We probably going to self-destruct pretty quickly here. Let's not forget this lesson, and store some carbon for next civilization 50000 years from now, maybe they will get a clue.
"It is hard to get effects at very low concentrations."
This is not true at all. Depending on state of your health, age etc you have various reactions and allergies to different chemical compounds, dosage has very little to do with anything if person is already sick and won't / can't tolerate certain chemical compounds. In fact certain over the counter drugs can significantly weaken people that can't tolerate them even in smallest quantities. Basically what you saying is that if i feed you poison in very small quantities for a long time then it won't affect you and you should not worry about it at all. As long as dosage is small enough it will all come out? ridiculous...
but you are right - industrial chemicals in water are equally as dangerous.
Although there are people that write obscure code in any language, if you smart and want to get stuff done, you would write clean readable code. its really not that hard neither in php or perl, or in any other language outside of lisp, however now that perl is falling out of favor with new programming recruits, you will be seeing a lot more crappy php even as their "skill level" is skyrocketing.
If you want to write clean php just make all your variables global and prepend 2 underscores in front of their name to make them look cool !!!:D
If you want to write clean perl just follow "Best Perl Practices" book by Damian Conway.
Liquidrage!
You are not thinking. If you think USA did a nice thing by going to Iraq you are an idiot, and i suggest you take airplane there , i.e straight to Baghdad and walk around ask people how nice it is that US invaded them. Just go!!! Oh and BTW before US invaded you COULD GO ANYWHERE without getting shot at. Awesome change. Before invasion: schools were working, hospitals functioning, people had water, electricity, food etc. DO YOU HAVE food, water, electricity LIQUIDRAGE? How about if you meet a kid, having no hands cause US missile took them away while they were ramping up the invasion ( Shock and Awe ). Do YOU, LIQUIDRAGE, WANT TO HAVE YOUR KID HAVE NO HANDS BECAUSE OF STUPID OIL AND POLITICS??
so before you say something else as stupid as you have said, consider that whatever you saying is hardwired in your brain by military strength propaganda that you got brainwashed with in US, THE INVADER, which happens to be home to a lot of good people same as Iraq. And these people don't want to get bombed, shot at, invaded, governed by outside country etc.
after watching the presentation and following that with reading some comments i realised how pathetic they are compared to this persons idea and long years he put into this project cannot be wiped out by a number of idiots. oh yes, i personally attack most of your absolutely stupid idiots and i call you what you are.
on the other note, i agree that a global effort to calculate/simulate an experiment on the large number of computers across the world is a good idea and he should probably look into that while they are looking for funding. the idea is brilliant, and the cause is good. i dont think he over-exaggerated the impact of the device, once its ready. in fact it could go a lot further than what he mentioned, but of course its a fantasy/speculation at this point.
cheap energy could help us with most of the problems that we have right now except for one , and i'll repeat other persons argument here to some extent:
if mr. bussard figured out how to get rid of all morons(interpretations vary), then we would not have problems that we have right now. we would have a lot bigger problems caused by morons that got rid of others.
he is right about the rice bowl. the budget of DOE is way over-blown for how much output they have realistically produced in the field and he deserves a chance. there is a fat layer of bureocrats, that would not want to leave their cushy spots, where they dont do anything, except making stupid decisions and play golf. its like that in any goverment project, thats funded above their necks.
i think this guy deserves funding, and if google funds him, well its great for google.
I agree with this. in fact following the logic, in order for Gahndi to critisize English governor in India, he first would need to go and conquerqor a nation, become a governor there, and only then he could critisize..
Same goes to Safeway critics - "open your goddamn shop first , and then critisize it"
it seems like a bad logic to me..
i think neighbour will be able to sniff the traffic on your network, so he would be able to reverse whatever changes are made to packets. i'm far from expert on the subject, but if you are on the same subnet , sniffing should be trivial.
I think the problem is not the language, but programmers. so it really does not matter if it is lisp or c++ or whatever, although since you have so much c++ material on your blog, you have to promote it(i guess). i have seen some really bad php code and some really good php code, same goes for perl and python.. i'm sure as c++ coder rails would not work for you the same as c++ does seem sort of odd to me , especially to write webapps. instead of complaining about particular language implementation try to find out if code that you are looking at is compliant to language desirable maintainability practices. i've been looking at particular bad c++ code that had a lot of bugs that "would just go away" if it was NOT written in compiled language. so, no i dont think proper modularity that exists by default in a number of webapp building frameworks, particularly rails, catalyst, turbogears, and number of others "tries to showhorn you into a combined model where modules are not particularly well selected", because if you really know how your stuff works(tm) in any of these frameworks you can pick and choose what and how you want it to work. And yes, for large applications, after you've changed some stuff, you dont have to recompile everything to see if it works, which gets tedious really fast. in fact, if i would want my stff to work in c++, i would first write it in some other language, like perl or ruby or php, and then rewrite it in c++, just so i dont have to babysit my compiler. but of course, YMMV here.. peace
I would like to point out that energy efficiency goes down, and in our times of energy wars, mc*c is the most dreaded thing. So virtualisation is meant to become the energy compliant thing.
but, i'm with you on slashdot/geek thing.. only until Oracle and IBM will acquire some market players.
hmm.. maybe they should buy VMWare:)
