How is it that they get 1 million kilowatt hours to be 1 gigawatt hours? Last time I checked then 1 million was 1 giga and that should then be 1 giga kilowatt hours or 1 terawatt hours.

But I would go with the first digit there and forgett their conversion to kilowatt hours.

Well, I see this much more as an opportunity then anything else, some buisnesses should just get into the band wagon and supply what other buisnesses need, isnt that what the free market is all about?

On another note, isn't this comparable to the free gifts that pharmacutical companies give doctors on their conferences. It is just that this doesn't have the obvious connection to peoples health and well being and perhaps is a bit smaller in scope. A bit far fetched perhaps but the same principle or what?

Apparantly the italians think there is a new kind of light out there instead of a "new" kind of diode, an organic light!

I share an office here at uni with an italian and he was telling me about an italian news paper that was covering this story. There they didn't say the diode was organic, but the light was organic! I wonder how the reporter who wrote that piece thought they produced organic light :-)

We did a similar thing in one experiment at Niels Bohr Institute, we were making a single photon experiment and had a very sensitive avalanche photon detector that would be destroyed if it got to many photons. So how to make a pretty fast way of knowing if it was getting saturated? Use sound of course :-)
We just fed the number of photons/sec to the sound device and when it was getting close to saturation the pitch of the sound would be really high and we would pull the plug on the APD, pretty neat solution I think (complements to our Post-Doc).

Nothing to do with the topic on hand but just wanted to share an interesting solution to a practical problem in a physics lab :-)

  14. Mistake that Bush Made on Hyperreality: The U.S-China Standoff · · Score: 1

Now Bush is a newcomer in international politics and he made one beginners mistake in dealing with this situation. He "demanded" the return of the plane and the crew of the plane immediately. Now that is going on the offensive before there is anything to go on the offensive about. What he should have done was show some regret that this incident happend and that the US should have offered their full support in getting to the bottom of what happened and be a little bit more patient then he was. That is what Bush should appologise for at the moment, I agree that he should not appologise for the run in itself but rather his reactions to it. Hope this gives a little bit of a different insight. Cheers

    Umm...how about fusion for example?
The major thing I see that is stalling us from getting into space is how much it costs and the proper fule to do it. With fusion you can produce energy fairly cheap and (hopefully) get a lot of energy from a small amount of matter. I think that most of NASA's funding should be put into fusion research for a few years.
