IIRC, Kirk was the only one to bring one of the original twelves starships of that class on the same mission home at all.
Picard was the only one to bring any starship of any class home at all. Dangerous? Kirk wouldn't have been able to handle the Borg! Every other ship but the Enterprise was completely destroyed.
Both Kirk and Picard lost the enterprise, though (in the subsequent movies).
I'd ask you if you were 15, but your id shows you couldn't be.
Multiply by four.
Life can't be summed up in dystopian novels.
Of course not, it was simply an illustration.
Laws exist to protect the public good, not to validate your view that you should be allowed to do anything you want, then pay for any harm you do later.
Which is why there are laws against theft and assault. I'm no "do what you want and pay later" libertarian, I simply believe in FREEDOM. If my activity doesn't harm anyone, why should I be punished for it? Your having ten beers in an hour doesn't affect me so it should be legal. But if you're one of those mean drunks that want to fight, you deserve to spend a night or two in jail. If you get in your car and drive home you should also be in jail, because you are endangering my life. But if you're a happy drunk and walk home there's no reason whatever to keep you from drinking. Alcohol prohibition to prevent DUIs and fistfights is a "Minority Report" mindset, and I don't like the paternalistic attitude at all. The libbies put the label "nanny state" on damned near everything, but in this case it fits.
The cost of meth prohibition is low and the benefit is immense.
There's your problem. The cost of meth is very high to the idiot that would do that stuff, but far lower to society than incarcerating every dumbass stupid enough to snort the shit and the resultant violence caused by its prohibition.
My grandpa's generation (he had a beermaking kit in his barn in the '20s) learned the lesson of prohibition. Too bad his generation didn't pass the info along.
Oh wait, they did.. To bad Bush Jr didn't learn what similar policies on another subject did to the economy. If you'd like to read the whole book, here is the index. That particular tome was required reading in an undergrad history class I took at SIU in the late '70s, and is a very good book (quite readable).
Thank you. How hard would it have been for the submitter to include that in the summary? What would a nerd know about client management and billing, except for writing software for it?
TemplePilot, you don't know if clonehappy is a curmudgeon and has no life, or if he just thinks your post sounds like the ramblings of an adolescent fool. You do realise that you're liable to get modded flamebait for "you're a curmudgeon & you have no life" and overrated for "Big whoop".
Yes, language evolves, but "herpy derpy" is a de-evolution, not evolution, and IS AN INSULT: "Describes a person who usually adds retarted remarks or statements to a conversation."
If you're going to call someone a fucking retard, call him a fucking retard. Intelligent people ignore people who sound like fucking retards, and guess what? Your posts sound incredibly retarded. How you speak is often as important as what you say.
I hope you have excellent karma, because you beg to be modded down. Since you have yet to have a single comment modded +5 you might want to think about your use of language before all your posts start at zero.
Well I have and I've seen pieces of shit steal copper wiring out of houses and kill dogs for fun at 3 am
Again, look up sociopathy. I've seen stone cold sober rednecks deliberately run over cats because they just hate cats. The same mechanism that makes these evil people use the drugs (and not all the drug users are stealing, see below) makes them theives.
It's been said (and the city denies it) that mine is the third most dangerous city in the US. There's a bar I frequent in the very worst part of town with a very wide variety of patrons. The bar's owner also owns a construction company, half of his bar customers are his construction employees and the rest run the gamut from business owners to state employees to the chronically unemployed. Many of these people are addicted to meth and crack, but only half of these people are sociopaths (the sociopaths usually wind up barred before too long).
Sleep depravation does cause damage to the brain, but so does alcohol. Yet I don't see alcoholics stealing copper for their next drink; it usually results in them winding up in jail for DUI.
Do you know what the very worst abusable substance there is for your brain? Toluline; paint thinner. The idiots who huff this stuff get so brain damaged that they develop speech impairmants that don't go away when they're sober. Yet toluline is legal and available at any hardware store, and so cheap that these morons don't steal for it (most of them are selling dope to get money).
RTFS, less than half of the rise is from us. If we didn't dig another well and never used groundwater to irrigate, the oceans would still be rising, just a little less than half as fast.
Two millimeters per year is tiny, IIRC the moon is moving away from the eath at a higher rate. This is such a slow rise that we will have little trouble adapting.
