While we may be "in a time of war", we are not AT war. The President did not declare war. Said non-declaration (having never existed) was not ratified by Congress.
Exactly! Unfortunately, the "in a time of war" is being used as a rational for many of this shit that's going on.
I'm sure that Bush will be using/used that phrase tonight.
I'd like to also add - [not shooting] like many other countries in this world. Even in troubled times like these, I really appreciate our Founding Fathers for their foresight in creating our governmental system. So that these issues can be solved without the violence that we see so often on our news screens.
that we're in a "time of war" and the Executive branch is grabbing plenty of power. I don't know what ATT had to go through with the Feds. But please remember, when someone comes knock'in at your door with GUNS, you kinda let'em have their way.
Then again, they're a big corp, and as such a big bureaucracy, they have absolutley no concern for their customers. Bureaucrats follow the rules without question. And ATT, being a bureaucratic organization, will follow those rules - without question.
got your drift, because it took me a while to get it. Yeah, I'm slow. Well, let me check: I think you mean is that there's too many laws legislating things that probably shouldn't be in the relm law. Correct?
I kind of wish folks would have more the attitude of "don't fuck with me and I won't fuck with you!". But instead, there's too many folks all out to legislate morality, their belief system, and anything else that they think the Government should pass a law against. Instead of minding their own business, they want to tell others how and who to have sex with, or some such other nonsense.
Oh, and our tax system! Oooo, there's an abuse of Government there! So much for "due process" - Nope, you owe taxes, you don't pay, we take your propert! Good luck in winning in court.
"if you're doing nothing wrong, then you have nothing to worry about" mentality. I have heard this come out some relatively educated people's (college) mouths. Unfortunately, a lot of people have complete trust in the Government (US Citizens) and they don't remember the abuses of Gov. power in the past: McCarthy (sp?), Hoover and the FBI, Nixon, etc... Nor do they remember abuses of Government power by other Governments.
It's kind of sad. I once had a Biz Law class and when the prof (JD) asked the class if the folks who are arrested for "terrorism" deserve due process, the only people who raised their hands were the Naturalized citizens and me - born 'N raised AMerican - Fuck Yeah! The prof asked the few who raised their hands what their background was - that's how we knew they were naturalized. Sad.
The Paris-based World Association of Newspapers, whose members include dozens of national newspaper trade bodies, said it is exploring ways to "challenge the exploitation of content by search engines without fair compensation to copyright owners."
I'll rmember that the next time I see an article in their papers that's almost verbatim to the Reuters or AP wire feed.
but the fact that their employees feel safe enough to criticise them says something.
FTFB: But, the behavior of my company in this instance is not right.
Either Scoble is very important to MS, or MS tolerates that from their employees. Beleive it or not, I've been at companies that would NOT have tolerated that kind of outspokeness from one of their employees. Or, Scoble, is now looking for a job.
Afterall there's no chance they'll kill some animal in some cold place and put one of their interns in it over night. That would be pretty cruel taking into account that it's just done "to be sure"...
You mean would be cruel to the animal. The intern, on the other hand, well, they're interns!
But, I think C++ would be a better choice. Not that it's superior, but because so many other languages are insprired by it, like Java. I tell you, by knowing C++, picking up the current generation of languages was pretty easy.
The other thing about getting to really know C,C++ is that you can follow system code whenever you have to look at it.
Of course, all the above is just my opinion and based on the current available languages.
They're filtering English mispellings, but what about French, Spanish, or German? A Chinese person could just search for what they're looking for under different languages. Granted, English is taught in China in their schools to everyone, but the folks who know other languages can start getting things and spreading it to the others.
nor do I condone such behavior from my staff, myself, or anyone. This was done by some rogue elements that were too aggressive in their desire to set the facts straight. There will be a thorough investigation into this matter and the appropriate action will be taken.
