why not support your local mom n pop shop or buy it from any number of shop on the net? you seem to be the type that the author is talking about in the article. people looking to knock off $25 (Windows) that doesn't really make much difference to Dell.
Windows 95 is the only one that people line up to buy/upgrade. After Win95, the only way that people get new Windows is from purchasing new PC. you can stop your lie there.
Agree. he is not even the first person who called Vista is the new Windows Me. my IQ have drop 5 points from reading all these insightful post on slashdot. slashdot = what a shithole.
Dell make more money by selling their PC to Windows users. You're in the less than 3% of the desktop OS marketshare. why do they care about you? when Dell can make more money with Windows and their support already build around supporting Windows while 3% of Linux users going to cost them a lot to support and who is to say that Dell will gain all the linux desktop users? that 3% is even less now compare to Windows for Dell to bother with. Not to mention the FACT that most Linux users build their own PC or buy from online/mom and pop shop vs using Dell's crap hardware.
Let's recap. For Dell to support Linux and get your money. Dell is about to spend million to train their employees, make sure the hardware work with whichever distro they chose and rework their supply chain to include Dell Linux line just to gain a less than 3% linux desktop market? LOL. Dell can probably make more money by resell Apple Mac.
how in the hell is UAC any different than su in *nix? how the fuck can you say UAC is overly-complicated scheme when *nix used the fucking "UAC" for over years. you Sir is a fucking tool.
No, you're wrong and you got corrected yet you still act like you're right. How about the fact that people want to use PostgreSQL on Windows? Did you ever think about that? So, if tomrrow Microsoft published an article showing people how to run OpenOffice on Windows. Are you going to post the same comment that Office is not a profitable business.
Microsoft already have such killer. it's called Sharepoint but your inner OSS zealot have blinded you with MS is evil...etc. OOo is the one who is playing catch up.
what kind of retarded logic are you trying to pull? for fuck sake, even Dell fucking sell Linux loaded with Dell PC, fucking fry's sell linux pc and even fucking WalMart sell linux pc for awhile. are you a fucking dumbass? typical retarded slashdot poster. you're paying for the Apple's tax every fucking time you buy a Mac. unlike PC where you don't have to pay MS's tax. there are thousand shop on and off line who is happy to sell you just the fucking hardware. fuck! my IQ just drop 50 point trying to explain this to a dumbass like you!
You can dual boot(bootcamp) OS X and Vista on a Mac but you can't run OS X on any Intel pc because Apple doesn't sell OS X to anyone who wish to build his/her own PC to run OS X.
NEXTSTEP was a combination of several parts:
* a Unix-like operating system based on the Mach kernel, plus source code from UC Berkeley's BSD Unix
* Display PostScript and a windowing engine
* the Objective-C language and runtime
* an object-oriented (OO) application layer, including several "kits"
* development tools for the OO layers
Microsoft hired a group of developers from Digital Equipment Corporation led by Dave Cutler to build Windows NT, and many elements of the design reflect earlier DEC experience with Cutler's VMS and RSX-11. The operating system was designed to run on multiple instruction set architectures and multiple hardware platforms within each architecture. The platform dependencies are largely hidden from the rest of the system by a kernel mode module called the HAL.
who say OSS developers don't get pay? The FACT is companies such as IBM or RedHat hire a lot of professional developers to work on Linux for free on their dime! do you think linux will be where it is today with bunch of amature? get real!
i have work for several small business owner with under 30 employees. The owner as well as the employee who use software such as Windows, Adobe...etc. Do not see software as asset or something that they need to pay for. They are willing to spend money on hardware and often they order from reseller(there are many reseller in the U.S. who are more than happy to sell you a complete PC without any OS install so don't think there is a MS tax. there isn't.) with no OS install and install the ilegal copy of Windows or Adobe on it and use those software to make money. the only small business that i work for and own all legal copy of software is a ISV. i guess since they sell software for living. they understand the hard works that was put into making the software. Small business doesn't really have a stellar record on software license and that's the fact. i bet you if we pick 10 random U.S. small business and audit them. at least close to 90% of them use ilegal copy of Windows or other commerical software. The funny thing is they will bitch about the software that they didn't purchase because it didn't work the way they want it to be.
it seem like history is repeating itself. first it was RedHat, the first Linux distro with praise to dethrone Windows then Mandrake or SuSe and year after year with different distro. you're singing the same old song with different tune but it's still the same old song.
i did VB then VB.net and C#. which VB.net's keyword/operator is not necessary? Care to give an example?
VB.net's My keyword also make development faster than C#. i'm not sure what your complaint is.
Tool doesn't define a programmer. You can create readable, easy to mantain code in VB or shitty code in C++. If you don't like VB then don't use it but don't assume people who use VB doesn't know other lanauge. it just a tool!
your original point is pretty much what the other gusy said. you did react like you just got insulted because someone else point out that there are people out there who already doing that. Nice try tho.
VB.net is a real programming lanaguage as C#/Java. It's not the tool's fault if you don't know how to use it properly. Overly verbose? that just mean it's easier to read than your l33t C++ code. You don't like VB. Don't use it. it's that simple.
You get support for OEM ware from whoever you purchase. You do get support for MS software. I was having problem with Windows Live OneCare. it doesn't lunch when i click on it. i send MS Live OneCare tech support a email yesterday and i got a reply today that solve the problem. it turn out i have to uninstall all.Net 1.1, service pack...etc and just install.Net 2.0. You can stop lying about the MS support. Unless you want support for your privated copy. You need to stop this typical OSS FUD about MS support. I use MS support and i got response and at work we have ActionPack and Empower subscription and we can get the support that is included. Typical OSS FUD.
so...people that want to be a Doctor doesn't need anyone to teach them how to do any surgey. people who want to be a doctor will find a way to pull off an open heart surgey? are you retarded?

how about the fact that OpenOffice just suck compare to MS Office?
uh...what the hell is your point? Do you even have a fucking point at all or are you just spewing out b.s. because you can't understand .Net/Java?

let's take a look in the real world.

what's your bullshit again?

have a nice pie of STFU!
"unpaid volunteers"? Linux or OSS for that matter won't be where it is today if it weren't for "paid volunteers" from IBM or RedHat...etc.

inconsistent interface. Ajax is a hack. Not a solution.
and after they purchased these "open source" computer. they install their pirated Windows Vista on it! Woof!
