X10.com IS X10! Sure X10 is a protocol too, but the parent company of the website is the company that came up with it. I personally wonder whatever happened to CEBus???
I can vouch for Brenthaven also. I carry it everyday to work. I love the special place for your MP3 Player or iPod. I don't own a iPod yet but do have a Creative Zen which after 10 months of Powerbook ownership finally works with my Powerbook although not in iTunes just yet. Anyway, the iPod and mose Hard Drive base MP3 PLayers will fit there and you can rout the headphone cable out of the pack. Love it love it love it. The side pockets coudl be a little wider so I could carry a Diet Pepsi or water bottle there, but they wor fine for stuff odd shaped devices in them like my 2m Handheld Transciever. As much as I carry it, it's still in almost pristine shape. Mainly just a dust spot here and there but no tears or scratches.
WiFi only devices are possible. I think your right in the case of this new Zaurus. With the extra power going to the Harddisk, the battery life would be abysmal.
Take a chil pill and start fine tuning your senses. I personally can block out when someone insists on yammering loudly in public. I really think it's annoying that some people seemed to have a problem blocking out things when they don't care to hear it. Sure, thast polyphonic ringtone can be a bit annoying, but it's off in a few seconds. After that, it's usually a hushed conversation. And yes, some calls ARE that important. If I and my wife are out for dinner and a movie sans child, we're using our phones for emergency contact numbers. Granted, we aren'd dolts who have the ringers ON in the theature, but we do want to have it on.
I have Time Warner digital phone and it is wonderful. Costs a little more then Vonage, but then if I get pissed enough, I can still go and confrotn them at the office!;) Plus they wired it into all of my phone jacks with no problems.
It can if your prepared. Cell phones could be redeployed within hours after a event because one thing....mobile cell towers. Within hourse, Verizon Wireless and the like can have trucks heading into these areas before a disater strikes if need be. Regular PSTN lines take alot more time to piece together after they have been shredded. Temporary Cells On Wheels can be deployed while permanent replacements are erected. Odds are, you still probably had cell service way before you had landline phones and possibly a roof over your head on a nightly basis that was your own!
Yes it can. Just try Wiretap for the Mac. Records ANYTHING that goes out including copyprotectd AAC's. I would not use it to do that (it's easier to do it other ways)but when you'd like to record a program that is only streamed, it works like a charm.
First off, they need to reword in that it allows legal P2P. Whats wrong with my sharing a MP3 Recording of my Churches Worship Team playing? Nothing.
Second, just because everyone does something, does not make it right. Being able to make MP3's off oc CD's you own should be legal. Giving your friend a copy for free should also be legal. Giving it to your 5 million closest friends online is one step too far!;)
Ok why did the system need rebooted? Because of the SOFTWARE! My Mac almost never needs a reboot to fix things and neither does my servers (exceept when patching teh base operationg system). Why companies use Windows for critical functions is beyond me!
Ok....I love how the democrats are all trying to find a way to point out something bad about Bush and keep getting it turned back around. My favorite is the CBS debacle regarding Bush's guard service. Personally, I don't think they lied so much as they made a decision. Sure, the decision may have been based, in part, of these tubes. That does not mean they lied. They made a decision that they hoped would be backed by things they may have found and now they have not found much.....but they have found somethings.....mostly remnents. The thing is a democrat could have done the same thing. I guess Clinton did not try to wag the dog with the ineffective bombing runs in Iraq during his administration. The same thing would have happened. Of that I am convinced. Saddam has repetedly denied access to places we asked to get access to. He repeatedly made it hard for the inspectors to do their jobs. Last I checked, he lost Gulf War I pretty bad and when you sign a treaty to end hostilities or make some agreements, then you need to bend over backwards to follow them. If you don't, then your asking for trouble. Just like if a cop caught you speeding and wanted to check for alcohol use. The cop caught you and hes going to check for as many things as he can. You were in the wrong and you are the suspect. If you did not screw up then you'd have a point. Same goes for Saddam. Saddam did not play by UN rules even and the UN refused to press the issue.
Ok, let me get you on this one.....Bush spends 42% of his time on the ranch or golf course? How about this...the President probably puts alot more hours then you and even when he's on the golf course he's working. Sometimes he is woken up in the middle of the night. Sometimes he's told while reading to some kids that 2 airliners crashed into the world trade center. Sometimes when he'd like to take a run on the white house lawn he has to have 4-5 secret service guards with him. He probably can't even take a piss with out a Secret Service agent standing either in the room with him or right outside. So who the hell cares if he decides to go take the afternoon and go shoot 18 holes? You don't think Kerry would do the same??
Bush had nothing to do with Al Qaida coming to power. Osama and his lot was pretty much created by countries who only taught their kids the Quran and some very basic skills and nothing else. In Saudi Arabia, the Sudan and other muslim countries, there's alot of young muslims with no hope thanks to their government's way of bringing them up. Sure, they may go work in the oil fields for pennies a day and the sheiks and governments get all of the profits. Many of these countries do way more to protect the elite then people accuse the US of doing.
