I was going to reply to that reply to my post, but you answered it much better then I would. No where in my post did I say that if something is technically possible, that it should be done. It's technically possible to do alot of things, but noone said that it was right. One example I have is using gene therapy to change your face or your genetic makeup to make you more appealing to females. That's just wrong. Curing a disease is one thing, changing your DNA to have a better looking nose or to give someone a disease is another. God gives us great power. He expects us to use it for good, not evil. Weapons can be a good example of this. If someone uses a weapon to kill an innocent, then, that's bad. If someone uses a weapon to defend themself, or to get rid of evil (like Bin Laden), then that's also good, but god still cries for both. God loves you if your a beliver or a non-beliver. He even cries when a evil person dies. I know it's hard to belive, but that's the truth.
This is me currently. I have some parts form my original, but have added a CD-RW, swapped MB's (cuz the original died), changed out a power supply, upgraded soundcards (to get rid of the revolting Aureal card I had and replace it with a Live), upgraded graphics cards (not to a GeForce 3 or a Geforce 4, but to a 2 MX400.....replacing a Permedia 2....it's all I need..I don't play twitch games), upgraded hard drives (40 GB replacing a 12 GB....12 GB was full...one day I wil add it back), changed cases and that's about it. Eventually, I will upgrade CD-RW and the DVD drives (maybe with a combo drive), upgrade the MB to a DDR board (not very likely yet), upgrade memory to 256 or 512 mb ram (very likely), upgrade monitors when my current one dies (to a 15 inch or larger LCD depending on funds). Replacing or upgrading parts is almost always the way to go, unless you need to add a PC. Then, if I were to choose, I would choose a place that built their own machines (Micro Center Power spec machines). When you choose a place that does BTO, not only do you get the parts you want (or at least the specs you want), you get a case that's upgradeable, and not proprietary. A case that can take new upgrades as the come.
The only time I would buy a whole new machine is if I was adding a machine or getting a laptop. If I am just wanting to upgrade one piece, I can do that myself, and save the bucks. The same way that if something goes out in our car or if you want a new upgraded set of tires it's much cheaper to replace the part then buy a whole new car to replace it. Of course that's until the cars "case" rots (rusts). After that, you buy a new car.
I have downloaded weatherbug as it's the only free (as in beer) alternative to other programs for displaying weather info in the task bar. I't was great. They even started to rebrand the program for those of us who decided not to pay for the pro version. I get everything the proversion has except skinnning. The pro version let's you set your own skin. I don't need that. Not in a weather program. Right now the ad is for CI Hosting. Sometimes its for Nextel. I accept it because don't feel like giving them money. I wil accept the ads the same way as I accept the ads on slashdot. The bad thing they started doing though is when you press the x button to close the program back to the tray, it will open a pop-up ad. That I could live without, but at least it's only one ad. Now if my browser changed totally when I browsed a certain page? No way...uh-no. Leave my browser alone!
God gives us everything. At least that's what I belive. If god does not want us to know something, he won't let us. That's my opinion. So long as any gene research does not result in a death or crippling some one or for the sake of better boobs, I think it's ok in my opinion. I personally would have loved some of this stuff to be found out years ago because now I may have a grandma to talk to and her talk back instead of visiting someone who can just listen to me. I am not sure what she had, but what I do know is it messed her brain up and she's almost not like grandma. All of her mental functions are ok, it's just that she doesn't have much control of her muscles. It started as a flayling of hands....for a time they thought it might have been Parkinsons, but it wasn't. Now you have to be careful how close you get to her sometimes cuz she could accidently slap ya. Not funny and she doesn't mean to do it, but if they had figured out how to fix this in time, she'd be mostly normal (even if she's old). I want to WALK with my grandma and have fun with her like I did when I was a kid/teenager. My son will only know his great grandma as some old lady in a bed. If any religious zealot wants to keep this from people who truely need it, then to heck with em! How many years more of Michael J Fox's acting would we have if they could reverse his parkinsons? I think it's right as long as we are fixing something. Doing genetic alterations in the womb is something that should not be done and also gene alterations just for better looking kids is a bad thing too. Genetic alteration to fix something that could hurt someone all of their life, well, I feel a bit different about that cuz if this stuff would have happened sooner, I would probably still have a vibrant grandma instead of a invalid grandma.
