Maybe that's the same thing all the other suckers are thinking when they buy spam promoted stocks.
Exactly, But I'm saying that you need to get spammed first and act faster than everybody else. People later in this topic say they have bought stock from spam tips and it did ok 'cos the sheep' were following.... i'm saying you just need to be the first sheep.
I am loathed to pay money for a license for such a small part of the system when so many people have donated their time to build the rest of the system.
I'm with you. Why should proprietry 'infect' FOSS? - To me, this is just big companies attempt to promote their codec for $$. I'm all for people making money, but I'm also for open (non-proprietry) formats.
There are quite a few 'non proprietry' codecs out there (OGG etc), and some have performace that exceeds the proprietry formats and I'd rather see these used widely
/.'ers have commented that we need to adopt proprietry codecs if we want to add third party devices, play DVD's etc, but I think it's the manufactures not supporting open formats that are really to blame.
It usually boils down to "if its free, it cant be any good" - so an mp3 must be better than OGG, right? Heck, I'll sell you some pretty expensive and really awesome air.
At first I thought "who are these stupid people buying stock from spammed tips?", but then I figured as long as you are one of the first to buy - you will gain almost as much on the stock as the spammer, without having spammed anyone.
I guess the trick is to get onto a spam list that has the largest effect on the market (the widest distribution?), and get in early (perhaps many many e-mail addresses?) and try to be at the start of the spam list (perhaps addresses aaaaaaa@mail.com, zzzzzzz@mail.com etc).
As long as you get in early on stock being manipulated, and your not the one doing the spamming, your less guilty than the spammer and there is a slightly better chance you'll get away with it....
Selling a pirated copy of software is a criminal offence... Ok. got that bit
Giving away software (file sharing) is not a criminal offence, but an infringement of someone's copyright; therefore they can sue you in a civil suit.
You can go to jail with a criminal offence but you do not be jailed for losing a civil suit. (you are usually ordered to pay money to the copyright holder.
There are maximum (financial) penalties in place for the criminal offence, but not the civil suit, (but you can go to jail).
Question: Have I got that right, and can you be sued for copyright infringement after your criminal case for selling it?
When was the last time a patent expired and became open domain. It seems the lawyers find a way to keep extending the patent period, thus undermining the intent of the patent system!
Are you implying internet traffic is unreliable now, and will be 'cured' by a non-neutral net?
The only reason I can see the internet traffic being unreliable is because the ISP's sell more bandwidth than they actually have. Now that people use the bandwidth they paid for, the ISP's infrastructure is strained and they need a way out. Its a choice of upgrading their infrastructure, or somehow forcing people to use less, or prioritizing "important" traffic.... They are too cheap to do the first cos it will dig into profits, they will have trouble doing the second cos they cant control the masses, and so the only viable option is the third, and if they do it right, they can charge more!!
If my memory serves me correctly the behaviour is exactly there now. I vaugly remember my network protocol class lecturer saying that the TCP/IP has a priority flag within it, and he said to never set it to anything other than 'high', otherwise your traffic will not get through as most network routers are set to drop low-priority traffic.
So IMO, if we 'lose' net neutrality, you either have to pay the high price for all your traffic, or your stuffed. But the IPS's know this, and that is exactly their model.
one question for the non-neutral fanboys: If the 'tubes' are already "strained", how will a non-neutral net give you better service??!!
I heard someone was developing a Firefox plugin that could detect a 'non-neutral' connection. Once it hits mainstream, providers would probably be reluctant to slow down some 'tubes' for mass phonecalls to tech-support or customer migration to another provider etc.
I would have thought there are enough viruses (malware, trojans etc) in circulation to sufficiently test software to a high degree of confidence. Existing viruses are extremely diverse with many having had significant resources used in their development.
With this team are trying identify an exploit that a future virus might use, they are essentially trying to predict the future. What if the Black Hat uses a slightly different approach that ends up undetected. Does this not make their time worthless?
This is like creating a range of new biological diseases on the off chance one develops independently and starts to harm people.
I believe the money would be better spent training developers to (try to) 'think like black-hats' where every step of their development they focus on 'how could this be exploited' and 'what can I do to prevent it'.
All I have to say is... you hit the nail on the head. The Govt sold it, the media bought it and are now feeding it to us through a rectal tube. There are so many obvious miss-truths and missleading statements in the media, it makes me sick. Good article. You should be writing for the Times.
ere was the typical scaremongering, with the implication that people who needed to call 911 couldn't if they were relying on VOIP, while AT&T customers were "safe" because AT&T has generators at the switching stations.
.. and all they had to say was "VOIP is the chosen carrier of Al Queda...", or "if you use VOIP, the terrorists will win"
Did they get a tax break for helping rebuild ? I'm sure nation will be wondering why the people of New Orleans are still poor 5 years down track, while large corporations say "bbbut we invested billions, we cant understand why they are still poor"... etc. Is the Billions of Telco money going to create jobs and wealth, or just fleece the locals for wi-fi instead?
Why? are you building a quantum computer? Cos you have to understand that you are going to get all possible combinations of ever possible answer to every question you didnt ask, at once. And nothing that comes out of it will make sense...
I'm buying one of these tools and super-gluing it to my TV B Gone. Then I'm going to walk into CNN headquarters and completely change the way America gets her news.
Stopping Government propaganda in this manner would certainly be an act of terrorism.
It is because its heading toward a black hole.....but why has no-one seen it? I'll ask Holly. Holly, why has no one noticed that Voyager is heading into a black hole?
Holly: Well, the thing about a black hole - it's main distinguishing feature - is it's black. And the thing about space, the color of space, your basic space color - is it's black. So how are you supposed to see them?
I'd also include in his copy, a very long 'standard looking' EULA that includes somewhere about the 3/4 mark: "by clicking Accept, you are agreeing that you will not sue the makers of this game for its contents... etc...etc......"
I had to read your post a couple of times to get what you were saying. At first I thought you were advocating "stand up to bully" violence, but after a re-read, you say discipline your kids for fighting (no matter which one started from the postion of power). I agree that the answer to kids being bullied is not to be 'coddled' - 100%. But standing up to bullies is sometimes what they are after. I moved from NZ to Northern Ireland when I was 12, and because I was 'foreign' became the target of a few of a couple of the school bullies. I pretty much always managed to talk my way out of it. It'd have been a pretty dangerous situation for me to 'stand up to them directly'... most of these guys were pig farmers and victims of home violence. No punch I could deliver was even going to make them wince, and they could easily gather more friends than I had made in the first month or so. So, I had to use quick thinking, even quicker talking and a little avoidance here and there. In the end I got these guys working for me. I started selling potatoe chips (crisps) at school, undercutting the cafeteria and these guys were doing the leg-work and chasing up the outstanding debts.... win win. They just needed a bit of guidance and a little 'motivation'....
True. I spent so many years playing PacMan, that I have absolutly no problem running around in a darkened room, listening to highly repetitive music and chomping down pills.
u'm no. If you read the about the first 20 posts there are quite a few saying violence can solve all problems.... I strongly disagree with there perspective, but i'm just telling you what they are a sayin'. (And much to my disgust many of these comments were marked insightful.)

Name me one time violence DIDN'T solve a problem. You might not like the solution, but violence does solve problems. Just look at American history and count how many times violence solved the problem of the day.

Amen! These anti-war hippies annoy the piss out of me. War can solve just as many problems as it creates. Its just a matter of just application of force in the name of a just cause. Who defines just? You do. Violence is a tool, a very powerful tool. Responsible use of said tool will yeild impressive results.