Read the 9/11 Commission report and it will open your eyes. 9/11, the bombing of our Marine Barracks in Beruit and the Cole all happened under democratic and republican administrations and you can't blame any of that on Bush he's only been in office for about 4 years.
Bush has done more to NOT make us a target then to make us a target. The actions he has undertaken have done more to prevent another 9/11 then to create another one. I ain't saying the war on terror is over. Far from it. But thanks to Bush, he has Al Qaida on the run and we have captured Saddam Huessien who, besides the no WMD's found...yet...deserved to be taken out.
Al Qaida was a cause before Bush even took office. Osama issued his fatwa when President Clinton was trying to get out of his problem with Monica and it probably did not even get a word on CNN. Osama and other extremist Muslims already had a following before 9/11 and before Bush took office. Osama and his followers hate us because they just hate us. We are the infidels in this world and he wants all of the world to be muslim. Part of his hatred has to do with our presence in Saudi Arabia (even though we were defending HIM!) during Gulf War I. The other part is just because 90 percent of us are Christian or something other then muslim. Blaming Bush for any of this is just like blaming him for the internet bubble. I can point to what he has done after 9/11. He has freed Afghanistan from Taliban rule. He has caused the capture of many terrorists close to Osama. He has captured another dictator, Saddam Hussein. Sure, he has not got Osama....yet....but how are we to know? To me, if we had killed Osama, why would we let anyone know? Osama may already be dead but we would not announce it right away because doing so would be worse then him living. Osama wants to be a martyr for his religion and by us letting the whole world know, it would achieve what he wants.
In any case, Bush did not really want to do some of the things he did....he did them because we asked for something to be done. The Patriot Act, while not really accomplishing much, it has pacified some people.....even if they don't fully consider it's implications.
It is you who is under that rock....read the 9/11 report. It's very enlightening.
Oh and I supposed if Al Gore or any other Democrat was in office and our Military decided to announce this under ther administration it would be ok? This is the BIGGEST and most HIPPOCRITCAL things I have seen from a supporter of the democrats. Listen up....if we sit back and relax and say hey we're the US we got things under control....we don't need no stinkin satellite killers and the next thing you know, China sends up a Nuke and detonates it in orbit with a EMP large enough to send us back to the stoneage. Weapons must exist to defend us. Do you think our military men WANT to kill others? No. But if they don't, then those terrorists or other ENEMIES of our way of life will kill US. So they HAVE to do this to protect you and your pansy ass so you can have the right to bitch about George W Bush.
Now wait...let's just say this....most of the country wants the government to do all of these things for them, yet they do not want to pay more taxes. You can't have it both ways. The government will try to make you happy, but they have to make sure the money is there. They have to gauge what is better for the country. Would you like to have a 50 percent tax on your income if you did not have to pay for health care? Would it hurt the economy if they did that? (answer=yes!). Sometimes the American public=stupid. Somtimes the American People don't know what is better for the country because they don't have access to all of the data. We're not in office so how can we make the assumption we'd do something different once we're presented with all of the data?
Also, we are not a Democracy. We are a Republic. We built our government with checks and balances. When Congress does something stupid, the President can Veto. If both congress and the president does something stupid, the Supreme Court can rule that it's unconstitutional. If the President does something stupid, Congress can vote it down. It's all about checks and blances. If this country was a democracy, there would be alot of stupid things done because the American public as a whole is non-caring about most things but their sorry place in life and the won't know what to vote for either (not much different then who to vote for at the polls I guess).
The Government, as a whole, should try to do what their constituents want, but when they(the voters) are dumb or are asking for something impossible, the only thing left is what is best for the country.
Allegedly, I did not ake a shower this morning....that does not mean it is true. Let both sides talk about it before you make statements. Miss Diane Feinstein is a DEMOCRAT. She's against the war and against Bush. This alledged item could be nothing more then Bushes aide's translating Arabic to English. Nothing more then advising him what to say for the good of Iraq. I also DO believe Kerry would pul us out. Let me remind you Bill Clinton was President when alot of the Air Stations on NORAD control were reduced. During the Cold War, we had a high of 26 Air Bases with 2 fighters on 24 hour alert. That high number is now down to 7. MAJOR reductions in the miltary have happened under the Democrats. Granted, at times during the reduction, both sides had the ability to stop the bleeding but neither did anything because they thought they were doing what the people wanted. Sometimes, the people don't know what they want and you have to do the RIGHT thing for the country instead. I am not saying more air stations and the like would have prevented 9/11, but they certainly would have given the ability to vector more aircraft and possibly even quicker. If you have not read the 9/11 Commision report, I highly reccomend reading it. Just don't go into with a biased view. Read it as if you were standing in their shoes and you will realize that 9/11 and the new war on terror is something that regardless of who's in office, it WOULD have happened anyway. Under Clinton, Bush Number one or Bush number 2 and even Al Gore.
