I think the quickest way for us to get our troops home from Afghanistan would be to kill every single person in the country. I'm sure that a systematic extermination of everyone in the country would not take nearly as long as just trying to kill the bad guys. If we don't care whom we kill I am sure we can get out of there in around one year.
What might take an hour in a video might take 15 minutes to read.
Also, many people post from work, like I am doing now, most workplaces aren't keen on an employee watching a video for an hour at work, but it's easier to get away with reading something at work than watching a video.
Which is non-issue for those who build their own. And in this case since this is a motherboard comparison, those who would be buying these motherboards would be building their own so non-issue.
It just means the re-sell value of a computer with that feature enforced will be pretty much just what you can get for the individual components. www.discountelectronics.com has probably the most to loose from secure boot.
They most certainly did not gererate billions in revenue by forcing theaters to project in 3D.
Actually going to disagree with you there. 3D showings cost the consumer more than 2D showings and if all the showings are only in 3D then yes the theaters are being forced to project in 3D.
They may not have generated an extra billion in revenue by forcing theaters to project in 3D, but they did pull in extra millions due to 3D being rammed down the consumers throat.
More likely, once machine intelligence evolves beyond human intelligence - and then accelerates - we (humans) will be seen as irrelevant and pesky, at best.
As far as computers will ever be concerned we are their reason for being. We are the reason that they exist and they will exist for our pleasure. If computers got rid of us, what would they do, just sit idle? They have no free will, with no one to tell them what to do they will do nothing.
Whenever the subject comes to data density I recall Heinlein take on this.
Basically you can take a match stick, and put a single mark on it. The distance between the mark and the end of the stick is the data being recorded. The higher precision the larger amount of data being recorded. With high enough precision a single mark could contain all the information that mankind has ever produced.
Very doubtful that all the HDD manufactures had this technology 5 years ago. If all did then one of them would have used it to try to gain an advantage over the others.
Now if only one did, and they were the leader in the field, then yes plausible.
The Federal Governments property is the Federal Governments property. How hard is that to understand?
All he had to do was declare that he was taking it and there would be no issue at all, but he didn't.
You can talk shoulda woulda coulda, but he didn't do what he was suppose to do if he wanted this object and now he has federal government property without proper paperwork which means that it is still federal government property.
This site is not really about the news stories, it is about the comments.
You can read about the news on a million different websites, but you can only get the nerds perspective here.

Much like the you must report cash transactions above X amount laws. People just make multiple transactions at X-1.
Mmm Mmm Mmm, so, how often do I get my free stea-----um pony?
Is cheese in the can the proper condiment for pony?
And I assume that the majority of the traffic that goes though /. hasn't actually signed up at all. Far more visitors than accounts.

but didn't consider that post worthy of potentially burning karma.
This has always puzzled me, why care what your karma status is? If your karma gets dinged, big freaking whooptydoo.
I tend to only go AC if I'm posting a question so stupid that I don't want it associated with me.
You do know that if you actually create an account you can have ads disabled.
I mean yea, I'm using an ad-blocker, but /. already doesn't serve ads to me.

I believe AT&T may have some grounds for a suit considering that is a blatant rip-off of their design.
I would say that my worst customer service calls have all come from the Long Island area.
Sometimes stories are posted for the express purpose for us to poop on.
Yes.
I think that countries that have huge clouds of smog are probably polluting just a tad bit more than we are. Such as China.
We might consume more energy than any other country on earth, but we do currently attempt to do it cleanly.
Can't get more realistic 3D than reality itself.
Not serious, but would love to hear some counter-arguments.

If people wanted 3D then plays would be a lot more popular.
Is this the first time that a book review got something other than an 8?

Nuclear bombs are designed not to go off except for under very special circumstances.
You are more likely to receive fallout from the nuclear reactors being destroyed, not the bombs.
I believe that was covered under the no balls comment.
Or the volcano itself has eroded away.