You know, I see alot of use "IT" folks treat equipment like crap and expect it to work. I ain't saying that COD is cuz of this or that Iomega has the best service in the world. I also do know that alot of stuff in computers is like this. Until something is studied to death (especially something like COD...it just did not make sense to them I am sure), the company will not admit it's wrong. I am sure we'd be the same way. I also do know that I would have handled it differently if I was Iomega....I would have said something like we know there's a problem, but we don't know what it is....if you want a refund....and post a procedure. I know they did not handle it this way, but for only buying ONE product and having a problem with it doesn't mean all of them will. That would be just as irresponsible as Iomega's behavior. I personally have never had a problem with a Zip Drive. I have used many different ones and they have all worked. Heck I screwed up the door on one of my zip disks and fixed it by bending it back in place and it still worked. Also, if I was picking a NAS solution for anything other then maybe a small office, I would not pick a Iomega one....ever. Even if I had one I would not (and I am sure I would like it and it would serve MY needs well). If i had to pick one for work right now, it would be a EMC( or one of the other soltions from one of the other companies that are more robust. This Iomega NAS unit isn't made for a data center....it's made to be used in a office or home environment. Anyone who would use such product in an environment that it would be a critical piece of equipment is insane. That said, I am sure it will work fine for people such as us using it at home on our home networks. I know Iomega HAD problems and I have never seen any of the other problems mentioned on here. COD was along time ago and it's time to bury the hatchet. Besides they are offering something other then windows alongside windows. How cool is that?
COD happened YEARS ago. Like OVER 5! I have had two Zip drives myself and can't say anything bad about them. One was the SLOW parallel port one that got knocked around cuz I took it back and forth to work. For the last two round of PC upgrades at work, all machines have had Zip drives installed. Zips in a user base af about 1500-3000 computers. I talk to the PC guys alot (I am mainframe/UNIX dude). I have heard NOTHING about Zip drive failures. Creative Labs Infra CD-ROM drives sucked and I heard about it too (especially since my boss had one...thing would suck the tray back in immedeately after ejecting it). Over 1500 drives in service with not much failing...it either means they just work, or they ain't using em. The Iomega COD think comes back every time Iomega releases a new thing. Yeah they made mistakes, but I think they have done well. Yeah, the clik disk/HipZip did suck, but only cuz it took them too long to develop it and by the time the 40 MB disks came out, CF cards were well above the 40 MB mark and cheaper then they once were. I just got a 128 MB CF card for my camera and it was only about 90 bucks (could have had it for 80, but I was lazy). Clik was just too little to late and Iomega ain't the only company to do this. This bash Iomega because of a problem 5 years ago is getting a little freaking old.
Can't be sure, but I thought that this board (I might have the older A7V) needed a bios upgrade to SUPPORT the Athlon XP? At least that is what I read on the ASUS website. That said, unless the fixed it recently, I still have GNOME (2.0 Developer snapshots as well as 1.4) lock up on my system. KDE 2.XX works just fine and I have used one up in KDE for hours. I love my ASUS board. Kick butt board and when I get the bucks to step up to a true Athlon XP board(one that supports all of the faster speeds and with USB 2.0) I will look at ASUS!
Music and amatuer radio doesn't mix (not sure if the data would be though like if it would be a MP3....). The only station allowed to broadcast music on the amatuer bands is the space shuttle.
Yes Part 97 states that you must not use any "code" on the air. All things must be readable or understandable. My guess is that it would also include encryption.
Sigh....everyone is assuming that I mean an opressive set of rules....no, that's not what I mean. Some parents are wishy washy and have crap for rules and let their kids get away with all kinds of things. "Oh he's not hurting anything by dragging all of the pots and pans on the floor making the kitchen a royal mess....let's not punish him...."(me rolling eyes). Now I don't mean you put a chastity belt on your 16 year old girl and then tie them to a chair. I mean rules that are strict, but with some wiggle room. Sure you can go out....but not on a school night and you have to be back by 12.
My house my rules does not suggest that the rules are restrictive. Sure you must build trust, but you don't have to be thier friend all of the time. Sometimes you have to lay down the long arm of your houses law. Kids need to know that you trust them, but you also have to make sure that they know that it is you that is the boss, not them. My parents always gave me enough string to hang myself and when I hung myself, I got punished. Did I like it? No, but I am not supposed to because it's PUNISHMENT and I screwed up! This is why me son will not have any TV or VCR in his room. The toys will be there because I have no other place for them, but he will not have a TV or Phone in his room. If there's something that he talking about on the phone that he doesn't want his parents hearing, it's usually something the parents need to hear.
