It's important to be fair and see that other people have good ideas and are doing good work. It's also useful as well. By being "friendly" we not only increase the chances of a good flow of information but also make ourselves look better to the outside world.
The other important thing to realise is the linux isn't the best operating system in the world for everything. I know a lot of people keep saying that here but a lot also seem to think the linux is. By getting to know more about the plus points of the other systems our there we only benefit outselves.
Personal Note: I've used FreeBSD - didn't like some stuff about it (give me/dev/eth0,/dev/eth1 anyday) but it was faster than linux on the box I was running it on. All in all - I'd use it again. --
But intel aren't being anti-competitive and they don't have the same size monopoly as they used to to.
To be anti-competitive would be to reduce the price to below that of the Athlon and run at a loss and just hope that AMD goes bust first.
Of course intel want people to buy it's own chip and not AMD's. Of course intel want to drive AMD out of this particular area in chip making - that's what's called competing.
Nowaday, "the better product" is not just the best tech, but the best tech, price, sales, marketing etc. --
At one time, the United Sates was the only nuclear power in the world. I don't believe this is true, though I have no URLs to back it up.
Sure it was - when we (US and UK) ended WWII against Japan - the Russians and other countries (including a lot in Europe) got very annoyed because we wouldn't share the secret of atmoic bombs with them and this is one of the causes of the cold war.
The fact that the Russians quickly stole loads of top secret American plans and built there own weapons made the entire thing rather pointless from a defense point of view, but the cold war was also about general technological suprimisy which was a Good Thing. --
Oh for god sake - of course intel want to create a chip that will mean that people buy it rather than anything anybody else has to offer. Currently the target chip to beat is athlon.
This has nothing to do with the DoJ - this is what a free market is all about.
People is slashdot are far to good about crying foul when there is nothing wrong happening! --
But - we he really isn't a clueless script kid trying to become famous or something (hey - it gets more press coverage that defacing web sites) then he would have known the difference between a hacker and a cracker and would have used the terms correctly in his article. --
Oh I'm sure that some at Transmeta are sitting there reading/. and having a bit of a laugh. I mean, they only have to cough and message boards / irc gets filled up with talk about them. Question - if you were given the choice - would you sign a NDA and get told what they're doing but then not be able to tell others or would you prefer not knowing and carry on thinking about it? The dreaming's a lot more fun IMHO. --
What do WE do?
You pay $2000 for the any number of users license.
I think this might more some small companies away from using NT 2000 but really, $2000 isn't that much for most companies.

Of course, if the researcher had done his homework he would know that recent versions of GHOST do give you the option of changing the SID.