Most people's jobs are far more physically demanding. Hold a pretty damned heavy nail gun all day, hell even a fry cook is on his feet moving his arms around all day! factory workers, welders, machinists, folks running cash registers... gees, dude, how weak are you??
I was wondering why I stayed with Charter recently, until I realized that I had no fucking choice unless I wanted to downgrade to shitty 7 meg DSL.
Well, your circumstances may be different than mine: you may have a large family with each member using two devices and/or services at the same time, but I'm on 6 meg DSL and watch YouTube while listening to KSHE on one PC while the the notebook is torrenting Linux distros and stuff, and I never get a stutter out of any of it. If your circumstances are similar to mine, you might not have been getting 7 megs; if your phone lines are old or connections corroded, your throughput is going to be BAD. When I first got DSL the modem couldn't even talk to the ISP because of the 40 year old phone lines (which I've replaced, of course).
That'll be just for the attitude of those bastards.;-)
Sterling Ball, CEO and founder Ernie Ball's son said almost the exact same thing:
Humiliated by the experience, Ball told his IT department he wanted Microsoft products out of his business within six months. "I said, 'I don't care if we have to buy 10,000 abacuses,'" recalled Ball, who recently addressed the LinuxWorld trade show. "We won't do business with someone who treats us poorly."
Ball's IT crew settled on a potpourri of open-source software--Red Hat's version of Linux, the OpenOffice office suite, Mozilla's Web browser--plus a few proprietary applications that couldn't be duplicated by open source. Ball, whose father, Ernie, founded the company, says the transition was a breeze, and since then he's been happy to extol the virtues of open-source software to anyone who asks. He spoke with CNET News.com about his experience.
Someone should have, I agree, because those people were in fact acting against what the bible teaches, as is the evil preacher from Florida holding "God hates fags" rallies at soldiers' funerals. God loves homosexuals, he just hates what they do -- but he hates what that preacher does a lot more, and he hates what Gingrich has done FAR more than he hates homosexuality. After all, adultery is one of the Big Ten and idolatry (Gingrich's worship of power and wealth) is right at the top of the list.
The trouble with religious people is the same truoble with secularists: they're human and fallable.
Taking drugs also makes suffering easier, that doesn't mean it's a good thing.
Absolute bullshit. When my arthritis acts up I'd be an idiot not to take some naproxin or aspirin. Someone who is suicidal would be an idiot not to take the SSRI their doctor had prescribed.
Religion is like a drug, giving people morally and psychologically false solutions to real problems.
Poor blind man that you are, you refuse to believe that colors exist. What Jesus taught works. The "turn the other cheek"? I've done that several times, been punched out of my barstool, got up and continued with my beer like nothing happened, and in each incident the person who punched me felt a LOT worse the next day than they would have if I'd beaten the shit out of them, and they told me as much when profusely apologising.
Having "God forgive your transgression" is a crutch to make you feel better, instead facing the harm you caused other people when you wronged them.
Wrong. When a Christian harms another, he's required to do everything he can to right that wrong.
Having "God love you" is a crutch when you can't get love from other people.
Again, utter bullshit. If you live like Christ taught, everyone will love you (although many with think you batshit insane).
I've been to the zoo and seen the elephant. Arguing with your assertion that elephants don't exist is an excersize in futility. The only way to resolve the dispute is for you to go to the zoo.
I think the point is that the angry young libertarian males need to grow up if they are still manifesting their late adolescent rejection of paternal authority after about the age of 24.
The Libertarian fundies regard all state action as violence since, following their unacknowledged philosophical mentor, Mao Tse Tung
WTF? Shit, I've either been feeding a troll or you're clueless about history. Mao Tse Tung was about as far from a libertarian as one could possibly get.
No, I don't think FaceBook is going away, but the insane amounts of money people invested in it will -- and already have. Like pets.com, the stock wasn't worth what it was selling for.
Do you really think it's illegal because of "right-wing lies"?
SomeJoel answered your question pretty well, it's because only half of voters think pot (let alone other drugs) should be legal (up from 12% in 1968) I'll add that the War On Drugs has historically been a Republican thing. Nixon started the first War On Drugs, Carter (terrible President) pretty much ignored drugs, Reagain starte dthe WOD bullshit again and it escalated under Bush Sr.
