Then you don't want to read about the equally stupid things people did to themselves in past ages.

This would, of course, include some of the very same body piercing that certain people are doing today, except that where we're using surgical steel now they used bone and wood back then.

I mentioned Mac OS X at the top because there you have the prime example of selling a stripped kernel (compared to a usual Linux kernel) and then make you pay for obvious features (whaaat? you want cross-platform networking? pay!).

Can you give one example of this, having to pay for "cross-platform networking" (and also an explanation of what you actually mean by this). Have you ever actually used OS X?

Keeping to the original point, note that every OS X system includes, for no extra cost, a number of standard Unix shells and not only gcc but Xcode.

Anyway, I agree with the original post. AOL still ships CDs, of course, but that's because you need their client software to use their service. When was the last time you received an installation CD for a standard internet service provider?

I worked for Earthlink in the '90s and we used to ship every new account a CD with Netscape, among other things (a free FTP client, maybe? I don't remember), and an installer that configured a dialup connection for them. This was the norm at the time.

You must be, you named your application after it.

Since I've never spoken to the developer of any other php* app, let me ask you something: Why on earth did you name your software after the language you wrote it in? What happens if you later decide to port your app to Perl or Ruby?

This is common for PHP devs for some reason, yet you never see it anywhere else. I heard Rasmus Lerdof speak a few years ago and he expressed his puzzlement (and annoyance) at this phenomenon.
