Genious. I completely agree with these statements. Seriously, everything, EVERYTHING has a dark side, no matter how positive. Not to simply rehash what was just said, but seriously, before jumping on the bandwagon to make your extra 15 bucks a month crunching some billionaires code, take those resources and put it to some good use.
I am sorry, but this is true, yet hypocritical. Really, when W2K was announced, and of course had what, 65K errors, every Linux Zealot from here to Timbuktu jumped on the "Oh my god, the amount M$ bugs are astronomical, W2K must suck, etc". So really, not you per se, but whats the difference to the average/. flamer? None. Its just because its from the other side of the fence that it matters and that this Fred dude is so wrong, etc.
I am sorry, but the concept of this is awesome. Sure its not original, but if someone did take the time to make generic (or not so) processing boards for the masses, they will come. Tie these in to things like ProcessTree, and we can really take advantage of this power.
Thank you for pointing this out, open vs non is a good battleground for many ideals, but there are MUCH more important battles to fight in software I believe, this being one of them.
One way or the other, either in tuition, technology fees, or hell indirectly through government fund which are fuled by taxes. This includes hardware and software, and internet access. Name one privately funded university?
See you dis him for pointing out MS controlling the API, but then applaud ID for doing the same thing, just through a different means. So essentially you have rendered most of your argument nihl.
Why is that, even if it is market pressure from AMD, that Intel's choice to open source its specs is need for another stupid comment from the Slashdot editors? Can you all please report the news, and nothing more. Really your personal opinions were fine back in the day, but this is a news site for the users, not your personal stomping ground. I could be wrong, and there are alternatives that I read everyday. But while Slashdot is king of the hill, you could at least try to maintain your user base and be slightly more professional.
I hate to sound so obvious, but just in case some people do not see it coming...
With the advent of smaller and faster processors, and more manufactures able to make x86 and other standard CPU's, there will be a plague of non-legit hardware in the coming years. The world economoy is going to make it harder also to pinpoint who is responisble and where. Why? Because with as much as electronics are passed from here to there, it is very easy to interrupt the supply chain, especially on the local levels.
I am not knocking mom and pop corner computer joints, but its easier to pass off hot CPU's. or just jacked up ones, then it would be to say UPS.
I disagree with this post. Do you really think Yale and the other schools are really cracking down on users of Napster, I highly doubt it. I challenge the RIAA, you, or anyone to proved these school are Napster free. I gaurantee you they are not. I am a student at the University of Kentucky, and students here run everything under the sun, regardless of "policy", because we all know most sysadm, while maybe clean at school, have most of the large warez collections. You think they are going to crack down on studetns, I think not.
From the article: Andre Young, aka Dr. Dre, previously sent Napster a letter asking the company to remove his songs from its lists. Napster's software allows users to view and swap digital songs that are stored on other users' hard drives. "Their only response was (to say that) the songs aren't on their servers, and if (Young) will send a letter under penalty of perjury identifying specific songs and users that they would restrict those users," King said. "That was not a satisfactory response. That was a comical response." Its funny that while they think they can sue individual users, that its not so funny that when propsosed to talk to each one, they say Napster is crazy. Att. King (w/ Dre and Metallica) are going to lose a lot of fans over this issue, and will not win in the end. This is as frivilous as censoring the internet, to some its possible in their mind, but we all know its not going to happen. Ever.
Besides, lets see anyone take 15 dollars and make even one song that from a production point of view sound remotely as good as any normal band does. It is never done. I would rather spend 15 bucks a CD then 200,000 making one.
Why not set up a SlashFund, and have it invest in high tech/open source properties, to raise even more money, and donate it back to the community by helping smaller projects?
Some people need to realize the sheer brutality the human body goes through during programming ANYTHING, not just large games. Carmack kicks ass at what he does, and should be commended for it, not dissed because he used big words. Not to say its a bad article, but really, a great movement that needs to happen is education in this country, especially in the geek community. Sure many people know a little about lots of things, but we all need more focus, including me.
I disagree. Your argument points out a physical difference. You know I am NOT talking about that. I am referring to intellectual and social capability. When was the last time you woke up and thought to yourself, oh yeah, no women is as capable as me, so I can rest easy. I bet you never have. I don't mean to be forced into playing devil's advocate here, but don't defend the other side of an argument that I am not making.
You have to remember, that the specs on the XBOX are bound to change, as the 8GB HDD is only an estimate simply because this is the size they can afford to package fairly cheaply. I would surely assume that if they can add better components in the up coming round of the console war, they will. Not that there is any historical evidence to back this up, rather, just look at this level of technology compared to years past. They will have to just to survive. I don't see too many people in Japan with a PS2 that do not already have a computer, and I am sure it will be the same here. Ethernet and an IP would surely make or break a next gen system market, so they could network with their home computer and use it for storage.
This seems very much like the intellectual property rights of software programmers being broke by pirates, only in reverse. People should have every right to buy and sell virtual goods. Its like an ISP liek, oh I don't know, @home, which sells you a service and SHOULD deliver (but doesn't). Its only a virtual service to them, they route requested electrical pulses to me. Same for eBay Evercrack players. This is a very bad move being initiated by Sony, and they will pay for it in the long run. Whats the difference if I have some flaming nuclear sword that I bought of found? It doesn't effect the balance of the game because the person who I bought it off of could have simply used it themselves, and probably did.
What can one say about the man? I have never met him, but since I first got Populous for the Sega Genesis, I haven't forgot it. I spent more time on that game then I care to remember, as apparently many other posters have as well. Its admarable that he gives credit where its due in terms of Black & White dev in comparison to say Tamagatchi.
I don't mean to go against the grain here, but 128 kb encoding at 44Hz sounds fine for me, just as good as any CD out there, minus maybe Ultradisc. So I would prefer to see those DVD discs filled will 40000 128/44 songs instead of 10000 512/44 songs.......my ear is very picky, but past 128, unless you have monster speakers, its hard to see the difference on properly encoded mp3s.
Um, no its not. Why is reading the posts hypocritical? I simply like to be able to defend my argument. If the enemy leaves intelligence to help your cause, do you ignore, I think not.
Alright, first off, look Jon Katz has to point out the horribly obvious, again. The I look at some of the post, and I knew I would find one female right off the bat who would complain about being called a chick. Can Slashdot become anymore stereotypical? I thought this was about news, not some pseudo-sexual affirmative action lameness coverage. Women have as much ability as men do, for everything. Sure somethings my be better suited to one or the other sex...but lets be realistic here. How about some more tech news?
"merger is that it will stifle development of innovative, non-mainstream Web sites" Please, you seem to think that these mega-mergers really effect you, don't you. Granted it will in some ultra-minor respect, and that isn't where it is considered a problem. But rather when that little effect is felt by millions of people. This merger will in NO WAY effect the creativity of those freelancers, so why even say it will stifle their development. Get a life. I all for anarchy (well well thought out at least anarchy), but this stupid propoganda you guys spread sometimes is ridiculous. I don't think this merger is good by any means, but this one statement to me ruins your entire argument.
I don't understand, since Public Enemy, what has Chuck D that influences your life? Really? I mean many MANY people have opinions, so why keep focusing on him, even stating he is essentially a major player in the music industry, give me a break.
This is just an instance where obviously during the development phase, someone didn't take the necassary steps in order to avoid this situation. Granted, there is always a way around everything, but with a system as open as this, they should have taken better steps initially. Still an excellent product!

Actually they are opening the platform up, check out Gameunit or EETimes.

In the USA, a company can NOT be sued into bankruptcy. Thought i would share......
