I like it. I can't help but believe that unfettered world wide access to information will lead to a more informed populations that will shun oppression and xenophobia in favor of participatory government and ethno-religious tolerance. I have a lot of experience with this. Its a complex emotional process whichever way you decide to go. It is so emotional and personal that I think both options should be widely available and I respect anyone who makes a choice in this area. I don't assign any moral ranking to these two choices. As for me, I've done both. Both are tough roads but the outcome is pure joy.

I can't believe I am posting about this. I'm a Catholic, I'm a scientist, and my kids are the result of artificial insemination.

In my local Catholic community, these things are not discussed. Instead I hear mostly about practicing non-violent conflict resolution and a life time of charitable endeavors. That all works for me on the local level. Beyond that, the Catholic hierarchy can go pound sand. The pope and most of the clergy that rank high enough to wear silly hats tragically waste their energy on needlessly divisive issues. I'd rather they worked on poverty and resolving conflict without war.

Because I am a liberal who is concerned about social justice, I get excited by technologies that could be used to increase energy consumption by folks who are lower on the socio-economic ladder. Increased use of energy consumption for things like refrigeration, home heating, and personal car transportation is something I don't think should be reserved for the upper classes. Inventions that lower the cost of personal energy consumption are worthy of attention and disproportionate investment from fair minded progressives.

Perhaps this competing force of moderation in Iran will grow its influence through hi tech and universities.

  15. At Will employment actually decreases unemployment on How Best Buy Tried To Whip The Geek Squad Into Shape · · Score: 1

At Will employment laws, contrary to initial gut level thinking, actually raise hiring levels and job creation. Hiring managers in At Will countries know they can fix a hiring mistake easily if the person they hired is not right for the job. Hiring managers make mistakes sometimes in their hiring decisions. It happens. Just like any of us make mistakes in our other job functions. The risk of a bad hire is low because there is an available remedy. They can fire the person who is not working out.

Hiring managers in non At Will countries also make hiring mistakes. However, their available remedies are quite restricted. That means there is a lot of risk associated with creating a new position and hiring someone for it. The result is that fewer positions are created. Employers looking for new office locations take this into account. They are far more likely to bring jobs to your state if your state is an At Will employment state.

This is why Silicon Valley happened in California and it will never happen in France. California is an At Will employment state.