Of course it's an opinion, just as yours is. What distinguishes my opinion from yours (or mine some 30 years ago for that matter) is simply my greater wisdom.
Yes, oh sage? Wise old wizard? Listen, grandpa, I've been smoking pot for 41 years and in my youth did a lot of dangerous shit I no longer do, too. The wise don't force their opinions of things that don't affect them personally on others in the form of law, insecure authoritarians do. The wise give council, not edicts.
I've been wearing seat belts far longer than they've been mandatory, because not wearing one is just fucking stupid. But I'm not about to take away your right to be stupid; I value freedom. Apparently you do not.
You also refuse to look at the math. The societal cost of drug illegality far outweigh the societal cost of the druggies. The Chicago gang wars and resultant bloodshed (often of innocent bystanders, often children) are a direct result of drugs' illegality. The Mexican beheadings are the result of these incredibly STUPID laws.
It simply means that what is appropriate behaviour for a 5 year old when manifested in a 50 year old will be regarded as developmental retardation.
In other words, failure to learn from your mistakes. Read a little history of the 1920s when they outlawed alcohol -- exactly the same thing we're seeing with drug prohibition. Why do you (and you're not alone by any means) refuse to learn from the mistakes of the past?
I suspect that those in favore of continued prohibition are making tons of money because of those laws.
I have, and I say you're clueless. I don't know where you got your misinformation, but you might want to do a bit of research. Hint: look for unbiased sources, preferably on a site with an.edu extension. You might also have a look at the wikipedia entry on sociopathy and psychopathy.
Meth should be illegal because 99.9% of meth users eventually start stealing or killing to support their habit.
So, you think Minority Report's precrime unit is a good thing? Stealing and killing are already against the law. "Put him in jail because he might steal or kill" is a terrible argument. I'll bet you thought 1984 had a utopian society, too.
It doesn't increase your personal safety but it increases your financial safety. When some asshole runs a red light and t-bones me, he'd damned well better have insurance, because if he doesn't, both of us will be filing for bankrupcy. I shoud not have to pay for someone else's lack of personal responsibility.
I don't know how accurate the statistic is, but on the Channel 20 news they had a special about distracted driving last week, and said that in one in four accidents, at least one involved driver was using a cell phone.
Are you kidding? How many times did Spock die? Hell, even McCoy died in one episode. Who loses more patients, McCoy or Crusher? McCoy probably lost more and NG was on the air more than twice as long as OS. Somebody (usually more than one somebody) died every damned week under Kirk.
And hey, those red shirts' mothers probably disagree with you. A good captain keeps ALL of his crew alive, not just the senior officers.
While obvious flamebait, the post does have merit in that judaism and its successor religions like christianity and islam glorify suffering as a path to God.
Well, I'm sure you've heard the expression "there are no athiests in foxholes." But "glorifying suffering" doesn't mean one should seek to suffer, rather that knowing God makes suffering a whole lot easier -- and face it, everyone suffers sometimes.
Thise who become violent are NOT close to God. I'm not sure about Islam, but making others suffer is the antithesis of what Christ taught.
Just keep in mind that the second you start talking about fucking with MY internet or MY ability to access porn (or anything else), then we're going to have a problem. And that goes whether it's a bible you're thumping, or a Koran, or the Talmud, etc. It's not our job to protect you from yourself, Sparky.
I agree with you completely. Those who would force their religious views (or lack of them) on others must not have any faith in their beliefs at all. The only person in the world you can change is yourself. If the Florida Baptists outlaw homosexuality, the Muslims might get alcohol prohibition started again, or outlaw baptismal pools.
I have the same problem with people who would outlaw drugs. Your drug use doesn't affect me at all unless your habit makes you steal from me, and theft is already illegal. Just because you have no self-control is no reason for prohibiting me from doing what you're too weak to do.

What does WHMCS stand for, anyway?
TemplePilot, you don't know if clonehappy is a curmudgeon and has no life, or if he just thinks your post sounds like the ramblings of an adolescent fool. You do realise that you're liable to get modded flamebait for "you're a curmudgeon & you have no life" and overrated for "Big whoop".
