Any android device can be a 'dumb' terminal for your data.
Excuse the necessary pedantry, but do you realise that something cannot be a "dumb terminal for data", and that it's quite an insensible way to formulate it regardless of what the term "dumb terminal" actually means? Are you aware of the fact that "dumb terminals" involve remote processing, and not mere access to remote data? I just had to clarify this, as people keep talking about dumb terminals and thin clients as it actually has little to do with the topic at hand.
Microsoft, listen and learn, because Apple is doing things the right way. You've released a pretty buggy, poorly designed major revision of your OS, alright, why not, but right then you release a service pack to your previous major version of your OS to make it better. This is NOT the way to go!
In order to make your users move on to your new but inferior major revision, you need to ruin the version of your OS that everyone is using. Just look at how Apple handled it. They just released a pretty buggy major revision of their OS, but it's okay! Because to make up for it they updated the previous version that everybody was using so that computers equipped with it won't even boot anymore! This way users are more than eager to move on to the new version, despite its flaws!
Steve Jobs' genius will never cease from amazing us, nor shall you cease from learning from it.
"-Hunny, you've been standing in the middle of the room waving your arms towards the celling for about 30 minutes now, are you sure you're alright? -Yeah leave me alone I'm playing Superman!"
I know it's gonna sound weird but the only feature I envy to the Mac OS X interface is desktop icons starting from the right side of the desktop instead of the left, well this and seeing drives mounted on the desktop.
For some reason it makes the whole difference to me, yet of all the customisation utilities I've tried, some would allow you to "save" the icon placement on the desktop, but none would allow you to have them automatically places to the right..
I would say any device could be used to a form of Torture.
And when it comes to the law enforcement you'll always have cops torturing people. Always. And often they won't get in trouble for doing that. Power corrupts people, and the only solution is to watch these people.
Things are going downhill with the UN calling tasering "torture". Because we don't torture, therefore, we don't taser. So let's call it something cooler, hipper, like "waterboarding". I'm waiting for suggestions.
Make that hippie. The religious conservatives you referred to are, in a sense, hippies, albeit a special kind of hippies, in that they spend all their energy trying to make people care about whatever they think is oh so important, be it "saving the planet" or "not committing a sin of flesh".
Did my comment turn you on to the point you had to perform that sort of intellectual masturbation that was strictly irrelevant to the topic at hand anyways?
I agree, only a hippie could be silly enough to believe that the solution is in convincing people into going out of their natural way to "save the world", that's completely ignorant of the human nature and more particularly our ordering of priorities to think it can work.
There's nothing wrong with this neologism, as it conveys perfectly accurately the message that the author intended to emit, by making a reference to something that everyone knows about...
Here's another shocker. Planting trees isn't always a good solution, and it can sometimes contribute to the problem. Not all forests release more O2 than they store CO2, plus they decrease the Earth's surface albedo. Fortunately most tropical forests do release more O2, except new forests (young trees release more CO2 it seems).
That's nice, but I only find it mildly impressive. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's surely no major difference between the algorithm to pilot an RC plane/heli as shown in the videos and the algorithm to pilot a virtual plane/heli in a flight simulation.
However, here are the nice news, that means that you can safely and precisely auto-pilot RC planes/helis, which could lead to interesting domestic uses. I could bet that within the next 15 years, every self-respecting Slashdotter will have a fully automated RC heli with a built-in camera and piloted over WiFi to do whatever nerds like us would dream to use that for. Having a tiny helicopter hovering over your face might be an interesting way to wake up, but it'd also be a good way to check out what the wife is doing while you're at work.
That guy's just got what was the issue with the Internet nowadays. Because legitimate websites like YouTube or Google Video don't weight down on the network's bandwidth use, it's illegitimate uses that do so! It's so simple, it makes me wonder why people don't understand that, it's not legitimate uses of the Internet that clogs it, it's only the illegitimate ones.
Or, to put more simply, P2P = piracy = illegal = bad = the root of all issues! Ever heard of Occam's Razor? It's the simplest explanation that always wins! Why can't you people just accept that?
Just great, an example of a fellow Frenchman surrendering without even fighting! Yeah, our American and British friends on Slashdot really need to us to rub that example in their face, so that we make it clear that it's not because something is a stereotype that it's necessary false.
As for the unconfirmed theory that the Moon was created by an impact on Earth, I've always wondered what happened to the impacting object... any theories on that?
Err, obviously part of it merged with the Earth and what got ejected made up the Moon along with stuff originally belonging to the Earth?
Duh. I was going to try and make a funny reply, but your comment just killed my buzz. Obviousness overload combined with a subtleness deficiency I guess..
The Earth doesn't revolve around the moon, and the moon doesn't revolve around Earth. They actually both revolve around a point that astronomers call the apotex, which lies about 187 million miles from Earth.
Whoever modded that informative didn't get whatever there was to understand about this comment anyways (nothing I guess? Even Google doesn't know what's an apotex). Seriously tho, the GP is wrong in that the Earth and the Moon revolve around their barycentre, which is if I recall correctly a little bit above Earth's surface.

While modern operating systems will always clear all malloc()ed memory, so that you cannot get to other processes' data
What do they mean by clear the memory? Because when I malloc() (and not calloc()) I seem to get whatever was there before..
Ahhh, yes, design by committee.
Exactly! Except that it's not design by committee at all.
Can we have a "What would Slashdot look like if someone artistic designed it" Page?
It's already been done and implemented, and if I was one of the guys who participated I'd be pretty pissed at your comment.
It's not called torture any more - it was "robust interrogation until death" when carried out in a prison in Iraq.
You don't ever watch the news do you? It's officially called Enhanced Interrogation Techniques, look it up.
I would say any device could be used to a form of Torture.

crazy meth'd-up homeless guy charges cop with knife...cop tases or cop shoots. Which do you prefer?
Err.. I'm confused.. is he a terrorist yes or no?

In Soviet Russia... waves hit YOU.
In Soviet Russia, jokes make you sensible.
Everyone is a little bit fascist...

How about releasing the DVD at the same time as the movie, so people didn't have to download it if they wanted to watch it at home.
In hard times, you must make hard choices and sacrifices. Let's sacrifice the theatre industry to the profit of the DVD industry! AND VIRGINS!!

Well when you think that it's 5-10% for only one such moon in whole planetary systems, that makes it quite rare indeed.
