i'm aware you can tap fiber without disrupting it but it's underwater which seems difficult to start with and it doesn't mean all the cuts were by the NSA. (since apparently everyone is spy happy)
i get what they are trying to do, stop jillionaires from dumping money anonymously into campaigns. here's a better idea: stop allowing political orgs from accepting donations. if someone is running a campaign, they should be given a fixed amount of money and a fixed date to begin campaigns. i really dont want to hear about who is running for president two years before hand.
note: i said it was a better idea, not that politicians rather die than let this happen.
128MB L4 cache. [...] on-package (not on-die) pool of memory
what this means is the memory is not on the same piece of silicon as the CPU, just stuffed in the same chip package. this means they have to be connected by a lot of tiny wires instead of being integrated directly. the downside to this is that there is bandwidth between the L4 memory and the CPU is very limited and it uses more power. like AMD's first APUs where just two ICs on the same chip, i dont not think this will result in a drastic performance improvement but i'm unsure of the power savings. If AMD gets wise, they will beat Intel to the punch but then again. though if AMD is really smart, they would put out ARMv8 chips not just for servers(/desktops?) but for smartphones/tablets and laptops.
good news! all users that dont use Netflix will be unaffected. I can only surmise that this malware replaces all movie descriptions with "It stinks." and a rating of one star.
the good news is that he's made and excellent point. the bad news is that a shortsighted authority figure is going to loose his shit over this and evan is going to need a lawyer.
Imagine for a minute that we put "kill switches" inside our human soldiers. If they don't obey our orders, we can kill them remotely.
In such a case, well, that's it, they can't do *anything* about that, they just obey, right?
any state that tried to do this would have an instant revolution on their hands. willful compliance has it's limits and martyrs are inspiration for others to revolt.
No possible way... they could... I don't know... Remove [kill switches]?:)
in the case of machines... a) it would be ease to integrate it in a way that they cannot be removed by anyone b) booby trap it
It is also possible that we'll become the machines, by implanting ever more technology in ourselves until the difference becomes a fuzzy gray area rather than a line.
almost anything is possible but probability is a much better guideline.
Hard to predict the future is, always in motion...:)
if the future is always in motion then it's running in place because humanity is very predictable. if you look at the past, hundreds or thousands of years we keep making the same mistakes over and over again. while we are advancing technologically and intellectually to a degree, we are not advancing emotionally. before you say it, i assure you, everyone will resist someone who is trying to change their fundamental identities. it will be millions of years before we evolve (if we dont destroy ourselves) and there is no saying if it will be for the better.
overall, i dont think you realize how shitty things always have been and why it's not improving. "History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives."
i have enough win boxes i need to tweak on a daily basis just to get them to act like a computer. now some newb decides he's gonna turn my iptables into roadkill?
sure i'll tear out my video card, fork over cash and put in a better supported one but which is best supported now?! they improved the Intel, AMD and NVidia video card drivers! dammit, cant they just improve one video card driver at a time?!
thanks for not actually reading my post and asking the same questions because it makes them all that more interesting. -_-
Are you suggesting that we'll "never" have computers that can program themselves? That can improve and change their own code?
"chances are we're going to wipe ourselves out before that"
The minute a computer can adjust its own code, all the kill switches in the world won't help.
"all military bots have a remote kill switch.that is independent of software"
Here is a question... If a computer ever becomes self-aware, are we prepared to accept it as an equal and recognize that it has the same rights that we have?
"it an interesting situation to consider but chances are we're going to wipe ourselves out before that becomes an issue."
debug it. no seriously, if software/hardware doesn't behave in the expected manner, you figure out why and then you change it to do what you want.
And what happens when the AI says "no" to that?
all military bots have a remote kill switch.that is independent of software because bad programming can lead to really bad circumstances (which has happened). besides, do you really think we would program in a sense or morality, ethics or desire into a military robot? it will have directives and objectives to follow and without motivation, the robot has no reason to disobey them. just like humans, we dont want soldiers that think or act on their own agenda. if any robot is going to turn on us by it's own accord, it wont be a military robot.
you can invent all the scenarios you want but the truth is that we have dealt with this issue before in humans but it will be worse for robots because their is no consideration for their "life".
it an interesting situation to consider but chances are we're going to wipe ourselves out before that becomes an issue.
"YOU MUST USE OUR EMAIL SYSTEM! We promise we wont read your email. You trust us, right?"
two rules
1) never trust an employer unless you trust everyone in the entire company, including HR.
2) never trust HR.
when non-engineers that dont understand technology but make engineering decisions, shit like this happens.
shocker.
that makes me ponder, were these cuts accidental or red herrings?

everything is suspicious now :((((
On a side note, I can't believe this is on /. Phoronix? Yes, because its a worthless gossip rag.
Even worse, it's hidden in the root directory. Come on, who does that?!

considering ARM is a fabless IC designer, i dont think they are going to jump on this offer.

Ah so is this the "super AIDS" I've heard so much about?
no, that's Windows 8.1
you can revisit those those nostalgic 8MB and 4MB days again with the latest AMD chips as L2 cache. :)
just use a modifide version coreboot to bypass those silly POST tests and load to the CPU cache directly with Windows 3.11 :)

when are our politicians going to man up and actually do the right thing?
Is that the same Washington Post that's owned by Jeff "One Click" Bezos?
it's only his because he accidently bought it with one click.
What iconography would you suggest replace the floppy disk for save?
<Bob> DAMMIT! Where is the save button?!
<Jake> Click the Jesus button.
<Bob> Huh?
<Jake> Jesus saves.

just fyi, the improper use of words and the lack of an [edit post] button is part of the dystopian present.

welcome to the dystopian present.

will these first world problems never end?!
What precisely are you afraid of?
I'm sorry, but that's none of your business.
that's fine. we already know.
how does the heat dissipation compare to said to-be-replaced lithium batteries?
all the same, it's good to see progress in the energy storage field.
