    No, by doubling the number of wires, the noise gets reduced so the cable can run at ATA-66 and up.

    An 80-connector cable is used to enable ATA-66 and over, with a 40-connector cable you're limited to ATA-33. It has nothing to do with the number of devices on the bus.

    (I haven't read the book, but I'm familiar with the concept of a ringworld, and I'd like to stay unfamiliar with the concept of awful sex scenes ;-) )

    Make it pop up a dialog box with a form where the user can enter his name, address, telephone number to receive a free DVD or something.

    Then call him to verify that information, and when it is verified, tell him that you're calling the police if he doesn't return your computer immediately.

    Very funny, but in practice, it's not feasible, since you'd have to know in advance which emails are safe to click on in the list.

    But that such a ridiculous solution actually gets suggested, it is on the level of MS' recommendation that IE users type in every URL they want to visit!

    Yes, it is (or should be) common knowledge that IE can be persuaded by webpages to download and execute binaries.
