Yes, it was just a joke, and yes, you're probably right, but what about the bill posted earlier today that would make it a felony to trade mp3s on P2P networks? That would be a criminal matter tried in criminal courts and have the same effect.
I haven't tried it, but someone else posted info about www.access4free.com. The first 10 hours in a month are free and after that it's $1/hour up to $10. There is no monthly fee, so if you don't use it's free and if you end up using it alot, it's only $10/month.
I think they're talking about people that don't have access to broadband or aren't interested in high speed connections, but still want to get on the internet.
"When you take a paycut, in a weak economy, that $30 a month is one of the first luxuries to go"
I was unemployed most of last year, but my broadband connection was the only luxury I did keep. I was eating ramen and hotdogs and never left the apartment to save on gas and being tempted to spend money on other stuff, but I would have gone insane without high-speed internet (plus, I used it to look for jobs). And I pay $50/month. Well, I didn't have the option of switching to dialup since I haven't had a phone line in 3 years.(cell phone for talkie, cable for surfie)
If this passes, there will be so many felons roaming the streets that it won't mean anything anymore. When you go to fill out an application, and it asks you if you've ever been convicted of a felony, it will have a check box next to it that says file sharing so they will know to ignore it. Or it will say "have you ever been convicted of a felony other than file sharing".
"Okay, now it seems you're suggesting that an album should only ever be sold... once?"
If someone was NEVER going to buy it because they didn't like it enough to spend the money on it, but their friend offered them a copy free and they took it, is that still theft? The origional vendor lost something he was never going to get anyway.
"He regularly gets reports on Nike trainers washing up on coasts. He has even worked out the path taken across the world's waters by a dead body in a survival suit."
Who made this "survival suit"? and was it robotic as well?
If you use Google's toolbar, it has a button to highlight the search words even on the actual page. and it also makes a button for each word to click on and quickly search the page for it.
Unless the driver is a moron, then the route should be much more direct. Seeing as when I do a traceroute to pretty much anywhere it goes through at least 2 or 3 major cities that aren't even remotely in the right direction.

"I'd burn through the free hours on a Saturday"
10 straight hours on a dialup connection? That would drive me fucking insane!
Well, I guess if you had to get something done it's better than nothing, but for surfing I would choose the nothing and go find something else to do.

But it's not the public, it's an exclusive, private group of my 50,000 closest Kazaa friends.

CDs are bought by people with waaay too much money.
"or by the other method of selling to those without brains"
And that's why the lottery works. Or as I like to call it "a tax on people who are bad at math"
"sometimes when I see pedestrians walking beside the road, I'll get an urge to run them over"
Try driving after playing carmageddon3 for a couple weeks nonstop.
I'm just looking for that damned Pause button. I need to pee!
Didn't you know that eventually the web will just be one big text file and the way it is viewed will be governed by your browser and its plugins?

"much less time than it would take to go overground"
Since they are underground, they are closer to the center of the earth making the radius smaller which means their path would be shorter.
It's obviously from the early 70s. look at the drugs they must have been on!
