it not as a dominating man vs a submissive woman. No no no! It's more like a partnership where the both of you are back-to-back, each looking out for the other's back. You don't worry about your needs...she does that for you. She doesn't worry about her needs...you do that for her. You find ways to serve her and she finds ways to serve you! THIS is what a long-lasting and fulfilling marriage is all about!
To do this, you have to completely trust each other and communicate what you like. As the years go by, you'll KNOW what she likes and she will of you as well. The minute you start worrying about your own needs, you're on the path to divorce!
I would also counsel you to wipe the thought of other women out of your mind! You can't serve her and mess around on her at the same time! It's simply not possible. If you see a sexy woman, just don't say anything. Why? Because it's not of service to her...you'll only make her feel insecure and unloved. That's not serving her needs.
I don't know if you're a church-going person or even a Christian. However, this principle will definitely help you keep your marriage strong throughout the years. I would also advise you to consider reading some Christian literature on marriage so you get a better idea of the principles that make marriage work, even if you're not a Christian. Wisdom is wisdom, regardless of where it comes from!
I wish you and your new bride a long and prosperous life together!
I think that your Boss is referring to a copper patch cable that is able to carry 10Gbps data. I worked at Dell in their networking department two years ago and we had some of these cables. They ARE virtually impossible to make on your own. The eight wires inside the connector are so tightly cut, you'd almost never be able to cut the wires that short insert them into the connector, crimp it and have the cable carry 10Gbps.
As for regular patch cables that carry 1Gbps and lower, that's not an issue. We used regular patch cables that I personally made and they worked fine. How do I know? We were testing prototype NICs and we had to measure the performance of those cards. The patch cables were tested with an ordinary tester to insure that they worked and those cables were used with the prototype NICs.
I think that the real news here is that M$ has researchers working for it! Heck, I thought that they just bought the good ideas and put the M$ name on it. Huh. Whoduv thunk?!
t sounds to me like you're more afraid of capitalism and the monopolies that are created because of it. Monopolies aren't necessarily a bad thing, it's only when that monopoly power is used simply to preserve the monopoly, as in the case of Microsoft (M$).
Microsoft is faultering as evidenced by Windows Vista, M$ Office and their attempt to purchase Yahoo! Linux, in all it's various flavors, as well as amazing open source apps like Firefox and Thunderbird have made this possible! Wine has also contributed to this as well.
For me, I run Kubuntu 8.04, VMWare Server and Wine for Windows apps. My laptop is dual-booted so that I can play Windows games. Now, I don't care if the code in Linux is free or closed as long as it works, works better than Windows and doesn't force me to marry the provider like Apple or M$.
Further, open source is great IF you can read and understand the C++ code that it's written in. I'm not a C++ programmer, so that does me, and millions like me, absolutely no good. I still rely on those wonderful open source programmers to do their coding magic to provide the apps that I hold so dear.
So, while I understand your fears, I believe that they are misplaced as the current landscape would not allow another M$ to occur...at least without a fight!
Yes! Exactly! I bought a Compaq SR5130NX for my wife this summer and it came pre-installed with Windows Vista (I've since dubbed it Pista, as it's like pissing against the wind!) Premium. I've never seen such a piece of crap in all my life!
The machine sports an x2 64-bit processor, 1GB of memory and a 200GB HDD. However Pista couldn't get out of it's own way. Copying 23MB of pictures from an SD card to a CD-R took almost an hour, it would routinely stop working for about 20 minutes and then come back like nothing happened, and it would freeze all the time in different games, many of which were for XP/V(P)ista.
My wife told me repeatedly that she hated it, so this past weekend, I grabbed the old copy of Windows XP Pro (I bought it as student software) from her failed laptop. Amazingly, Windows XP Pro didn't require me to buy another copy, but I've seen on the net where others have had to do just that.
What I did have to do was contact Compaq and get the drivers for XP, not all of which worked. I was forced to do what many who are familiar with Linux do...look on the net for drivers for specific hardware. Thankfully, nVidia did most of the I/O and Video for this machine, so I got all of the drivers I needed.
But, I now have this copy of Windows Pista Premium that I can't use (I did back the crap up to 2 DVDs, just in case) but essentially paid for. M$ wins again! I've made a decision that future computer purchases will be home-built machines, or barebones units (including laptops) just so that I won't have to deal with a manufacturer like Compaq screwing me with M$ software that doesn't work.
At least now, my wife can play her computer games (Nancy Drew, Agatha Christy, I Spy and the like) without the stupid thing freezing up or going to lunch on her.
Let's not forget that we had a sitting President not too long ago that lied under oath and obstructed justice (and these are DOCUMENTED FACTS!), and NOTHING happened to him! NOTHING! So, why are we so upset that someone close to a sitting President did the same thing? The precedent had already been set about 10 years ago by our then sitting President!
And don't give me this "well, that was just about sex" schtick. If it's wrong, it's wrong regardless WHY it happened!
Personally, I'd like to cordially invite Ballmer and Company to perform a physical impossibility on themselves! Further, I'll NEVER buy another copy of Windows or Office as long as I live, and I'm only 41.
Why is it that if you watch Fox News that you're politically unsophisticated or that you have a personal agenda that flies in the face of common sense? I like Fox News because it offers a point of view from the conservative side rather than the Chris Matthews Liberal side that all of the other news outlets seem to have. Fox News has it's liberal content as well, but overall, it's fairly conservative. If you believe in fairness, then it IS fair that Fox News is out there to balance the overwhelming liberal bias in the overall media.
Revelation: I am a conservative, so Fox News naturally appeals to me, but don't think that I'm a "straw man". In the last midterm elections I voted primarily Libertarian because the Republicans weren't conservative enough for my taste. I absolutely won't vote for a Democrat because I firmly believe that they propagate divisiveness and do everything that they can to destroy traditional conservative values.
Further, I'm a Christian and I cannot vote for people that support the killing of innocent babies (abortion). Contrary to popular belief, Christianity is supposed to change you and influence things like how you vote and I try the best that I can to live my faith.
I also hold a Master's Degree (MBA), so if you think that conservatives are uneducated, think again!
I'm not going to upgrade to Vista for a couple of reasons. One, I'm not buying a blazingly fast laptop just so I can run more M$ bloatware. Second and more importantly, when M$ came out with the free upgrade to 64-bit XP, I applied for it, but the web site would not allow me to download it. Both my laptop and my wife's are 64-bit and I wanted the 64-bit OS. However, when I called M$, they stated that "laptops are not on the list for free upgrades", so I lost out. It was at that point that I promised myself and told my wife that XP would be the *LAST* M$ product I would buy.
We both have XP Pro and I'm installing Kubuntu Linux on hers with VMWare and I'm going to run XP Pro under it. I'm hoping that one day, I can completely dump XP and just use Kubuntu, but for games and finances (Quicken), we use XP. If companies started releasing Linux versions of their products, I'd buy it in a second. I'm so sick of being tied to DimWoes, it simply not funny!
So, do I have a grudge against M$? You're damn right I do! I've bought both copies and they are completely legal (I don't steal), but I look forward to the day when Linux is a real contender to DimWoes. Ubuntu/Kubuntu are coming damn close now, and I suspect that Macs are not far off, either, though I've not messed with one in years. I fully endorse the Mono and WINE projects and expect that M$ will move against both of these projects down the road.
M$ has the absolute right to do whatever they want with their OS, but I also have the absolute right to use something else, and as much as possible, it's Linux for me, baby!
Also, don't expect that businesses, especially small businesses will want to buy Vista anytime soon. The benefits are few and the cost is really high! These tactics by M$ may spur on more adoption of Linux/Macs in the workplace. I welcome M$'s stupidity!

