You could have figured out how much bandwidth you don't have by posting a link to your local server. Being Slashdotted would've shown your ISP you need more bandwith!
Then; Take the number of connections at your end before your connection was severed, and add that to 'half' the number of connections when your ISP's server/connection maxed out, multiply by the number of toilets in your office, and divide by Pi.
and that my friend, is why the capture should require the user to post on Slashdot and get modded 'insightful'. Only then would they then be granted access.... Sadly, I'd be left on the street along with all the first posters...
I lived in Northern Ireland during my teenage years, and know plenty first hand about the 'troubles'. And the parent is right "Anyone who thinks that the Troubles was a religious conflict is demonstrating a complete lack of knowledge of the area
Absolutely correct. The problems are over territory, and the people 'just happen' to be of different religious backgrounds....
I'd like to see the TSA try to filter all the Catholics out of the line... or wind the clock back to the 80's to find all the 'commies'...
'If you can convince some idiot to give you their chips if you promise to give them more chips later.....
You raise a good point. If someone falls for a dumb arse scam in the virtual world, does that make them likley to fall for one in the real world? - probably. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.... Probably unfair: The people that lost the money should really take responsibility for their stupidity - and not try to sue their way out of shame.. YOU FELL FOR A SCAM, GET OVER IT!!!
BTW, If any of the people that lost money in EVE are reading this and want to get their money back, they can send $50 US Dollars and I'll get them their in-game credits back, plus their real money back with interest! Or, I if you really want, I can hook you up with a Nigerian prince friend of mine who has money locked in a foreign account. We just need $100,000 to get it out... perhaps you can help? We need your in-game skills.....
Does TiVo 'Zap' Ads? Does it actually skip the whole section of ads with one click and no further interaction? I dont have a tivo, but I thought it ony fast fowarded them. I have a mythtv and that can skip the entire ads and detects the end of the advertising segment where the show starts again, but didnt think TiVo did this. - Anyone?
>>As a law-abiding student, I really have no qualms with this unless the government decides to start going after law-abiding students.
Just say, in a few years time you go to run for elected office. Would you be comfortable if your oponnent had this information? Every Form you had ever filled out? What if there was a spelling mistake on an application and your oponnent accused you of fraud? What level privacy are you NOT willing to have?
doesnt the amount of free space in the 'non-hidden' part, vs the total drive capacity not match? I'm sure when i open a 'non-hidden' true crypt partition it shows me less and less as the 'hidden partition' become full of...... ahem, my wedding video...
You give a link to the Miller test. The Miller test is based on the "average person" finding something prurient/dodgy/racey.. The only problem is, the "average person" is kept in an evacuated glass case in France.... So I'm thinking they are fairly busy.
But seriously, what is considered violent?
A light spanking? (everyone likes a little spank dont they?)
Hair pulling?
Nipple clamps or pegs?
Strange Insertions?
One mans violence is another mans foreplay.....
Im not about to let any copper decide what is dodgy... and I'm off to erase my hard drive, anyone got any good, free, government strength data destruction S/W???
Generally: Both 'Red' and 'Black' carry "classified or sensitive information", the difference is the "Black" information is Encrypted.
TEMPEST standards require "RED/BLACK separation", i.e. maintaining distance or installing shielding between circuits and equipment used to handle classified or sensitive information (red) and normal unsecured circuits and equipment (black), the latter including those carrying encrypted signals.
(bold added by me)
Because the 'black' is encrypted, it is generally considered 'safe' for broadcast or transfer outside the system.
The common exception is power lines. They are typically considered 'black', and testing is done to esure there is no Red information on them. The aim is to ensure no Red (unencrypted) information leaves the facility - at all. Have a read of that PDF I referenced in my (grandparent) post.
That is why, when they ask for my SSN, i say "I don't have one"... They say "huh? *dumbest look on their face*" and I tell them "I was born overseas and do not have one... and you shouln't need it anyway....."... It usually works. I've nearly always had to pay a higher deposit ('cos they cant check my credit), but its a small price to pay to not give my SSN to the library / power company / phone company / old navy / lunchlady...
Effectiveness of devices that can isolate and monitor any given cable line over more than 100 feet falls off dramatically
Unless of course your RED ends up superimposed on the BLACK signal that is intentionally transmitted (say HF or SATCOM). In this case your RED is sitting on-top of the Black for everyone to see - potentially globally, all while comprimizing your (and your allies) crypto....
As far as the non-TEMPEST compliance goes--I don't know. As I understand it, TEMPEST is literally tin-foil hat paranoid, but honestly there's no reason not to use something as simple as shielded cables is that's all that's preventing compliance.
TEMPEST is quite a serious issue. Without going beyond unclass/public domain - It is basically the separation of RED (unencrypted) and Black (encrypted) information - electrically, to ensure no Red information 'leaks out'. (more here)
If you dont meet TEMPEST standards, there is a high chance someone can intercept 'unencrypted' information either within the 'encrypted' information or on its own, or simply 'sense' it on a power line to the building. (also look up Van Eck phreaking) There are a few considerations to help ensure the system will pass a TEMPEST test:
- Proper physical separation of Red and Black.
- Suitable filtering of power supplies.
- Propper shielding (parent got that one)
- Propper termination of shielding into correct EMI Backshells
- Correct assembly and termination of backshells
- More about what I've said Here [PDF]
Basically if you skimp on any of these to save a few dollars (and it aint cheap), the bad guys can intercept your communications (COMINT), which means your likely to get your ass handed to you on a plate...
PS: All of what Ii've said above is unclass and is in the public domain....
I worked for a Goverment Dept that had a similar problem with things going missing - Items were issues to individuals, and when they left they had to hand them back and the losses were accounted. The losses were enormous, and most of the time the employee couldn't be held accountable. (Or We'd say -"go find one", and they would steal someone elses and return that.)
We eventually approached another Govt Dept in a similar line of work, and they had the solution: Issue it, and dont account for it or ask for it back = no lost items!
the energy saved would be enough to power a city of 1.5 million people
one bulb is equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the roads
Once the oil companies get a 'whiff' of these savings... somebody is going to disappear, a company will be purchased, allowing the technology to be discovered 'again' in another 25 years...
30 second annoying junk you have to listen to before the song starts and of course
um, so how does this differ from a radio station? (or radio station broadcast over the net / satellite radio?) Obviously there is an 'on-demand' aspect, but really.
Free music *check*: ads *check*: crappy artists *check*:
If it looks like a duck.... then yeah. its not too much different than radio.
I've actually been listening to the entrepreneur podcasts from the HBS (on itunes - free), and they are quite valuable... some good insite. The biggest thing to remember is that ideas are easy, identifying opportunities and avoiding obsticles is difficult. Some good advice on running with your idea, what the true cost of VC investment is, social engineering (ahem - advertizing), etc... Worth a listen if your even considering going into buisiness (owning your own job), or just want to hear some good vs bad stories.....
Again, your quite right, entrepreneurship comes precisely from not following standard thinking...
I'm with Charter Cable in the DFW area in Texas. Up to now they've been great, but lately my BF2 and CS:S pings to a Dallas server are getting bad. During the day they are 30ms, and at night around 275 which is getting me kicked for lag. Plus my connection speed is only about 3/4 what i'm paying for. I'm about to phone up with a complaint, but wanted to document my problems properly before I did. I just know I'll need about 1 hr free while they make me go through all the BS of checking all my settings etc..
Should I phone the service desk, or write them a letter? What result should I ask for?
