It sounds like a lovely idea, but I think anyone inventing this would be killed. The reason being that the implications for society are huge - and I don't think society could change quickly enough to cope.

Can the machine reproduce itself? Like a virus invading a host organism, the rate of spread will be important.. if you invent such a machine, then the first thing to do is not sell it, but to make a bunch of copies and distribute them far and wide..

Thats because "rich" will have changed. When there are no more "have"s and "have not"s, everybody will be rich, and the only people who will be richer than anybody else will be the ones who provide power and raw materials.. and that certainly won't be you.

Even more seriously, what is commonly known as seagulls are not restricted to beach areas and are not really even sea gulls as you don't see them very far out to sea. Instead, they live all over the country here (UK) and are known for being vicious scavengers who will even attack humans in the street for their food.

What would be interesting to see what westfield's reaction would be if you had a mechanism (from LCD film to... duct tape) for covering up your license plate each time you enter it. While I don't know the specifics of the law as it pertains to carparks in Australia - I'm sure regardless of what the law is, the rent-a-cops would bar your entry stating "private property".

The device I'm imagining would be a blank reflective backplate of the correct colour with an LCD overlay that could display any number and look like a real plate. Couple this with a camera with numberplate recognition software built into the vehicle and you can adapt your plate continuously according to the traffic stream. In fact you have two cameras front and rear, and you just turn invisible as your rear plate shows what the rear plate of the car in front is displaying, and your front plate shows what the front plate of the car behind is showing.

I wonder how long it will be before such a device is a) possible to make, and b) available to buy..

It's a good thing if teachers have a Facebook account that deals with class related issues, allows students to communicate about homework, ask questions, expand the subject, etc.

If that requires that students also have a Facebook account, just to get access to the teacher.. then that would be a horribly wrong thing. (and my experience of facebook is that if you don't have an account, you can't actually use the site)

It's a bad thing if teachers have a Facebook account they use to buddy with their students simply to share pictures, schmooze, gossip and otherwise engage in behavior that is unbecoming a teacher.

In the UK there are already automatic number plate recognition cameras in many many locations. They don't seem to be advertised all that well, alas.. For instance, I count at least five on a 10 mile stretch of country road that I regularly cycle along and which most car drivers (that I know) have never even noticed.. In fact I was told that many of the 'traffic monitoring' cameras (thats the blue ones, alongside most major roads), which previously took a low resolution image every minute or so and beamed it back to base have been silently upgraded to record number plates instead in recent years but I don't have a car so I don't know if that is generally known..
