you sound like the blackbox/fluxbox and maybe e16 type, having access to the terminal alot and using a window manager that requires little memory at all.
I still like xfce for over this. It looks alot like windows 9x for some reason. http://www.xfce.org/ I dunno. I'm the enlightenment/fluxbox type, but if I want a DE so i can use compiz as the window manager, I always got lost in deciding Gnome or KDE, but as soon as I found xfce I decided its the best. The number of tray plugins are sortof limited, but all it needs is more developers willing to help out with that end.

Until biotechnology reaches a point where humans can create our own living thing for the sole purpose of testing (which i assume you would disagree with also) there are really no other solution. i guess you have to decide between a hundred deaths of mice with a chance of saving a million human lives, or a million human deaths without a solution due to lack of testing. There are variables that can differ due to the situation, but it basically comes down to that concept.
I won't get into the hypocrisy of animal rights activists, who seem to feel that a cat's life is equivalent to a human's, yet a dung beetle's life is out of the question (since he/she is no fan of insects), for that would be another 5 paragraphs;).
You probably know a bit more on OpenGL development than I do. How many people are involved with its development? What companies? OpenGL is one open source project I wish was ahead of times like some computer development categories, but unfortunately it isn't.

However, Sims 2 has a Mac OS X version, and with a little help You can run it on your PC. I was first a linux user, and when I studied up on the bsd backend of OS X, I became interested. OS X comes with X11, so you can compile most unix(ala linux included) apps on OS X. Anyway, hope this sortof helps

Like moving it from java running on a java vm to something like c++ or better running off of a real cpu? the fact that the big client runs off of java is what got me to stop using it. especially when clients like transmission and deluge came out.