Also, teens with cell phones? Who's paying the bill? THEY ARE AT MY HOUSE AND NOT ME. Would I bail the kid out if he spent too much on his cell phone bill? Sure, but then their cell phone would become my cell phone and they'd never be allowed to have one again (unitl they show that they can be responsible). See! Responsibility because I want to show the kid I trust them with it...but when it's abused, it must be taken away. My house my rules doesn't mean and opressive set of rules unless the trust goes away. Kids can kill the trust by not following the rules. That's the consequences of not followng rules. If kids do things then don't get punished for doing the wrong things, then they never learn that there are consquences for their actions.
Sigh...again....my house, my rules. If they want privacy...they can pay rent (and still follow some basic rules) or they can move out on thier own and pay rent. Sure it would break my heart if my son wanted to do this before he was considered a normal age for that (18-19), but if he wanted it that way, I will let HIM try and figure out how to pay it....then they would realize how good they have it at home even with the "restrictive" rules and they would come back once they KNOW it really is hard to do all of the stuff adults do. I'm sorry. Kids just do not have the right to privacy until they become adults. I am also not saying GPS watches would have prevented Columbine....the one thing that would have is unshelfish parents taking care of, and checking out their kids room. The room IS in their house you know.
Your nuts! How can this have ANY bearing on this?? The US can't control the people both by law, and by the sheer impossibility of it. Oh congress trys but we ALL know how well the DMCA works at stopping piracy!;)
Your house is different. There is usually only 4-5 people in a house. Easily doable...if they don't like it leave....wait....that works for the US too. If you don't like it here get out. Thanks!:) Also, it's not like the US would stop ya from leaving either!
How is my house, my rules overproctective?? They can have considerable leeway. But the biggest things alot of parents nowadays for get is that THEY are the boss. The kids do dictate come things, but when they cross that line they need to know taht they have crossed it. Don't be your kids "buddy" all of the time. Be their parent!
I agree with that....that's what babysitters are for. Vacations are not for that. That's just my opinion. I had every vacation of my life with my mom and dad and they got a vacation when grandpa and grandma wanted to take us somewhere. When I take vacation time from work, it's for my family. Plain and simple. I never take vacation time purely for my own reasons. Sure, sometimes I need a break from work, but usualy I have family events and things that come up often enough I hardly ever take time off just to be away from work. If kids drive you that nuts, you need to get some therapy or never to have kids. One thing one who is a parent must always remember when taking care of kids is that they are kids. They are not going to listen to you until you repeat it three times and even then they will do what they want. You have to spend time with them to get the respect. I mean more time then a few hours a day bud. To me, I can keep my marriage happy by taking care of the kid when mom needs a break. Does that mean we never go out without the kid? No. But to me, taking a vacation with out the kids is selfish. There are always those night you have to go out to some swanky restaurant, but vacations only come up once or twice a year and it's important to be a family at those times. Those nights when I do go out with my wife are treasured because they don't come up often.
So far as would I buy this watch for my son...if I had the money, sure I'd probably get it to use as a tool to keep us sane when we are out as a family, not that without it you can't be sane;).
Going to any place nice without kids is a crock. RETIREMENT and after the kids grow up leaves PLENTY of time for that. When you retire you won't know what to do because you've already done it.
For the social service comment....I'd watch suggesting it. Some nutcase probably would call.
Well, to me, my family is more important then that kid free vaca to Hawaii. I am not saying YOU MUST SPEND ALL OF YOUR FREE TIME WITH YOUR KIDS....no no, don't be foolish. Vacations, to me, have always been with family. and NO WE DON'T NEED a law.....but seriously, if you really need a vacation without kids, consider that you will have time for that after they grow up. That's what retirement is for. Besides, if I am going to Hawaii, 1 week is NOT enough time!;)
I agree with this thinking. Making laws "for the children" is not needed. What I think SHOULD be done, is a parental responsibility law. Make the PARENT responsible for the actions of their kid. Now some might think that this would entail all sorts of tech, but it doesn't have to. All it takes is you to SPEND TIME WITH YOUR KIDS! That's it! NO vacations to Hawaii without the kids, NO vacations to anywhere without the kids and for god's sake do something, ANYTHING special with your kids at least once a week. They will thank you for it in the end.
