  1. Very important due to legal issues on Securing IM and P2P Applications · · Score: 0

This is very important to keep productivity up and to keep illegal music from being shared on the network. A lot of illegal filesharing occurs on the faster corprate networks instead of the slower home networks. This will also be a barrier against viruses, porn, etc. BTW first post

  2. Re:Computers are powerhogs on A Kilowatt of Power · · Score: 0

Yes, and think how many people are going to call tech support over blown fuses when these power supplies get into the mainstream. If I start buliding custom systems as a business I would be using larger power supplies than the name brands to begin with, I don't want to be answering the above said blown fuse calls when 600-1000 watt power supplies become common usage in my PCs.

  3. Sometimes it does on Does Faster Broadband Matter? · · Score: 0

Yes, faster broadband is sometimes necessary. This is when you need to use VoIP or to download movies and other large files. A typical movie on a P2P network is around 700 MB and is estimated to take 6-9 hours on my DSL. Symetrical connections do need to become cheaper, but most people do not need the higher speed for uploads. It is important to note that ISPs can be a little generous on bandwidth. My 512k/128k is 576k/160k as indicated by the modem/router.

  5. I'm not too bad on Are Americans Addicted to Technology? · · Score: 1

Every year since 2000, I have broken my addiction cycle somewhat during the summer, 2004-2005 have been the worst. I go up to a campground every summer and spend the summer. In 2004 a management change forced us to change plans and 2005 I had more gadgets (and time to play video games). The reason I say broken somewhat, is I change from computers and Internet to Video games. This year was the worst. I had my personal laptop, I did not use it everyday (don't ask me to do the same with my desktop at home). I also had my MP3 and digital camera, but I did not use these too frequently. I did however put some decent hours into my friend's PS2, but I was spending time with him, but he put decent hours on his iPod too. I am a techo geek, I can't totally stop using high-tech stuff, but I can shift to what my environment allows. Here is an example of the two environments I have. Home: -Full AC Power -Full Phone service (landline and cellular) -Internet (DSL as of November 2005) -Full power Desktop PC (crap to most of you, I will won't list specs as it will be off topic) -Cable TV -Sewer Connected Toilet System Campground: -Limited AC Power (30 AMP 120VAC for everything 3.6 KW MAX) -Poor Phone Service (Pay Phone, POOR Digital Cell Service) -WAP on Cell Use/another computer with Cable -PIII laptop -OTA TV (analog) -Toilet with holding tank / Full service (shower included) public Restroom -(2005) Friend living in full time (except for time at dad's) -(1999-Present) NES, Sega Genesis -(1998-2001) Game Boy -(2001) Game Boy Color -(2002-Present) Game Boy Advance -(2003-Present) N64, NEC Turbo Grafix -(2004-Present) SNES

  6. Those idiots are up to their crap again on Digital Content Security Act · · Score: 1

DRM on audio CDs, no problem download my music anyway; Content scrambling on DVDs, fine can be bypassed; DRM on broadcasts, I think the movie industry is still pissed from 1984. A law is not needed as analog copy protection exists and works on all video devices by default (except beta). It is macrovision, this technology was around for a long time. Macrovision has not been used in broadcasts as it is expensive to license and could be bypassed easily. Piracy will continue and will get even worse. This will not be as bad IF it did not have restrictions on time shifting. Better yet use technology (and an appropiate US Law) to enforce an unenforced UK law that mandates that all TV recordins must be erased within 28 days and signal it supersonically in the audio portion with the time and date broadcast and time and date it must be erased (if longer than 28, less than 28 days will be considered a transmission error). If an expired file is played the DVR (or PC) will reject if being input or delete if stored.

  7. Still better than WD on Seagate buys Maxtor for $1.9B · · Score: 1

I don't know much about the manufacture of hard drive other than they have to be clean and sealed from dirt. I had a WD drive fail yesterday, luckily I was only playing around with it. After I removed it, I removed a small round piece of metal tape from the side of the drive and it exposed the platters! I knew that WD drives were junk, I did not know that they were S***. To Stay on topic, I hope that Seagate will improve the Maxtor drives, as I only had one seagate drive fail on me (it was older than I was at the time) and it was a 20MB MFM drive. I only trust seagate drives, although my notebook has an IBM that has not failed yet knock on wood.

  8. Why put the law into this? on Illinois Videogame Law Struck Down · · Score: 1

The law does not need to be put into it. If the parents don't monitor the minor's activities it is their own fault. My parents were strict when I was under 18 (and still am since I live at home). I was not allowed to watch "South Park," Look at porn on the Internet, stay up after 9 PM on a school night, etc. While my parents were conservitive on this, they allowed me to do other things, such as play "Grand Theft Auto" and so on. It is the parent's job to regulate, if they choose not to do so, don't make them. If they let their minor buy an M rated game, why should they be required to go to the store to buy it with them.

While most ads are annoying, Google's ads are helpful. When I am looking for something online, usually just browsing though, I can click on a Google ad and off I go. What is wrong with the blink tag?

  10. A radio is cheaper on Driving Away Teens With High Frequency Noise · · Score: 1

When I was about 16 (I'm 19 now), there were some kids in the campground I camp in that I was not allowed to be around. When I wanted to use the playground to be with my friends (it is the only common area that was close to my camper), I simply pulled out an AM radio (dating myself here) and turned it to the local 50's/60's station, if that was off air for the evening, I tried to get WKBW out of Bufflo, NY. I love that kind of music, but they don't. Another idea is if the kids are acting all Gansta (rap language I don't understand) switch to a country station, they hate that. Be sure to stay within local noise laws otherwise, they will call the cops on you.
