  1. *NAL ??? on Shakedown: How the Business Software Alliance Operates · · Score: 1

Posting at 1 in such a long thread, this will probably not be seen by 99% of the viewers but just for the hell of it...

Most commenters here take care to add "IANAL" somewhere in their post.
Well, if YANAL, then your pseudo-legal advice is not worth the time it takes to read it.

It is fine and dandy to suggest that others fight, countersue, challenge the legaily of [...], assert their Nth amenment rights, etc., all from the comfort of your ergonomic chair.

The question is: has anyone done it? Is there any precedent?
Has anyone successfuly challenged a EULA?
Has anyone successfuly fought a court battle with the BSA? Without losing an ungodly amount of money in the process?

    Well? Didn't think so...

The fact is, we're all sheep and there is nothing we can do to stop the wolves from thinning the herd.

We have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms here

How I wish people would read it instead of just referring to it.

    Specifically:
    33. (1) Parliament or the legislature of a province may expressly declare in an Act of Parliament or of the legislature, as the case may be, that the Act or a provision thereof shall operate notwithstanding a provision included in section 2 or sections 7 to 15 of this Charter.

Unlike the US Consistution, there has been no widespread effort to undermine these freedoms, either

I can't find the exact reference but the Canadian law permits postal workers to open and read mail at their discression if they have reasonalble grounds to believe that the letters have some sort of connection to a crime. No warrant needed.

  5. On-board features on Abit's New Motherboard Lays On The Ports · · Score: 1

Which brings us to another topic.

Many motherboards today include features that were traditionally used as add-on cards. IDE RAID controllers (usually HighPoint or Promise), sound, video, IEEE1394, etc.

I'd like to hear your opinions on what can be considered decent (or even good) on-board solutions as compared price/feature/performance-wise to their add-on counterpats.

Here's what I gathered so far:

Integrated video: The concensus seems to be "don't bother".

Integrated RAID: Several recommendations for HPT 372.

Integrated sound: nForce, C-Media (which?) are OK. AC97 is junk.

    Thanks.

Given that their bullying tactics have made the news in Salon and Slashdot, and been plastered all over various aquarium-related special interest sites, PetsWarehouse needs to ask whether they are decreasing or increasing negative publicity by continuing to press charges. Even if they get some cash by intimidating defendants into settling, they've also earned a permanent reputation as an abusive company that responds to criticism with ridiculous legal threats.

Really? So far no printed publication has mentioned this case.
A Google News Search returns zero (0) hits.

The "power" of the internet (in this case salon + slashdot) is overrated.

I think a company such as Forté could create a real standard using an encoding method similar to yEnc (it wasn't "invented" by yEnc's author, anyway).
