Because now they have a little market share. Because now many Chinese know and use their service (I have friends in China that do). This gives them traction, power. Maybe their plan all along was to enter China and after lots of people start using it, everyone discovers how good the Google search is, and how the company tries to do no evil, play a game with the government. The PRC government knows a lot of people use Google, and those people might get mad if the government blocks it. If it's blocked now, it would be an in-your-face insult to the Chinese people. Not only would it be painfully obvious to all of them, and grow resentment at home, but it would be very public internationally. I don't think the PRC can afford to block them.
Here is the scenario, it's a bit like a game of chicken. One day, Google decides it has enough traction and stops censoring, just like that (this includes the Google cache). The ball is in the PRC's court.
1. The government blocks Google. Tons of Chinese get mad at the government. Every other country in the world gets mad at PRC government. Government is in big trouble. The PRC has been very careful to not have catastrophic events like this display their tyranny so obviously (minus a few) so they will avoid this.
2. The government doesn't block Google. Google wins. Human rights wins. The PRC government lives another day, but China reforms will happen faster and more often and Chinese will have the human rights they should have sooner than if Google didn't try this.
Isn't there a ton of "dark fiber" that isn't being used? (in the US at least) They really don't have much of an argument. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_fiber
yeah come on, what do you want people? So it's not paper thin yet (wait for the OLEDs), but if you really want something smaller than an LCD, do you want smaller screen size too? I don't get it.
This would have been great for the mortgage company I worked for. A lot of what we did in our cube farm was server/terminal stuff for updating mortgage info in the main database etc. We had fully functional Dell PCs that we didn't really need. I don't think the 1600x1200 would be a problem there since most people used 800x600 I think, LOL. It would have saved the company a ton probably. Thank god I don't work there anymore.
Yeah but they make money when you BUY AND INSTALL Windows. Calc, MSPaint, Notepad are part of Windows, and you are paying for them. Too bad.
Well they could include an MSN search in Notepad, or a Google search, or a little advertisement space or some other adware. It's not like it couldn't happen. Perhaps there has already been a Notepad-like program that did this and was run out of business.
I know Ulead's Gif Animator image editing program had a small square advertisement window that wouldn't go away until you registered the program. That's close enough to MSPaint to have an argument there.
What if MS decides to make MSPaint a more featured program? How far can they go before they run into trouble from people screaming Monopoly!! Is there somewhere to draw the line between programs that should be included in the OS and programs that maybe are but have competitors who are being shut out by a monopoly?
If a program like the Gimp was included with Windows, I think I'd use it.. especially since I use it now.
you know what, it pisses me off that Windows comes pre-installed with MICROSOFT's CALCULATOR!!! I believe they are unfairly using their monopoly power to stifle the market for software calculators.
Also, what is up with NOTEPAD!!! Man, Microsoft is including all these things with the operating system that have corresponding programs that are made by other people, thereby squashing the competition.
MICROSOFT PAINT!!! They COMPLETELY DESTROYED the light image editor market by INCLUDING MS Paint in Windows!!!!
I would much rather hunt for, pick, and download all of these programs that normally one expects to have on their computer (read: expect to be included in the OS) separately so I can spend weeks before I have a satisfactorily functional computer. (sarcasm)
Now when Joe Schmo goes to Walmart and picks up a cheapo computer, browsing the web is one of the things he wants to do. MS has to be paid to allow AOL files on it's OS right? that stupid internet services folder? Well if FF wants to come preinstalled with Windows they are going to have to pay MS, or pay Dell to install it secondarily. Also if Google wants to make their search default to IE, they have to pay. Alternatively they can promote themselves in other ways such as being the default search for FF and promoting FF which they are doing.
well I've had FF crash a few times. It's nothing drastic or enough to make me stop using it. I doubt a windows update had anything to do with firefox. I have Opera, IE, and Firefox working on my comps also. I use Firefox mainly on one, and use both IE and Opera on the other. I had used mostly IE until recently.
diffy Q?? it must not be the same one I took. Suck it Fourier and Wronsky if that is a dude.
hehe, got a B-
it was a very difficult class so I'm ok with that. We didn't just do similar problems, we were expected to understand it enough to figure new things out on tests.
That really annoys me that some people can take programming of any kind in high school. When I got to college, in my first CS class, 3/4 or more of the kids had been programming already. A lot were from Chicago so I guess they had it in schools there. Well I did fine, but it would have been easier if we had something in high school. That was really my first exposure to programming (I'm not counting TI-82). I suppose if I had known more, I would have done stuff on my own, but I had no idea.
BTW, I got a B- in the class even though I had a 108% going into the final. I guess so many were getting high grades that he made the final a lot harder. I thought I did ok on the final, so even with that, he must have HEAVILY curved down the grades. What an ass. He didn't teach it next semester.
you should rent season one, it's pretty damn good. It's a different kind of sci fi, gritty and real, very well done.
I watched a couple of episodes of the old BSG, aaaaahahahahaha
son of a bitch, those kinds of things really piss me off. It's the fricking white house, you'd think someone would know something about China. It's the office of the president of the USA, you're supposed to fscking represent our country to the world and you're making us all look stupid. Stop it. If I was the fricking president I would learn as much as I could about the world, foreign countries, governments, cultures. It's your job. As it is, maybe I already know more than them now since I have a friend there and I've always enjoyed geography.
uhh at the University of Illinois I know they charged different amounts for the College of Engineering than the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. That's a public school. Though they really did seem out to flunk us and there were certainly weed out classes.
I agree wholeheartedly. People don't know the difference and it is huge. The problem might be that there are even less jobs for "Computer Scientists" than for "IT" people.
What does one do with a computer science degree? None of the cool (or any) companies were hiring when I graduated and all I see are IT type job postings now. I imagine I could have actually done computer science at a company like Boeing, or hey NASA, JPL etc would be nice or really any interesting scientific and/or research field.
I'm sorry, that's bullshit. If you take a solid CS major and you don't work your ass off, you can easily flunk out. Meanwhile you can still get a decent grade while not working your ass off in an English major for example, or Business, or MIS for that matter. What year are you? Let me know when you get to Combinatorial Algorithms, Diff EQ, Numerical Methods, a serious Data Structures and Compilers classes... you know, the ones with grad students in them.
to the OP, LOL about the incorrect graphs in Econ, so true. I took Econ up to two senior level courses and they were all CAKE. I laugh thinking about how the other people had trouble with the math in those.
I don't lie unfortunately. It's definitely a handicap. I imagine that's why I'm usually not such a great interviewer.
I will however be able to claim more skills (with experience) once I get my new webapp site up.
-Webmaster experience
-webapp dev
-Apache Tomcat
-IIS
-Java
-JSP
-Servlets, EJB
-MySQL
-HTML
-experience supporting a many user environment (I hope)
-experience developing and deploying application through all steps
wish me luck.
yeah my friend in China uses the first one. http://www.google.com/intl/zh-CN/
PRC would be in a shit storm if they did anything to the Google employees.
Because now they have a little market share. Because now many Chinese know and use their service (I have friends in China that do). This gives them traction, power. Did he "clone humans" by any chance?
didn't know that.. so I looked it up: Disputed reports about the nuclear program in Konan in 1945 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_atomic_progr am

That's because all of their husbands had already taken CS or MIS at one of the big 4 year universities. I know.
