Interesting! The thing about such debates is that all arguments are based on assumptions, assumptions which are difficult to verify. I'd be interested to see anything close to a graph showing the distribution of offsprings depending on household income/education btw!

So you vote libertarian because you think the world would be such a better place if all the rich people (i.e. not you or anyone you know) like Paris Hilton or Bill Gates got to keep all their fucking money instead of paying their taxes which can then be spent into giving you better healthcare or broadband connection?

If you ask me I think you're a dumbass. A dumbass by principle. Actually, that's funny to want fairness for rich people, when it's hardly fair that these people got this rich to begin with (unless you think douchebags on Wall Street really do deserve their 7 figure salaries), and often enough they didn't give a crap about fairness for the rest of the people when they got rich the way they did (there's a reason why "robber barons" are called that, but it's not even just about them).

The key to building wealth is to always live below your means.

Nope, although that's the key to not going broke, which many rich people even fail at doing. No one gets rich by saving money, you get rich by making money, tons of it. Because someone who goes for the riches will make 100 times more money than you could save.

First, thats not entirely correct. I do know legal Mexican immigrants.

The question is, did they get their visa from the lottery? No? Wikipedia says Mexico is ineligible for it. I'll trust Wikipedia for that.

The illegals are ruining it for everybody else. If they weren't cheating, the system for legal immigration would be much more open.

No, that's utter bullshit. The system created the illegals, the illegals didn't indirectly create the system. That's just some bullshit justification to keep Mexicans, legal or not, out. Cause we don't like them, that's the real reason. Lou Dobbs will never tell you he doesn't like Mexicans, he'll make some bullshit reasons like "illegal immigrants = crime" when everybody knows the real reason is he's sick of seeing his country "invaded" with brown people who don't speak good English.

One of the principal lacts of their evil is to sponsor a media-culture that gets ordinary schmucks like yourself to identify emotionally with them, aspire to their condition, and to assume an attack on the values of the truly rich to be a personal threat to your own status and mobility. You are also trained to revile those perceived as less fortunate/gifted as yourself - never suspecting that to the real rich, the difference between you and the homeless doesn't amount to a rounding error.

Hallelujah. Which yields weird and amusing behaviours from middle class nowhere-near-rich people. They're against taxes on the rich as if they ever were going to make it one day (this being said I can relate to that delusion, I always believe that I'm about to make it big and picture myself in ten years with more money than I could need), and they don't want any "handouts" to poor people, even though that's tens of millions of Americans we're talking about.

The American lower-class doesn't even exist, if you pay attention to political debates. I wonder if it's because no one wants to hear about the poor, even those who are on their way to poverty, or if because there's so many poor, and so little difference between the poor and the middle class compared to the upper class that the lower class is now part of the middle class.

Middle class/rich people usually have no desire to come here, at least not the ones I've talked to.

No wonder we don't. Emigrating to the USA is such a hassle, given that we most likely live in a decent situation wherever we live it gives us little incentive to want to go ahead with all that immigration PITA to begin with. So all the USA attract are really poor people with no qualifications, while the better people fail to even see the point of trying.

Dude, I'm French and even by trying the legal way (visa lottery) I didn't get anything. Even if I had the chance to be picked by the computer, it would have taken two years before I would have been allowed to move to the USA. Fortunately being European if I want to move to a decent country I can just move to some place like Ireland (which I did).

Mexicans aren't even eligible to that visa lottery thing. That doesn't leave them a lot of solutions, unless they've got close family in the USA. Immigration law in the USA is completely absurd, and it makes illegals because it leaves so many people without any legal solution.

Think about it, a hundred years ago all you had to do was show up at Ellis Island and if you didn't have tuberculosis you were in. Now you can be Australian or English and if you manage to get in you live under the permanent threat of deportation for no good reason.

  9. Anything goes on The Golden Age of Infinite Music · · Score: 1

Yep, 10 years ago, 16-year olds would listen and enjoy whatever was on the radio. Now you've got 16-year olds listening to every album by Booker T. & The MG's or The Animals, and enjoying it much more than the Top 40 crap.

This will probably have an effect we can't see very clearly yet on music making : anything goes. Think about it, until now you couldn't get a record deal if you wanted to make some kind of music that no one plays on the radio anymore. Now, it's like the whole world jumped in the giant ball pit of all the records ever made, and listening to whatever they like indiscriminately of how popular or how old it is. I think that means that a musician in any genre has now the potential to find his following, even if no one touched the genre in question for the last 40 years.

But it doesn't stop at just a new increased demand in the more obscure genres of music. If today a 16-year old's favourite musician is Miles Davis and the likes, if ten years from now he must become a musician, what are the odds he'll want to join a rock band, and what are the odds he'll want to blow into a trumpet? That's right, he's more likely to grow into the second coming of Miles Davis, and if he's anywhere near that good, a lot of people will listen.

This is what the mysterious future of music holds. You heard it here first!