That's BULL! I don't care if your 15, 16, 17 or 18....if you are living with the parent then your subject to their rules. How is this an abuse??? I do agree some parents can be overprotective, but that's definitely not in all cases. Of course I was taught to respect my parent and not be a hellion and start doing bad things. It's this kind of thinking that led to the Columbine thing. If you want that to happen again, then fine, give your kids their "privacy". As a home owner or head of the house or parent, it's YOUR responsibility to know what they hell is happening under your roof, as well as watching/knowing who our kids associate with, and where they go. It's only after they leave the house that they should have ANY privacy. Period. End of discussion.
Actually WTVN is Talk Radio and they have alot of local talent. SO far they are not replacing a bunch of shows with syndicated crap. John Corby, the afternoon dirve time host is the greatest. Gives me something to laugh at when I am on the way home. The guy after him, Sterling from 7 to 10 is pretty good also then there's the king of late night, Steve "Boom Boom" Cannon. Yeah I know, even I get tired of talk radio sometimes, but talk radio is the closest thing to Geeks in Space on normal radio. Plus John has the Big Bass Brothers restaurant reviews every Friday at 6. I find lots of places to eat from that that are not a chain store, that have good food and lots of it for not very much money. One restaurant called the Ohio Deli has a Dagwood sandwich that is HUGE and only costs a bit over 5 bucks. So, no, not ALL Clear Channel stations sound the same. Since Clear Channel has bought both WTVN and WNCI in the Columbus area, they have pretty much left things alone (except the weekends are getting more automated). Granted, NCI is top 40, so you hear alot of N'sync and Britney on it, but there's occasionally a good song being played and I only listen during the Morning Zoo anyway. They don't play music!:) Well, at least what I would call music....one parody song that have is called Osama Farted. Hilarious!
I know Clear Channel stopped doing streams for a while, but they now stream everyday...they just don't play ads unless they are nationwide ads. Both WNCI and WTVN in Columbus area stream now.
The only problems I have ever seen have been on the IBM drives. I have a Western Digital and it's been great. Of course it is next to my zip and since i have purchased a CD-RW drive, my zip gets little use. If you have more then one Hard Disk and you have two 7200's mounted in the same place in the case, well that's asking for trouble. At work we have a 15,000 RPM SCSI drive in the worst environment of all....a 1 x server and it hasn't failed yet and it's been on 24/7 for a while now. Some may say that 1 x servers are great, but to me they are portable heaters...the air coming out the back is hotter then the air coming out of the mainframe (and it used to be the hottest thing in the room).
The bit-tech case is nice, but if you look at this page o fit, you see that the rear cutouts are SUCKY looking. See if you can find a shield plate from another case and cut a NICE SQUARE cutout instead of this jacked up one.
Yeah I know that too. You'd never catch me buying the Cadillac SUV. I'd rather have an Avalanche or the dressed down Trailblazer. You'd never see me in a Escalade. SUV's are for those idiotic enough to think that buying a mini van makes them loose their cool (when they have already lost it anyway....).
The Lindzen article is a good one. Lots of stuff there. Took a while to read. My favorite part was:
The panel did include distinguished scientists and economists outside the area of climate, and, perhaps because of this, the report issued by the panel was by and large fair. The report concluded that the scientific basis for costly action was absent, although prudence might indicate that actions that were cheap or worth doing anyway should be considered.
Which is my point all along. Everyone wants us to drive a SUV that gets 37 miles per gallon. The problem is is that this car can't exist without a significant cost to the consumer. R & D has to be paid for some how and a law doesn't pay for it. It makes it more expensive. Thanks for the links!

Oh congress trys but we ALL know how well the DMCA works at stopping piracy! ;)
:) Also, it's not like the US would stop ya from leaving either!
Your house is different. There is usually only 4-5 people in a house. Easily doable...if they don't like it leave....wait....that works for the US too. If you don't like it here get out. Thanks!
Those nights when I do go out with my wife are treasured because they don't come up often.
;).
So far as would I buy this watch for my son...if I had the money, sure I'd probably get it to use as a tool to keep us sane when we are out as a family, not that without it you can't be sane
Besides, if I am going to Hawaii, 1 week is NOT enough time! ;)
They don't play music! :) Well, at least what I would call music....one parody song that have is called Osama Farted.
I agree with the ther poster. That's crap. I have a Via Chipset and I am running a Pinnacle TV card and it works great! I also got it for 30 bucks! :)
Which is my point all along. Everyone wants us to drive a SUV that gets 37 miles per gallon. The problem is is that this car can't exist without a significant cost to the consumer. R & D has to be paid for some how and a law doesn't pay for it. It makes it more expensive. Thanks for the links!