Did you ever consider that there MAY BE OTHER FACTORS INVOLVED?
There's also emotional factors: A LOT of people eat because of stress, sadness, etc... I've heard a few times from people that they gained weight when they got "this stressful job." And sure, there's a genetic component. But unfortunately, I have NEVER heard a person say, "Yeah, I've gained weight since getting this stressful job. I've started exercising less, eating less healthily, and I'm just getting older: it's a bunch of things contributing to my weight gain." Noooo, it's always boiled down to one thing, usually something that they would have no control over so that they don't have to take responsibility. Even if you're cursed with horrible genes and you gain weight by breathing (like me), you learn to deal with it. Ok, Me, myself, and I have to make some lifestyle changes to compensate for the inevetable changes in life and my own challenges.
If someone tells me that they're gaining weight and it's hard. I empathize. If they just say, "Oh it's my genes - pass the Twinkies." I'll just shake my head and turn a deaf ear to their complaints about this society being prejudiced against fat people.
Visual Age IDE for C++, Java. There was some other things too, IIRC. It was in the late 90's that they had this stuff up there. I can't find them anymore.
Yes, we take risks, but we have to decide where to draw the line between mitigating them and inconveniencing ourselves. I don't believe it's an issue of whether to draw that line but actually where to draw it.
The thing is that we're, as a society, so concerned with risks that are quite rare and completely oblivious to risks that are not so rare - heart disease, lung disease, etc.... The odds are we'll die or, worse from my perspective, become disabled from one of those diseases; which can be mitigated with diet and exercise.
I actually know some folks in health who actually think that McDonald's, Coke, etcc.. should be restricted because of their impact on pulbic health. That's how overboard people are willing to go to keep us safe. I resent that I would get a $50 ticket for not having my seatbelt becuase "it's for my safety". That's true, but that's my problem and my families. Having laws and using police to act like my mommy is a complete waste.
As far a airport security, I'd rather have none. We don't need it. One, it's not that effective, and two, if anyone actually tried anything, they'd get their asses kicked - see Richard Reid. In the meantime, my civil liberties have had one more chip taken out of them.
I gues that's where you and I will disagree - I'd rather err on recklessness.
...customers express a strong interest in only buying american products supported by american citizens (they haven't, see the auto industry)
It's getting harder and harder to find anything these days that are "American Made". Even the stuff assembled here in the US have many (usually the majority) parts that are made overseas. Some, such as power tools, are manufactured and assembled overseas. They're American in name only. Some of those overseas companies will actally manufacter items for a firms competition. The world of off-shoring - got to love it!
I'm against GM food but I'm all for genetically modifying humnity. The human race is so pathetic that we need to improve ourselves anyway we can.
And, I'd be more than happy to volunteer to be the poster boy for the reasons to GM humans.

Ok, mod me sappy!
I think that it's great that this being settled peaceably in a court of law and NOT with a bunch of people running around shooting each other!
Then again, they're a big corp, and as such a big bureaucracy, they have absolutley no concern for their customers. Bureaucrats follow the rules without question. And ATT, being a bureaucratic organization, will follow those rules - without question.
Now the cops will be more embolden to ask, "Papers please!"
If that's part of the deal, then I stand corrected.
I don't which is sadder: his comment or the fact that he was modded to +5.

They plugged /. on PBS: News Hour with Jim Lehrer the other night when discussing the NY Times bringing their site down for a couple days.
Man, their spokesperson really needs a make-over, too! It was Goth meets Suzy Orman!

Fucking hypocrites.

That explains why I had to take a shower everytime I wrote VB.Net Apps! fWhew! i thought I was going crazy!!!

I forgot /. scripts will automtically put a link in if you have "http://blah-blah.com" in your post.
FTFA: One can set a cookie for ".com.", then bounce the visitor to http://www.victim.com./ .
I'm thinking plugins like the one I mentioned would help a user from getting screwed like this. I'd be curious as to other methods.
What? RTFA? Huh, you're new here.
Anyway, where was I, oh yeah, Stars and their divorce rate...
