But could you believe that germs that accidentally cause a host to sneeze could evolve* such that they were more able to survive for long enough in the fog to be inhaled by another member of the hosts social group?

Presumably any such germs did not thrive unless they evolved* other transmission mechanisms.

Also, that germs that cause hosts that are not social animals to sneeze probably didnt get much benefit and might not evolve* in that direction (whats the prevalence of atmoshperic borne flu in non-social animals?)

Anyway what I'm suggesting is that you have it backwards - the germ probably adapted to fit the benefits rather than developing said benefits.

Where's the "grow new muscles in a vat overnight" outpatient graft center? Where's the "upload yourself into a computer" facility-- or, for that matter, even something as limited in brain/computer interaction as a VISOR? Where are the nanites, the artificial T-cell booster shots, the dermal synthesizers?

Dude, I'm fairly sure I get email offering me all that stuff every day.. you telling me that its all a scam and they dont really exist?

But you would never get a bunch of corporations to agree on such a thing. For one thing, one of them will have shareholders who DEMAND that they maximise their profits and step forward to licence the technology to get ahead of the pack.

You might not think they are stupid, but most of them have more care about the short term profits than the long term.

Well, here is a thought - they think it might help to join the cool crowd and it makes no difference to them, because the production costs of DVDs are minimal in any case. Any savings they make there will be eaten up by providing a fileserver and online DRM server.

Also, when Warner sell a DVD they dont sell it at store prices, they dont sell it at warehouse prices, they sell it at their price which is likely a lot less than store price.

I think it seems more reasonable with current technology that magnetic levitation would be used to fly the elevator away from the walls of the shaft - this gives the smoother ride that they mention but you also get the cable for up and down motion (and the counterweight for efficiency)

I'm not really interested in arguing that point however, my biggest concern is your seeming ignorance of the power that food and clothing could have over people who had neither. Do you suppose that just because they are not threatening bloody violence that there is no actual coercion?

I guess that you are looking at this issue from the same side as the religionists who are pushing their viewpoints here, and you think its ok. If you could look at it from the other side, and consider that the basic assumptions of the religionists are plain wrong then it becomes clear that to coerce people into believing frankly ridiculous (and many would consider harmful) ideas merely in order to propagate them endlessly is not a nice thing to do no matter how much sugar you coat them with.
