  1. another review on Daikatana Sucks: It's Official · · Score: 5

Lowtax at Something Awful has an even funnier look at Daikatana and the release. it's utterly hilarious. you thought the sharky extreme review was mean, i don't know how Romero can look at his face in the morning after this review. ouch...but for some real comedy, read Lowtax's reviews of The War In Heaven or Thundra.

we need someone with some power to stand up against the DVD "elite" (more likely, seeing the DeCSS code, the DVD l33t). After i read this article and the essays on OpenDVD.org i got sick to my stomach. We think Microsoft is screwing consumers (because they are), but look ot the MPAA and the DVD Consortium. they are terrible. the region code idea is monopolistic, the second-rate scrambling system sucks (but we're not allowed to do anything about it), and now we find out that the video signal is messed up in some way "to prevent copying," making the picture quality way less than what it should be. they are allowed to continue this reign of terror under the guise of *copyright*. give me a break. i've stuck with my trusty VCR for 10 years now, and it looks like i will not touch DVD unless one lands on my lap. thank God for LiViD. otherwise i would hate it even more than i do. this is a key example of a technology that could have revolutionized at least something, but instead being held back to its toddler years by greedy corporate-types. blah.

IMHO, education will come with time. At first, it took a certain amount of skill to operate a TV remote or a radio. But these have gotten simpler with time. now everyone knows how to do them, and tvs and radios' user interfaces have been simplified over time. the troubles that plagued tv (bad reception, poor picture) have in a lot of ways been remedied. the internet is a semi-new technology, commercially only five or so years old (scientifically much older, but wasn't 1995 the boom year?). give the people working on making it better some time to make it ubiquitous, and then it will seem like driving a car. it takes a little to learn, but it's a needed skill.

well-it's out. 700MHz isn't really going to turn that many heads, though, now that people get glassy eyes when they hear 1GHz. but it's really not fair to compare the two. the fastest UltraSPARC right now is what, 440MHz? again, it's not fair to compare that to a GHz p3. I think Intel and Sun's marketing departments need to make the distinction clear between their processors. I have seen people compare my 400MHz Ultra 10 at school by saying "oh, it's only 400mhz. i have a celeron 450, how much better is it than that sun?" now we all know that a 400MHz UltraSPARC flies. it's an incredibly fast processor. as such, sun is justified for charging enormous amounts. it's not the megahertz that matter. as such, i still wonder why intel would flaunt the fact that the new xeon is 700MHz, but yet advertise their GHz pentium. i say long live the 200mhz pentium pro.

I'm all for them staying in the PC market-FreeBSD is as solid of a server OS as you'll find anywhere. but...i'm not them.
