As things go digital the concept of ownership begins to slip away because it requires something to be physical in representation and not easily duplicated (DVDs are easily ripped, so they truly are not just a physical representation), so maybe replacing your at home DVD collection is precisely what may occur at some point in the future.

The generally viewed performance and requirements are what really caused Vista to tank in the eyes of consumers. Good as it may be for some, not everyone has a new computer or a desire to buy a new one. Couple that with bad performance on budget laptops and there's your whole case right there.

Assuming what I've read is true, win 7 is just Vista with slightly better performance. The startup time in an application really is not that relevant these days, as once its open what really matters is how it is during usage. Now if OO.o is slow even while typing, making it difficult to type at normal speeds on your computer then I would say you have a valid concern. Otherwise taking a few to several extra seconds to startup is nothing when you consider it probably already takes you a few minutes just to boot into windows on that same slow machine.

Heck even my quad core machine takes at least 3 minutes just to get to the point where i can start doing stuff on it, compared with just over 1 minute for Ubuntu on the same machine.

Besides most people who have "experience" in basic usage of Linux probably also don't live under a rock and also use Windows from time to time as well.
