While I'm sure this is a very effective system, he doesn't need a $40,000 twelve pound laptop that can survive a two-story drop, works underwater, and can render 3D graphics in 2400x2000 resolution.

I'm pretty sure someone out there does, though. King Kong, maybe.

Back in college, I took a software engineering class where I was the only student without a laptop. I also go the highest grade in the class. The laptops were distractions. I saw people using instant messenger, playing video games, reading slashdot... (cricket, cricket). I thought it was a complete waste. They didn't offer any "educational benefit" whatsoever. I still hold that people are responsible for their own actions, and if not instant messenger or email or video games, or even slashdot, students are going to find some other way to distract themselves. Some students doodle, some students talk, some students (yes even in college) pass notes.

I have a laptop and I'm in college. Why do I use it? Mobility. Parents are facing a tough choice nowadays -- a lot of parents, as tech savvy as they might try to be, are still daunted by all the new gadgets out there. For them, the PC (or mac) is still the biggest territory they have yet to fully understand. Technology is moving as such a rapid pace that as soon as your average mother gets to understand Intel vs. Athlon, she notices "hyperthreading" and has to figure out what that means. Most parents want the best of both worlds, because most (I'm saying most here) assume that a laptop is a desktop in a smaller case. So on that thought, they're going to look at laptops to provide the portability they think their kids need, and also the power they think their kids are going to have. "Desktop replacement" is somewhat lost on many people, despite how literal it sounds.

And if the case is that they know what they're doing, most parents are still going to go with a laptop, because they're making one large investment and they want the option of portability, if their kids need it 2 years down the line. They're not looking to buy a new laptop during college, unless something happens. Laptop trumps desktop when you're looking to make one decision, and you're not sure what your kids are going to do in the future.

One of my friends is an architecture student. His parents bought him a desktop replacement, which is fine when he needs to run his software to run models and look at blueprints and other things he has to do, but he doesn't have any kind of portability. I think he's just moved to a lighter laptop. He really needed something lighter because he was always going to sites and he needed to do measurements and record data.

An application that costs more, but seems to be easier to use, will draw more users than a cheap or free app that might be perceived to take more time to learn. In many cases, consumers will buy a more expensive piece of software simply because they recognize the brand, and already know how to work it, rather than accept another piece of software on the claims that it is more cost-efficient, easier to use and reliable.

He cheated again after that, when he submitted his final projects. The idiot was supposed to write two papers, one on something he was passionate about, and the other was a book report.

For the book report, he copied and pasted a bunch of movie reviews together, and submitted it. For the other paper, he wrote about the history of Quakers -- who exactly is passionate about Quakers? But beside that point, she thought it looked familiar, and she found the article in some mid 80's history magazine. Tobias is jealous of Lindsay's attraction to a "real doctor" like Simon, and hatches a plan to win back his wife by going to Boston to renew his medical license. He gets on the wrong bus, heading toward Canada.

Mal, mistaken for Michael, is arrested for another George Sr. crime, and escapes prison with the help of Jayne, using GOB's Segway as a getaway vehicle. They hit an inordinately fortified sand castle on the beach, and break it.

GOB, devestated at the loss of his Segway, and no company funds to buy another, begins to drink heavily with Jayne. They visit George Sr. in prison, and the three sing "The Hero of Canton" and the two are escorted out by guards.

Kaylee finds it difficult to fight off the affections of GOB after she fixes his Segway.

River is arrested after the Bluth Company's Mr. BananaGrabber commercial triggers another "incident," this time in Klimpy's Family Style Restaurant.

Simon, misunderstanding Kaylee's behavior with GOB as flirting, embarks to seduce Lindsay to get revenge. He later realizes that Lindsay is the type of woman that his father would have wanted him to marry, and breaks up with her by saying, "I've made a huge mistake."

The show was given the ultimate axe (after what, 4 episodes?) and despite all efforts, it's still cancelled, placed in the "good science fiction that was kicked" bin, along with Farscape and The Invisible Man. I think the biggest triumph for fans and Joss was that we got a movie, we got something past an abruptly cancelled television show.

It's not about it being a hit or not. Obviously all writers, directors, creators, etc. would love for a hit show. Firefly didn't get the same chance that Buffy and Angel did. They didn't have that teenage audience built in. It was prime for that kind of show, something less serious than X-Files, funny like a sitcom, but still edgy. Firefly was singular in that there wasn't a core audience for it. It was "whoever likes it, likes it" and then there were the Whedon fans who either loved it or hated it.

It was a difficult show to sell, and the fact that there was even a movie means that it was very successful. How many television shows in the last ten years have been cancelled halfway into its first season, only to be resurrected as a movie? It's quite a feat. It's an even bigger feat when you look at the fact that the show was aired out of order.

I think Whedon understands the business side of the industry. After all, this was the man who co-wrote and re-wrote a lot of movies that got a lot of attention, but he himself was pushed aside on the writing credits. He understands being snubbed and I think for someone with as much clout as he has, he's just a realist. I think he understands fully that it's not up to him whether Serenity gets a sequel. It's up to TPTB.

You have to move on, not because there's something better that will make you more money, you move on because it's the way it is, and you have to accept it and move on, or you can just stay where you are, and never get past it. You've had fun, and you'll love to have more fun, but it's not up to you whether you get to or not.

"The, um, the movie is finished. And the story is told. The world is not finished. There's more to tell, but that's always the case with everything I do and whether I get the chance to tell [it] or not it is up to somebody else. So I made sure that this movie had completion and didn't feel like a glorified prequel. It's its own piece and it wraps everything up. I have a sense of closure that I never had, and I can walk away satisfied. But if somebody tells me not to walk away, I'll turn right back around." - Comcast.net

Taking into account the type of movie it is and the complications of the entire thing....it did pretty well. 38 million dollars well. The show ended years ago, found life on DVD. The DVDs, however, aren't rented in most Blockbusters so people have to go and buy them, or find someone they can borrow them from. Considering its original run on Fox, where the episodes were aired out of order and were often pre-empted, a lot of people who tried giving it a chance during its run probably didn't want to revisit the show later, or had preconceived notions.

After several years of cult fandom, it's safe to say that there are millions and millions of Browncoats out there. The problem is, not all of them have access to the movie and that is a blunder by the studio. The wider the release, the worse the numbers are going to look if the movie doesn't perform well overall. "Oh, it only made ___ million in 3,000 theaters?" The movie only played in 2,189 U.S. theaters (according to boxofficemojo.com).

But it did open as number 2 on the opening chart. That's very important and will make a studio pay a little bit more attention.