RV's are nice. You COULD call this camping, but I agree...it's tenting and reduced technology for me. However, I do always bring my PDA, cell phone, digital camera and camcorder, I do, however leave my TV at home usually unless you count the crappy B&W TV built into my flashlight. Would I by a dish just for camping? Oh HELL no. I tend to use camping as a way of reducing my hotel cost. I can camp for 20 a night and the best I could do on average for a room is 50 a night and thats if it's 20 miles away. So I am not totally aginst getting a RV, but I would not have the bus conversion type of RV with the full bedroom and lots of expensive things like a plasma tv I have seen in some RV's. The regular diesl pushers are expensive enough.
They already use it. Here's one of them. The TDS Recon has been around a while and while the one I link to isn't the militarized version, this one is only different in color(army has green ones) and any possible top secret add ons.
While I agree that you should still have a map and compass, how do you in the wilderness just start breaking things? There's a thing called an otterbox that can prevent just that but with normal Pocket PC's and Palms. The military also uses ruggedized PocketPCs (also for sale to non-military, but with out the Top Secret addons and software) in the field. Most of the ruggedized PocketPC's can take being dropped off of a cliff and also being submerged, stood on, ground into the mud....etc.
You CAN make a GPS or other device that will withstand the rigors of the outdoors. The only thing stopping you is the battery.
But your right....the Map and Compass should still be along for the hike.
I bet if Apple does movies some day that everyone will say wow Apple made this huge break throught!;) Well, I don't think they will make a huge break through or anything but I bet they will claim to be the first when they are not. Movielink could make a good play on the market if they do a few things(written more or less as a comment I will also copy and paste in a e-mail to Movielink):
Increase viewing time to more then 24 hours. That way you can load up the movies before a trip and not have to depend on having high speed to get something to watch in your room.
Support browsers and OS's other then Windows. The browser thing especially. More and more people are using Mozilla. Get used to it Movielink. It's only going to get worse before it gets better for you. Support Mac OSX as well. Just come up with some non-unobtrusive DRM on top of MPEG4 and you should be able to support the majority of OS's out there. Take a hint from Apple and follow what they did. Alot of geeks don't bitch too much about iTMS and even a few have figured out how to make it work on Linux.
We really do want to download movies legally and not have to use eMule(at least I do...I am not a cheapskate). It's less hassle, we don't have to question the quality (much). The way you, Movielink, has decided to do business does not get us excited. Also, saying from the get go you won't ever support anything other then Windows, IE and for those in other countrys only the US is limiting your market. Even with the DRM, more people would try it if you got rid of the 24 hour period and supported other browsers. Also, by supporting other OS's it make it easier for anyone to view them on devices other then a laptop. Creative or Archos could include the DRM you need to play them in their devices (again, do it like Apple has doen the iPod).
Until those things happen, you won't grow much beyond where your at now. People who do buy these portable media devices want to use them to view it. That way you don't have to have a computer and you can hook the Video out to the hotel TV and watch them.
For now, I will stick to either DVD's or DVD rips stored on a external hard disk. They play on my mac as well as my pc and I can watch them on a big screen with little pain.
OpenLDAP is THE way to go, but your apps have to support it. LDAP will also only provide authentication. It will nto controll your APPS security. Each app has it's own security that will end up being the bulk of your load. The biggest problem will be getting your proprietary, yet necessary apps authenticating to LDAP if it's even possible. We had one app where I work where it could not walk a LDAP tree and we have multiple directories that are geographically based. The app in question could only read one directory. We went through all kinds of rigamarole to get it to work but it finally worked pretty reliably...then the vendor released a new patch that negated our work (could walk multiple trees). Oh well....it will still work when we migrate to the new stuff. Also, one issue we run into is if we do this with our main app,our UNIX server can handle the authentication to LDAP (in our case, Novell eDirectory), but the application is not certified to run "that" way. So we stick to two signons, one for everything else and oen for the production system. That said, here's why I don't like single signon:
Once you get the one password, then all of the accounts for thtah signon are compromised. If you have a hole in ANY of the apps, that makes all of them vulnerable to attack. As much of a PITA it is for users, I don't care. I am not in a rush to migrate to using LDAP for our main application as I would rather the passswords be independent. Although most users make the passwords the same, I do have some that know why they should not have that practice.
Showing the video with the sound down is a breach of copyright or could be seen as such. Now if they had redone the scenes comedically, then they may have something to fight for, but in this case, Lucas would win easily. A film is more then just it's audio. Plus if the DVD release interviews are any sign, Lucas will be on the warpath as far a spiracy goes. Don't be surprised to see some geek on eMule getting a C&D or worse for distributing divx rips.
Hmm...this is kind of goofy. I think it would be better to just limit the resolution in those areas that way you could not see details on the buildings, but you could still see the stuff around the building. It just does not make sense when I can walk up realtively close to it and even see it from my plane as I fly into Reagan. That and I am sure you can find all kinds of photos on the whitehouses own website.

Were those cyclists who were at the back of the pack? That kind of advertisng bothers me. It's dangerour to wear headphones when riding.
Like suitcase nukes???
