>Linux is ugly. I'm not just talking about the prettiness of the GUI, but the general ugliness of the fonts and text.
I do not agree with what you said. I have a True Type font server on my box, and it is VERY efficient. It's true that out the box, the fonts are shitty, but with this it's awesome.
I think you forgot to tak about Enlightement. I am using it for quite some time now, and believe me... everyone who sees my desktop says "Whooaaa!". You have no idea how many people I know would like to run Linux just because of E.
I agree with what you said about DirectX. I did a car racing game couple of years ago (in Delphi... yeeehhhaa) that was using DirectX, and I was amazed by this library. I am sure it has got a lot better now.
I remember at that time, the only superioty that DOS had was in games. All games where running under DOS. Microsoft found the way to make everybody program for Windows by using DirectX.
There is a question though. The only thing that is common in all Unixes when it comes to GUI is X11. No need to say that is it pretty hard to develop a good game with this toolkit. What do you think wil happen ? A layer on top of X11 bundled into Xfree and its competitors? A separate library that goes deep into the hardware (the kind of lib that detects your hardware at installation time and does the interface for you)? I don't know.
RMS said that developping an assembler was not a lot of fun, but is was needed. I think this kind of lib/interface is needed, even though it's not going to be a lot of fun (because I don't see how one can do it in Perl:-) )
The FBI released binaries of its little detection program for Linux and Solaris ONLY.
And the next day, what do we see? A big assumption.
Since the Linux Myths thing, Microsoft has been pretty silent about Linux. It should remind all of us that there are (still) people up North who don't want to see our OS succeed.
It is always nice to see that company A has bought company B so that company B will do some more for the community (Corel-Borland).
It is awesome to watch company C having a Tux on its home page, and telling everybody that the new top-of-the-range filesystem will be "Liunux-ready" (sgi of course).
It is not a war, it is just competition. We want Free Os's to succeed because we believe they are the best. But remember that they are people who would rather shut our mouths.
When you work for a company whose presence on the Internet is the essential source of revenues. When this company has lots of shareholders and starts getting bigger and bigger...
When do sysadmins have time to apply patches, take the system down for at leat 3 minutes, educate their suppliers on what kind of application they need, etc...
What I am saying is that zero downtime is not a possible thing. Why ? Because when you have some security experience, you know that downtime is better than seeing your credit card numbers on Usenet.
To all the SysAdmins working for a huge ISP, ASP or Big Internet Company, take example on Yahoo!. Downtime is needed, it gives the network some rest (c) (User Friendly I think).
Borland always produced better programming tools than Microsoft. You can take it anyway you want, but a Delphi outperforms any VB and VC++... any day!
Again, this is not a Troll but...
Corel always tried to play in the office application kindergarden. They bought Wordperfect and had a hard time with it.
The thing is that Corel and Borland had their best programmers "stollen" by Microsoft. More money offered. Now that they are together, they might have a better chance.
I am a Debian user for a year, and when I installed Corel Linux I was amazed by the installation process and the bundle coming with it. You guys did a good job on making Linux easier for the home user.
What is, in your opinion, the next step that has to be taken by Unix in general, and Linux in particular so that we have a real competitor to Microsoft on the workstation and at home?
Reading the article on linux weekly news, I see that the only problem these guys had was related to a corrupt file system. I never shut down gracefully my phone, and I know that I am not the only one.
My question is : how expensive would it be to use Flash Ram instead of a hard drive? Look at Cisco routers, they don't have HD...
But I don't know anybody who unplug his router to make room for the coffee machine though:)
Very informative but : - they don't get into the details enought. I would have loved to read more stuff about databases connectivity, gif creation and so on. - they repeat themselves. - they spent too much time on GPL != QPL.
But I insist, it is worth reading.
P.S. : at least there is one core hacker running win32, and admiting it. I think it's a good point:0
In matter of hosting a web site, I don't think you should focus on the server. The content is what people will really look at. I have no idea what kind of machines/. is running on (but I know who makes them), and I don't care about load balancing, redandoncy or if their routers use BGP as long as I can read/. .
Saying that, I think that whatever you use, get ready for scaling. I was surprised that nobody talked about NIS (Yellow Pages). It is a must to have on a network (Unix... of course). Think about having a file server, independant from your web servers.
There are a lot of techniques you can use to get ready for scaling, but in my opinion those two are the most important.
I use 4.5 for EVERYTHING! Mail through imap, web of course, newsgroup, address book... I can't live without it.
Well let me get this straight, 4.7 doesn't change much. Some bug might have been corrected, a "shop" button added, but that is all folks!
I have been testing Mozilla M9 for a few weeks now, and this is really neat. 1 hour to compile it (PII 300 - 96 Mb), but it is worth it. I wouldn't rely on it for my e-mail yet, but it sounds really promising.
For those of you who are having these anoying bus error, there is a doc somewhere explaining what you have to do to get rid of that. If I remember well, it has something to do with the libc (bummer).
Well, Netscape is as heavy as usual. Netscape is, I think, the only program I use on a daily basis that doesn't use any free in the source code:)
Ok, so if I need to access my home page that uses the *latest* stuff in html, I am going to go through 10 minutes of loading - VMWare - NT - IE5 - CRASH !
Get real guys, IE is cool, but I don't bother with this stuff.
There's no way you can have that happen when you have of board of director and thousands of investors involved. Family matters are very, very bad ...
Think about it : What are lawyers for ? What are laws for ?
... Except the place maybe. Slasdhot ... damn! What would I do for a day if I couldn't read /. ?
...
You have two laws contradicting each others. First, the copyright law. Second, the Free Speech law.
What's new in there ? Nothing
Just a though
This was the T-shirt I was wearing today. What a coincidence :-)

Their was a story couple of weeks ago about the future of usenet.
The future of usenet is here, on Slashdot!

You also have this one from ZDNet, a little less geek-ish but much more formal.

The cost would certainly be less than using flash RAM .. and integrating upsd to this box should be pretty easy.
The website is not in French but in Italian.

Beside launching rockets and killing people, what kind of end-user application would benefit from "hard real-time" support in the linux kernel?
Austin Martin, BMW, etc. Never, EVER french cars. Now we understand why. I think it's pretty odd.
Now I understand why girls are "hot" just before their periods :-)
