... it was about clans, professionals, and media whores. (Media whores come in both genders and don't have to be sexual. Some people will do anything for attention.)
What percentage of female gamers belong to any sort of 'clan' and have ANY connection to what they were talking about?
For that matter, what percentage of MALE gamers belong to a clan or play professionally?
Sure, maybe professional female gamers are a bit of a joke - but there's a case to be made that ALL professional gamers are a bit of a joke. It's not exactly a recognised sport yet.:)
Mediawhoring to make money has nothing to do with gaming. Most people who play games don't get articles written about them or their pictures published.
I resent the discussion acting like the loud-and-out-there dolls are the only female gamers in the world up until the last page, when they vaguely mentioned that "Oh yeah, and some people just play the games and don't make such a huge deal about it.":)
Of course, that indie niche does better if you remember not to mock them for their lack of enormous budgets, and encourage your friends to do the same...:)
It's very tiring to see people spend all the money they had to finance their dream game and then have that product mocked everywhere because their budget was a few thousand rather than a few million. (Note - I don't mean me. I have *NOT* yet spent a few thousand on graphics!)
I'm not talking about indie games with actual BAD graphics. I'm just talking about those who bitch "Oh god, that looks SO five years ago. I would never pay for that." at games whose graphics are attractive and useful but not hugely flashy. If you've ever said this, you are part of the problem.:)
Yeah, but it sucked, and their original excuse for this was that the single-player campaign was meant to be nothing but a demo for the toolkit and the online possibilities.:)
While adventure games have been considered a "dead genre" for years, there are actually MORE of them being released to the mainstream currently than there are single-player RPGs!
It's a shift in the market. As the adventure fans come to recognise that they are no longer considered a hot property, they also become more willing to accept ANY adventure game that comes along, and thus it becomes easier for extremely small studios on a low-budget to make an adventure game and get it published for retail. These adventure games don't get the huge marketing push of the 'hot' genres, but they are out there. Check Gamespot - you'll find several reviews of recent adventure games. Every single review will include the phrase "Adventures are a dead genre". Despite the fact that, y'know, the game is right there and they are playing it.:)
So yes. There is a lack of single-player RPG goodness on the shelves. If it persists, expect the independents to eventually pick it up, just as they have with adventure games. *Especially* as better rpg toolkits become available. RPG Maker XP has already produced at least one English PC game on sale...
Setting the strategy and watching rather than button-pounding is something I've been wishing more RPGs would do for AGES.
Some of us have RSI and don't like doing pointless repetitive things.
Hearing about this new battle style makes me want to play the game even though I lack a console...
.... I was always told it was a mistranslation of Ultimate, picked out of the list of thesaurus options because 'Final Fantasy' was more alliterative.
Engrish. You know.
If that's correct, it's really Ultimate Fantasy, which explains the generic-ness and the lack of connection between plots.:)
Where are the adult games?
BEING IGNORED.;)
Who wants to bet this conference only invites the GTA guys and completely ignores everyone who actually IS making adult games?
Now obviously, hentai isn't to everyone's taste - some people do not find anime sexually appealing. But they very much exist and are sold... not nearly as much as in Japan, but that's because the vast majority of stores absolutely refuse to carry them.
I didn't even read TFA in this case, being fed up with all the girls-in-gaming crap that gets posted here.:)
Still, it wasn't an original article, it was a response to an article that *was* written by a man being silly. Most articles about women in gaming are not written by women, and have been known to twist women's words to fit their preconceived notions (the Hot Coffee incident that was reported on slashdot, where the article author blatantly lied about what the woman whose name he used said.)
As for posting links... slashdot *really* isn't my audience.:) Unless there's a secret cadre of teenage girls reading these comments that I don't know about. Not that ALL of my buyers are giggly teenage girls.... but an awful lot of them are!
Yes. And we female game designers ARE out making our own games and not writing these stupid articles. In fact, we're being ignored by the MEN who write these stupid articles, because they just want to make up some hand-wringing about the poor oppressed women so they sound all supportive and PC. They don't give a damn about what women ACTUALLY want or what women ARE actually doing.
- Insanely girly game designer.
Yes, we've heard it all before. I'm even getting tired of trotting out my usual response - that there ARE styles of games that women play equally or even in the majority, and that there ARE women game designers.
Guess what?
THE MEDIA PREFERS TO LIE.
They would much rather write their whiny stories about women in gaming than look at the truth. And you keep pandering to it by posting them.
It's really quite amazing how dead-set people are in trying to make women into second-class citizens and make a story out of it. In an odd coincidence - or not - one very popular genre with women is the adventure game. The genre that keeps releasing new games steadily, and yet EVERY SINGLE GAME MAGAZINE that reviews them prefaces that review with

There will always be room for the indie niche.

... are we far enough down the threadlist for me to stick an affiliate link in without feeling guilty? Yes, I think we are. :)
I'm talking about Aveyond.

She doesn't have a retail deal yet, but you can find the game in several places round the net.

Dude, ALL politicians lie their asses off. The differences come in WHAT they're lying about, and what they do when you catch them. :)

Just like "there are no women in gaming".