I just completed my MBA with a concentration in Information Systems Management (graduated with distinction: 3.87 GPA) and my Undergrad degree is in Computer Information Systems (Both through DeVry University). I'm 40 years old, looking for employment, but unwilling to run around the country for a job. I live in the Austin, TX Metro area and intend to stay here.
Further, I've been around the block several times and with an MBA, I simply won't take bullshit anymore! I fully expect to be paid well and treated well and in return I'll give an honest day's work. I've already had a recruiter try to get me to work for much less than I believe I'm worth and I told him to go fly a kite!
Simply stated, sometimes, you've got to stick up for yourself because, as I've found out, no one else is going to.
I totally agree. I still have my Amiga 2000 and it still works. It should also be noted that Amiga was 32-bit (Motorola 68000 processor) back when the IBM/PC's were 8-bit and it had the capability to run something called a "bridgeboard" inside the Amiga that allowed you to have a PC-XT/AT on a card depending on the card that you bought. Mine still has it's 2088 Bridgeboard and it still works!
Further, the preemptive multitasking was amazing! I demonstrated it at DeVry back in the 90's when Windows was at 3.1. I was able to format 3 disk drives, 2 of them as Amiga, 1 of them as an IBM drive and play music all at the same time.
Sadly, although mine works, I don't have any monitor that can handle the output from the video port and hardware for these machines is near impossible to find and when you do, it's really expensive! Someday, I'm going to upgrade the thing to a motorola 68060 processor and get a video adapter that will allow it to be seen on my Color Monitor for the rest of my PC's. In spite of it's age, I still love that old machine. I don't think I'll ever give it up, even when it ceases working!
Lastly, the OS was a watered-down version of unix and has helped me move to the linux world more easily.

