nobody offers legal MP3 downloads of music.
Two that come to my mind are Magnatune (tagline = "We are not evil") and eMusic. Granted, much of their libraries are made up of work from artists and labels smaller than the mega-corporations that fund the RIAA lawsuits, studies, and propoganda. But there are businesses that offer legal MP3 downloads of music, and I wish them all the best.

The rest of your points, I agree with.

You don't need a Second Life to get ripped off online. I never did see the $10 million I was promised from Dr (Mrs.) Mariam Abacha, wife of the late Nigerian head of state, General Sani Abacha.
  3. Re:Should have waited on Another ATM Maker Pwned by Googling · · Score: 2, Interesting

The "patch" is a update that forces the banks to change the ATM's default password. The default password has probably been online for as long as the ATM manufacturer has had a website. And with all of the attention the previous ATM password fiasco received, I would hope that my bank has already investigated (and reduced) their vulnerabilities to this type of fraud.

The problem is not that anyone can read these service manuals for the next couple of months. The problem is that some owners of these ATMs did not read the service manuals to begin with.

And if the solution is "spreading the word", then kudos to Kevin Poulsen for assisting the banks.

  5. This is NOT crazy on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 1

Digital text also weighs less, takes up less room and is more easily searched than a stack of books. And digital text is much less likely to degrade with use than paper. Quality is arguable with respect to any digital vs analog argument. Have you picked up a book recently?

The way you use the object is different. The act of reading is not, but the experience is. The same holds true for playing a song from a record vs a mp3. It's not about snap, crackle and pop (which is not heard on clean, well kept records), but it's a different process.

It may even be more convenient to pick up a needle and put it on a record than it is to deal with encoding formats, bit rates, DRM, the widely varied interface of mp3 players, hardware capabilities of the machine used to store / play the files, and tagging the files so that they appear in your library the way you want them organized. Not to mention bugs in the media player software, as in iTunes 7.

It depends on how you want to use the object. And it's not crazy.

  6. Not a Revolution on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 1

This is niether a revolution nor revival. Independent artists (and a few on the major labels) in a variety of genres have been consistently releasing singles and albums throughout the 90's and 2000's. Turn the clock back 10 years and replace "White Stripes" with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, or Green Day. But it's a niche market. Selling 5500 copies of a White Stripes single on 7" doesn't change that.

I thought it was already determined that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of pirates since the 1800s. Since when has the tobacco industry had an anti-pirate agenda?

  10. Re:emusic is adware on Zune Won't Play Old DRM Infected Files · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think the point was that they are a legitimate distributor that "plays for sure", since they distribute mp3s without DRM. But I must question your "spy/adware" comment...

First of all, there is a difference, between spyware and adware.

Secondly, I've been using their service for almost a year and have never had adware pushed on me. Frankly, the first site's description of the adware looked like shortcuts to sign up for their services. "Desktop and start menu links"? Come on...

I'm not even sure how accurate this information is. It was last updated almost a year ago. I do have an option to uninstall the eMusic download manager. And if you're concerned about your personal information being shared you can opt out. Most people do not seem to have a problem with is, as eMusic is the second largest legitimate download service.

Also, how do they "push" these files to you? Based on the links you provided it sounds more like Winamp and other free software are bundling these shortcuts to help support their business.

I will say that I hate spyware, adware, and malware as much as the next guy, but it sounds like you're mostly spreading FUD here. I like eMusic and haven't had any problems with adware from them. Do you work for Apple?

First of all, I have no evidence to suggest that Google is not strong arming the entire French speaking population of Belgium (or at least their news services. I think it would be more reasonable, however, to consider that faced with a fine of $1 million a day, they took the most efficient route of removing the listings from Google News.

Also, IDNSF (I do not speak French), but the summary seems to suggest that the content needed to be removed from Google's "cache" as well. It may be that because of the language used, the ruling required removal of the listings from the search index as well...
