  4. Re:First support your phones on Samsung Focusing On Phone Software · · Score: 1

    I'm torn on the issue.

I think they should keep updating phones while they're continuing to sell them. The iPhone 3gs has iOS 5 because they're still selling it. This helps drive sales of older models (which may have higher margins as they age) because people are more likely to buy the comparable device with newer software & better features over the one with older software.

It would certainly be nice if they kept updating software after they discontinue it. My issue is that people shouldn't be buying phones (or any other tech) based on what it "will do" and buy more for what it does. This will also help discourage manufacturers from releasing products knowingly that suck now but will not suck later.

I applaud Samsung for this because if they don't want to keep the devices up to date then at least the community can. It would certainly be nice if they could keep the things up to date on their own, but I'd be willing to bet most of their share holders are interested in seeing their money go towards new products than old products that don't make money.

    Other pro-Mac considerations:
    1. Battery life. My 13" unibody MacBook Pro is almost 3 years old now and I still get decent battery life, 3 hours easily under moderate load. My previous HP dv1000 series laptop was lucky to get 2 under light load when it was new.
    2. Trackpad - the Mac touchpad/trackpads are fantastic!
    3. Magsafe adapter!! I cannot emphasize this one enough, especially with kids around.
    4. Backlit keyboard. This is available on many PC laptops but not all. I very much miss this when I'm using other systems as I often like to work in environments where light doesn't seem to hit the keyboard sufficiently.
    5. The screen is a huge benefit. I'm amazed at how lousy the screen is on a lot of laptops still these days. I could be mistaken but I believe it is systems with these TN panels where as Apple only uses IPS panels. Difference is night and day compared to most of the budget systems friends & family own.

It does not upload 100mb of data. Dropbox syncs at the block level using an rsync-like algorithm. Dropbox definitely needs to scan the entire container to figure out which blocks have changed and upload. I don't know what the block size is like or if it is determined by Truecrypt/Dropbox/both, but chances are if you change 1mb it is only going to upload approximately 1mb.

  7. Re:Privacy? on Google Drive Launching Next Week With 5GB Free Space · · Score: 1

Yes, it only uploads the changes. The Dropbox client still needs to scan the entire container to determine what has changed however.

The only other downfall I have to using Dropbox+Truecrypt is remembering to unmount the volume each time. If you have a Truecrypt volume mounted in multiple locations you end up with a conflicting file which you need to manually correct. It can be a pain.

I use EncFS in my Dropbox (which BoxCryptor is built on). This way the contents are encrypted and the synchronization happens at the file level, less chance of conflicting files. This also means I can set up my home machine to automatically mount the EncFS volume. My concern is about cloud privacy, not about physical privacy in my home so this works well.

They moved it behind the steering wheel for the 2012 model.

Back to the OP comparing the Yaris to the Prius, I don't think that's a fair comparison. The Prius is a larger, roomier, comfier car. If you're looking at a Yaris you don't choose a Prius to save gas.

Which would be great if they actually provided a decent user experience. I use MacPorts to install small things like MacFUSE and wget but to install full applications is a chore if it even works. I tried using it to install the GIMP a couple years ago which failed after a few hours of compilation.

I switched to Mac for the user experience. I am a seasoned developer who is plenty comfortable using a terminal to get around but I don't want to do it to install day to day apps. MacPorts certainly isn't on the list of things I use to brag about my Mac.

Ubuntu provides a fantastic user experience with the Add/Remove Software (or whatever they call it now). You don't even need to do anything special to install DEB packages. Download, double-click to install. gdebi talks to APT, installs any dependencies if required and done.

Apple also provides a fantastic way to install apps. Download, drag to Applications folder, done. Having the Mac App store to do this in a central way would be great in theory but it isn't open enough for me.

If someone created an Ubuntu-like "App Store" for the Mac based on MacPorts or Fink but with pre-compiled packages it would be incredible. I've heard rumours of Cydia coming to the Mac, this might be just the thing I'm talking about.

  18. Re:Apt-get??? on Apple To Distribute OS X Lion via the Mac App Store · · Score: 5, Insightful

The difference is that package managers like apt, yum, etc let you specify your own sources. Apple's App Stores do not allow this. Without jailbreaking, the iOS devices can only get apps from Apple.

If I install Ubuntu and want to get the latest and greatest from vendor X they can just give me an installer which adds themselves to my apt sources. I think Adobe does this, but it's been a few years since I've used Linux and my primary desktop.

I've been primarily an Apple user, but if Mac ever goes closed like iOS does I'll be back on Linux in a split second.

Great suggestion! Have you ever tried it? A colleague and I were looking at Smokescreen and some other similar projects when we wanted to an old page with some Flash for a client working on the iPad.

Smokescreen looks fantastic in their demos, but they don't make it available for download anywhere and the last update to their site was nearly a year ago. This was a post "weeks" before they get the source code out. Hopefully eventually it is out eventually because it seems like a great project.

By grabbing the JS source we did try to demo it with a few pages and it croaked. It might be that our SWF files were poorly coded, we didn't create them. I suspect this might be a case similar to IE rendering bad code correctly while other browsers croak.

The other major problem is that this kind of solution needs to be implemented by the web author. I can't "install" this on my iPad and hope all Flash content magically works.

Another script we tried was called Gordon (src: https://github.com/tobeytailor/gordon/wiki/). Unfortunately this only works with Flash v1/v2 SWF files.

Both Gordon and Smokescreen render SWF files in the browser which is great if this is all you have. I certainly imagine this Adobe one that compiles some HTML5 code from the Flash source file works better.