I spend, unfortunately a large amount of my time in DimWoes because of school, however, I have gotten Broadcom Wireless to work with the ndiswrapper and it seems to work very well. You should check the Ubuntu forums for specifics: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=31926

For me, this totally does not matter. M$ pissed me off when I tried to upgrade my Windows XP Professional to Windows XP 64-bit. They were allowing you to exchange your Professional 32-bit version for the 64-bit version for awhile. Being that my wife and I both have laptops with an AMD-64 chip, I decided to get the 64-bit version of XP.
However, when I called them after having trouble with their website, they told me that notebook computers were "not on the list" to be "upgraded" to 64-bit. So, the deadline passed, I didn't get my 64-bit version of Windows and I told my wife that she had better learn to love XP Professional because I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER M$ PRODUCT AGAIN!
This machine is dual booted with XP Pro and Kubuntu 64-bit. After I'm done with my MBA (I need DimWoes for school), I plan on investigating WINE under a 32-bit environment to get my games and Quicken 2005 running under it. Once I'm successful, I'll wipe my XP Pro install and be completely M$ free!
So as far as I'm concerned, Vista is a non-issue for me and my household. Long live the Penguin!
I dual boot my notebook with both DimWoes XP Professional and Kubuntu 64-bit Edition. Under Kubuntu, I use the ndiswrapper package for wlan support and the install was amazingly straight forward, didn't require ANY compiling or reconfiguring of the kernel, only finding the 64-bit Windows driver, which I have if you need it. Added benefit: the wireless light on my Compaq Presario R3000 notebook blinks under ndiswrapper when it's being accessed. Under DimWoes, it just stays on all the time. I like the behavior under ndiswrapper better. It lets you know when data is actually being transmitted/received.
Anyway, here's the instructions that I followed that got me up and running in about 1/2 hour: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=31926
Hope that helps.

Kalecomm
Amen, Pastor. I'm a Christian believer and have always believed that God created everything, including the science that makes everything run. Just because we as humans "discover" something, does not mean that we can definitively prove that God does not exist.
I'm reminded of something that Morton Downey Jr. once said on his old late-night TV show: "If I believe that there is a God and there isn't, then I've just wasted some time. However, if I don't believe there is a God and there is, then I'm in big trouble!" To that I say, Amen!
Ha Ha Ha HaHa HA! Man! That's funny! Yeah. Compare a modern day distro of Linux to ancient versions of Windows. Which, by the way, are no longer supported or being patched. Ha Ha Ha! And then, make a big fuss about how you got M$ DimWoes version Godknowswhat to work on ancient hardware, but the newer distro of Linux doesn't! Oh yeah, this is real NEWS! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Haw!
The real funny part of this is that I have Debian Linux 3.1 (2.6 kernel) running right now upstairs on a 233MHz AMD box with 128MB of memory as a server (no gui) and it runs OK. Not the speediest thing in the world, but OK. Acceptable. Try running XP on something like that, and you'll grow old or end up pulling what's left of your hair out!
Besides, older versions of Linux would probably run rings around whatever version of DimWoes that M$ claims to outperform Linux. Yeah. Let's see Windblows 95 outperform RedHat 6.0. Yeah. Good luck with that!

Personally, I'd like to cordially invite Ballmer and Company to perform a physical impossibility on themselves! Further, I'll NEVER buy another copy of Windows or Office as long as I live, and I'm only 41.
Long live FOSS, Long Live (Kubuntu) Linux!

Best Regards, Kalecomm
Amen!

Best Regards, Kalecomm
I spend, unfortunately a large amount of my time in DimWoes because of school, however, I have gotten Broadcom Wireless to work with the ndiswrapper and it seems to work very well. You should check the Ubuntu forums for specifics: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=31926 Best Regards, Kalecomm

Anyway, here's the instructions that I followed that got me up and running in about 1/2 hour: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=31926 Hope that helps. Best Regards, Kalecomm
